The BU Research Staff Association would like to invite all research staff to an in-person meet up for coffee and cake on Thursday 24 November on Talbot Campus in F106 (Fusion Building) between 12 and 1pm.

Bring your lunch and a coffee, and we will provide the cake! (Note: it may not look as good as this one does.)

This will be an opportunity for you to meet the Research Staff Association (RSA) Reps. We currently have three reps from HSS (Sophia Amenyah, Michelle Heward, Gladys Yinusa), three from FST (Sarah Elliott, Kim Davies and Sam Greenhill) and one from BUBS (Raf Nicholson).

This will also be an opportunity for research staff members to meet those within the same community, and to provide the opportunity for us all to get to know each other and support each other.

The RSA is a network to support research staff on fixed term contracts and to provide a mechanism to feed back to the university any issues or problems that arise.

At the meet-up, we will also be discussing the possibility of mentoring, within our departments and faculties – please do come along if you are interested in hearing more about mentoring, or want to provide some input into how BU can best support your development as a researcher via mentoring.

We would also like to take this opportunity to advertise for a rep from the Faculty of Media and Communications which is currently the only faculty not represented by a RSA rep. Please contact us if you are interested.

MINE Research Cluster’s Opening Event

In the afternoon of 16 November 2022, the Multimodal-Immersive NEuro-sensing (MINE) Research Cluster hosted a successful Cluster Opening event. This friendly event was the first time the Cluster showcased its research activities since they set up the lab space in May 2022.

At the event, Dr Xun He, Prof Fred Charles, and Dr Ellen Seiss gave three short talks and answered questions from the audience. Xun gave a brief introduction to the MINE research concept and the Cluster, then reported some interesting findings from an on-going immersive neuroscience research project about embodied perception of social interactions. Fred then presented several virtual reality (VR) projects carried out by the Cluster and our brain-computer interface (neurofeedback and affective storytelling) research. Ellen’s talk summarised the Cluster’s collaborative research with our industry partner Emteq Labs. This research direction uses VR and integrated physiological measures to detect users’ emotion states.

The audience showed great interest and engaged in lively discussion with the team. After the talks, some guests visited the Cluster and experienced our research setups. This cluster opening event attracted nearly 50 people including external guests from NHS, charity, industry, and higher education. Some guests stayed for two more hours after the planned event time, apparently having enjoyed the conversation to the full. We would like to thank all guests for their interest and comments.

CIPPM Seminar: Monday 21st November 2022, 15.30-17.00, F107 – There’s something about music

The Centre for Intellectual Property Policy & Management (CIPPM) in Faculty of Media and Communication is pleased to announce their upcoming seminar on Monday 21st November 2022, from 15.30-17.00 in F107.

The speakers will be Liz Bailey (PGR, CIPPM) and Dr. Hayleigh Bosher, Senior Lecturer in Intellectual Property Law at Brunel University and author of Copyright in the Music Industry (Edward Elgar, 2021).

The talk titled ‘There is something about music’ will present six cases from the last 20 years from the perspective of unknown musicians who accused the famous of infringement (i.e., such as Ed Sheeran). With some poetic licence and imagining their perspective through case commentary and media interviews, this presentation tells their story from the ‘not so famous’ side of life and how difficult it is to prove someone has stolen your work.

This is also the story of how unknown musicians are faced with finding ways to penetrate the music industry. It appears that the only way this is possible is by showcasing their work through online sites such as SoundCloud or YouTube and playing their work to managers and producers they meet at networking events, in the hope that these people who have heard their music are influential enough to open doors to a lucrative future.

The nature of the industry provides little proof of music changing hands, paper trails are often sketchy or non-existent and denial seems to be the best defence when it comes to being accused of plagiarising music.

The courts have struggled with this lack of factual evidence connecting the original music to the accused, and their solution concludes to one of coincidence, leaving no room for further accusation.

This seminar will be useful for anyone with an interest in music and wishing to know more about the law surrounding it.

BU Sonic Arts concert featuring Suk-Jun Kim

We are delighted to welcome Korean composer and sound artist Suk-Jun Kim. His music is published by ICMC, IMEB, SEAMUS, M&R, and Vox Regis, and has received a number of international awards, including Métamorphoses in 2000 and 2008, Concurso International de Música Electroacústica Såo Paulo in 2007, and Bourges International Competition in 2001.

Kim’s research focuses on sound studies, immersive sound, phenomenological approaches to electroacoustic music, space and place among others. Kim is professor and personal chair of Electroacoustic Music and Sound Art at the University of Aberdeen.

Remember the stadium builders

With the men’s FIFA football world cup starting on Sunday in Qatar it important to remember the human costs of those who build the infrastructure. The media coverage on the number of workers dying during the building of the football stadiums has highlighted the plight of foreign workers in the Middle East more generally. For example, BU’s researcher Dr. Nirmal Aryal was cited in The Sunday Times in an article with the title ‘Qatar 2022: Dying for the World Cup”, see the BU Research Blog published this time last year.

Here at BU we have conducted several studies into Nepali migrant workers, including those working in Qatar and elsewhere in the Middle East [1-13]. In the Middle East working conditions for foreign labourers are often Dirty, Dangerous and Difficult (commonly referred at as the 3Ds). Migrant workers often perform physically demanding work in a hot unprotected environment, suffer dehydration and/or exposure to chemical, excessive use of pain killers, and unhealthy lifestyle factors (such as restricted water intake and a high intake of alcohol/sugary drinks) which may precipitate them to acute kidney injuries and subsequent chronic kidney disease [1]. Dr. Regmi and colleagues in the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences are currently conducting a study into the kidney health of Nepalese migrant workers. This study is funded by the Colt Foundation.

