Register for the International History of Public Relations Conference
The conference, organised by the Institute for Media and Communication Research in BU’s Media School, is an international opportunity for academic researchers, historians and interested practitioners to meet, hear papers and discuss this emerging area of research.
The first conference’s Call for Papers has resulted in the submission of 66 abstracts from six continents with a wide range of themes and topics. At July 2010 conference, 34 papers were presented, along with two keynote speakers. See the video report of the conference. A selection of five papers has been published in a special issue of the Journal of Communication Management, Vol. 15, No.3, 2011.
The second conference in July 2011 was also well supported with more than 50 abstracts submitted, leading to 28 papers from 15 countries being presented along with the keynote speaker, renowned PR historian and journal editor, Ray E. Hiebert. The conference video report, Abstracts and Proceedings are all posted on this website. Public Relations Review will be publishing an IHPRC 2011 special issue with seven papers chosen from this conference.
Planning is well advanced for the 2012 Conference, which will continue to be held at Bournemouth University in the central south of England, with the 2012 abstracts available on this website.
Travel to Bournemouth
Delegates from outside the UK mostly fly into Heathrow Airport, which is London’s main airport, and then travel to Bournemouth by train, coach or hire car. From Heathrow, there are regular coaches from the central bus station and terminals 4 and 5 to Bournemouth. They stop at the transport interchange near the town’s rail station; don’t go on to the coach stop at the university. From Bournemouth station, it’s a short taxi trip to the conference hotel. There is a RailAir coach service from the Heathrow terminals to Woking rail station where you catch the train to Bournemouth.
Others spend a few days in London as tourists and then take a train from Waterloo station to Bournemouth (with a terminus of Weymouth). Journey time is around 1hr 45min. Waterloo is on the underground Tube network on the Northern, Bakerloo and Jubilee lines.
Bournemouth has a limited range of scheduled flights mainly in the UK and nearby Europe. It is possible to fly to Paris or Amsterdam and get a connection to Southampton. Immediately by that airport, you can catch a train west to Bournemouth about 40 minutes away.
Conference Hotel
The conference hotel, which is 5 minutes’ walk from the conference venue, is the Ramada Encore in Bath Road, Bournemouth (there is a 5-7 minute walk to the sea in the other direction). The hotel has a block of rooms set aside for IHPRC delegates and has a special price for clients connected with Bournemouth University. The rates are £56.00 per room per night for sole occupancy and £63.00 per room per night for double occupancy and include breakfast. Delegates should telephone + 44 1202 291266 or email in order to book their rooms directly with the hotel. The email address is: reservations@encorebournemouth.co.uk. Don’t use the online booking system!
There are many, many other hotels in Bournemouth, so don’t feel restricted to the Ramada Encore. You want to be in the Lansdowne or East Cliff areas.
We look forward to welcoming you to Bournemouth University on July 11-12, 2012.
