Title:  Music and Movement for people living with dementia

The Alzheimer’s Society commissioned BUDI to evaluate a pilot study using music and movement sessions with people with dementia.  Patricia McParland and Clare Cutler carried out the evaluation. The project aimed to stimulate and engage people with dementia through the medium of dance.  The sessions were planned to incorporate social interaction, peer support, engagement and active participation. Specifically, the service was designed to help people with dementia to feel part of society where they have a right to artistic and social stimulation.   Ten sessions took place in two memory cafes in Somerset and Bournemouth.  The project began in Jan 2013 and the final report on the evaluation is due on 30th April.”

 
Title:  Interior design guidelines for care homes for people with dementia

This report aims to provide an overview of the key aspects and principles of dementia-friendly interior design features to consider when contracting the design aspects of a building. It also offers detailed advice, including links to resources and illustrated examples, on dementia-friendly interior design aspects of bedrooms, bathrooms, living areas, dining areas and corridors for residential care environments.

 

Title: Bournemouth Council Dementia Project: Technology Club

This project is funded by Bournemouth Council for Bournemouth University to facilitate a Technology Club over the summer of 2012. These sessions are designed to support and encourage people with dementia to keep healthy and active, to maintain active memory functions and to remain independent with the help of technology. This will be achieved by providing activity sessions using Apple Ipads, Nintendo Wii’s and Nintendo DS’s.

 

Title:  Bournemouth Council Dementia Project: Cupcake Club

This project is funded by Bournemouth Council for Bournemouth University to facilitate a Cupcake Club over the summer of 2012. These sessions are designed to support and encourage people with dementia to keep healthy and active, to maintain active memory functions, to remain independent and to function in the community for as long as possible. This will be achieved by providing activity sessions such as arts and crafts, simple exercise and memory sessions, along with a cupcake and a coffee.

 

Title:  Memory Advisory Service Evaluation

Dates: October 2012-Feburary 2013

This project evaluated two models of providing a memory advisory service to local people who have some difficulty with or are concerned about their memory. The evaluation included analysis of service specifications, reports, and costs of running two services, along with interviews with staff and users of the service. The evaluation identified which aspects were working particularly well and identified areas for improvement, in provision of the service for both people with dementia and their carers.

 
Title:  Gateway to Rural International Initiatives in Dementia (GRIID) Developing International Rural Dementia Care Excellence

This projects main aim is to advance the provision of dementia care support and services in rural areas internationally. This will be achieved through the construction of an international website, which will be used to collate international experiences and examples of innovative rural dementia care, in order to create a central repository of information. This information will be accessible to practitioners, educators, service commissioners and providers, and academics for translation into their specific country or regional context. This project aims to put rural dementia care on the map!

Title:  Dementia Friendly Tourism (DFT)

The overall aim of this project is to ascertain how tourism can respond to the needs of people with dementia and their carers to increase their use of tourist attractions, accommodation and resorts in the South of England. This will be achieved by:

  • Exploring the views of people with dementia and their carers through focus groups about what is required to promote their use of tourist attractions, accommodation and resorts.
  • Examining the feasibility of stakeholders (i.e. tourist attractions, accommodation and resort managers) developing dementia friendly products and experiences, through interviews.

Title:  Somerset Dementia Collaborative: An Evaluation of a Humanising Care Approach

The project was initiated to improve hospital care for people with dementia and their carers. Two members of staff were recruited to facilitate the project which involved working with staff from the thirteen community hospitals and two general hospitals situated in the county of Somerset. Based on a philosophy of attending to the ‘human dimensions of care’ (Todres et al., 2009) the project involved three strands: 1.Lived Experience Workshops, designed to support staff to experience the difficulties that patients with dementia face on a hospital ward. 2. Ward-Based Projects that allowed staff to adopt a project aimed at enhancing the experience for the person with dementia and their carers and family members. 3. An on-line platform for staff to exchange ideas and good practice. The project was evaluated through the use of self-completion questionnaires and semi-structured interviews.

Summary: This project was the first world-wide participation of early-to-moderate onset people with Alzheimer’s disease who were treated with Aricept. Significant findings resulted in a publication in the Clinical Gerontologist.
