BU Emeritus Professor Seán Street returns to the Radio 4 airwaves on Saturday 21 April at 8pm, with a repeat of his memorable programme, ‘Walls of Sound’.

In it Professor Street explores the forgotten treasures of the British Library Sound Conservation Centre, including a recording of bird – the last survivor of its species – made in the Philippines.

“The bird’s mate had been killed in a hurricane shortly before the recording,” said Professor Street. “Here he is, calling out to her, not knowing that he is now completely alone in the world. So when that bird died, there were no more of his species on earth. It’s a bit like hearing the call of the Dodo I suppose.”

The broadcast comes just before Professor Street gives a presentation on his current book ‘The Poetry of Radio – The Colour of Sound’ (Routledge), at the British Library itself. More information about this event can be found here.

Bournemouth University’s (BU) Associate Professor, artist and practice-based researcher Neal White is travelling to Washington DC for 1×1; an art project commemorating victims of the tsunami that hit Japan one year ago.

The exhibition is organised by London based art and research organization, the Office of Experiments, which is led by Neal.

The project sees 1000 vials of symbolic tears being used to water the 3000 Cherry Trees donated to Washington DC by Tokyo 100 years ago.

Neal said: “Tsunamis know no national borders, any more than oceans know their names, or radiation can be contained from the flow of water, filtered from the rain, cleaned from the sea or plied from our tears. How can people forget, how can culture respond or science calculate and society mitigate for the events of one year ago, a tragedy that will unfold through time and space beyond the confines of Japan’s national borders to affect and touch us all.”

Eighty-nine years since the launch of the BBC’s 6BM in Bournemouth, Professor Sean Street will discuss the history of this early radio station on its twenty-first century counterpart, BBC Radio Solent.

As a Bournemouth University Emeritus Professor, and celebrated radio historian, the development of 6BM is a subject particularly well known to Professor Street.

The station was one of Britain’s first ever radio stations, opening in October 1923 in a building on Holdenhurst Road (coincidentally directly opposite where Bournemouth University’s Executive Business Centre now stands).

6BM regularly broadcast concerts by the Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra, which became the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under its founder, Sir Dan Godfrey.

By the 1930s, 6BM gave way to the fully networked corporation but not before the station became the first ever in Britain to broadcast a ‘commercial’.

To find out more about 6BM, listen to Professor Sean Street’s interview on Radio Solent tomorrow (Thursday 22 March 2012) between 12:00-13:00.

Professor Stuart Allan from the Media School at Bournemouth University contributed to a lively discussion on the future of newspapers, aired on BBC Radio Solent at 11:30 this morning.

As Director of the Centre for Journalism and Communication Research, Professor Allan was invited to join the debate based on his extensive academic expertise in the field.

When discussing the shift towards digital news consumption, Professor Allan commented that newspapers are thinking of themselves more as ‘news organisations’ now, that happen to have a print version, as opposed to limiting themselves to single channel outlets.

He commented that much of the online news content is created by the newspaper organisations, as they are the companies who invest in quality investigative reporting.

Speculation surrounding newspapers’ possible move towards more niche audiences was reinforced by Allan’s prediction that they will provide ‘commentary and interpretation’ of news rather than breaking news.

The ‘shifting economic model of news consumption’, the migration of advertisers to online outlets and the still strong habit of buying local newspapers were also discussed.

The debate was led by BBC presenter Alex Dyke, with contribution from BBC producer Jennifer Nicholson. The interview can be heard via the BBC iPlayer.

On 14 July you can hear BU’s Professor Seán Street on Radio 4 talking about the French film director, Jaques Demy (famed for creating the film musical ‘The Umbrellas of Cherbourg’). The programme is to mark Bastille Day and Seán joins the actress Cetherine Deneuve! You can find out more about the programme here

Seán’s poetic feature ‘Then-Now’ will also be repeated on Radio 4 on 22 July. Sean describes the piece as “an experimental programme about time in which I and the producer Andy Cartwright, invited listeners from all over the UK to send us a recording of the same minute, and then made a radio poem out of them all – about 120 in all.”

This fascinating programme was first broadcast in 2006, and won a New York Radio Festival World Medal for editing.
