EU Leonardo GameiT project partner meeting

Between the 15th and the 17th of May we were fortunate to host the third partner meeting of the GameiT EU project here at Bournemouth University’s Executive Business Centre (the first two took place in Denmark and Norway respectively). The project, which kicked off in October 2009 and finishes this coming October, has received 250,000 Euros of funding in total, across 7 different participating institutions from countries such as Denmark, Norway, Germany, Italy and (of course) the UK. This is under the EU Leonardo Transfer of Innovation scheme which has an aim of facilitating an exchange of innovative practices in education across different European countries.

With a mission statement aimed at identifying, collecting, testing and distributing good practice in game-based learning, our project, now reaching its final stage, aims to produce a framework of game-based learning pedagogy targeted at teachers and trainers.  This resulting framework will empower them to design learning environments and teaching methods which are more creative, innovative, motivating and ultimately engaging by including video gaming elements.

Topics covered during the partner meeting included progress on the main and final deliverable of the GameiT project; a handbook of practice detailing pilot course design efforts/ideas towards game-based learning which vary from, for example, using a simulation game for medication dosage calculation in nursing classes to tackling history curriculum content with an off-the-self commercial strategy game. This handbook will be launched officially in the final meeting/event of the project which is to take place in Copenhagen, Denmark in mid October.