From our work, we can say that in addition to the 3Ds, migrant workers are likely to experience a series of other challenges ranging from language and other cultural barriers, socio-economic problems and issues to do with their legal status, to a lack of health and safety training, difficulties in gaining access
to health services. If you have limited injury compensation in your line of work, a work injury attorney can answer commonly asked questions like “can employer make employee pay for accident?”

Join the next meeting of the Public Engagement with Research Network

The next meeting of the Public Engagement with Research Network will be a bit different.

Instead of our usual structured meetings we’re holding a social networking gathering to provide the opportunity to meet and connect with other network members.

The PER Network has so far been a great way of sharing experience and best practice with you, its members, but the real strength of a network is in how its members work together.

There is a wealth of experience, skills, and possibilities for collaboration amongst our members, but we know it’s difficult to keep up with the work happening in your own department, let alone across faculties, especially when opportunities to meet other academics are rarer than they used to be.

This will be a networking mixer, held on Wednesday 14 December, 4-5pm at Dylan’s Bar, Talbot Campus.

Using gamification and play to reduce anxiety related to patient medical appointments and hospital admissions

What’s on offer?

A playful workshop aimed at children aged 7-11 and their guardians, to explore strategies to reduce patient (children) anxiety around medical appointments and admissions. Featuring specially designed sessions of Jenga, LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® and virtual reality experiences to explore and address personal anxieties around medical appointments.

What is it about?

Anxiety around medical appointments and admissions can affect children in different ways, from preventing them from seeking the medical attention they need to causing distress and worry. It can be difficult to know how to help these anxieties.

Evidence shows that structured play can empower people to discuss and examine their feelings, to help understand and address them. Virtual reality can help ease anxiety through providing an immersive distraction, or by creating a virtual ‘practice run’ for appointments. In this session, you and your child/ren will try out these fun techniques, led by expert facilitators and hopefully leave with a few new tricks and strategies.

Participants will receive a bag of LEGO® to take away with them, along with a google cardboard headset.

Please note, this is an opportunity to explore new techniques for managing mild anxiety, this is not a medical or psychiatric intervention or treatment.

About ten days ago I published a blog regarding Horizon Europe info days organised by the European Commision. UKRO have announced the UK National Contact Points’ (NCP) Clusters Webinar Series on the 2023-24 Work Programmes.

The webinar series hosted by Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) and the UK’s Horizon Europe National Contact Points (NCPs) will give you an overview of the Horizon Europe 2023-24 Work Programmes for the six Clusters under Pillar 2: Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness.

PRE-ANNOUNCEMENT: UKRI Future Leader Fellowships Internal Process

The UKRI Future Leader Fellowships aim to grow the strong supply of talented individuals needed to ensure a vibrant environment for research and innovation in the UK. The scheme is open to early career researchers and innovators from across business, universities, and other organisations and from around the world.

We are still awaiting confirmation from UKRI that Round 8 of the call will go ahead (expected deadline July 2023). Once confirmed we will announce the BU internal process to ensure we support and encourage submissions from the highest standard of candidates. For the next round we are expecting to select a maximum of 3 applications to progress to submission.

The internal process is likely to have a short turnaround time and so we suggest if you are interested in applying to this scheme you start to work on your ideas with your mentor as soon as you can. The internal process documents for the last round are still available at I:\RDS\Public\FLF Round 7 Dec 2022 and we have lots of guidance to support you available on Brightspace, specifically on the UKRI Future Leader Fellowships, and preparing a Fellowship application in general.

Online lecture to explore sustainability during the cost of living crisis

The current cost of living crisis has seen people cut back on sustainable practices and products, opting for cheaper alternatives, while non-renewable energy sources are also being revisited as a means to provide energy security.

Are these sensible short-term measures or major steps backwards for sustainability?

A free online event will explore what it means for businesses to be truly sustainable and how economic prosperity can be balanced against protecting our environment.

The event will take place from 7-8.30pm on Monday 21 November, as part of BU’s online public lecture series.

Dr Mili Shrivastava, co-founder of BU’s Centre for Sustainable Business Transformations, and Professor of Marine Biology and Conservation Rick Stafford will speak at the event, followed by a discussion and audience questions.

This is the first event in our 2022/23 online public lecture series, which showcases the university’s research and expertise across key areas. The first lecture series attracted more than 1,000 attendees from across the world.

Adam Morris, Engagement Officer at Bournemouth University, said: “We’re excited to launch this year’s online public lecture series, giving people the opportunity to find out more about our research and learn something new from the comfort of home.

“Hot off the heels of the COP27 climate change conference, we’ll be discussing this important issue and exploring the role businesses can play in supporting sustainability.”

Events over the coming months will cover the role of women in journalism, orthopaedic surgery, and the story of Stonehenge.

PGR Supervisory Lunchbites | Supporting International PGRs: Key Factors

Hosted by the Doctoral College, these one hour online lunch bite sessions supplement the regular New and Established Supervisory Development Sessions and are aimed at all academic staff who are new to, or experienced at, supervising research degree students and are interested in expanding their knowledge of a specific aspect or process in research degree supervision.

Each session will be led by a senior academic who will introduce the topic, and staff will benefit from discussions aimed at sharing best practice from across BU. Bookings are arranged by Organisational Development.

This session is focused on expanding individuals’ knowledge on the challenges of and best practice for supervising overseas PGRs. This discussion will be led by Dr Hanaa Osman, BUBS.

Staff attending will:

have gained additional knowledge of the challenges of supervising overseas PGRs
have gained additional knowledge of the best practice for supervising overseas PGRs

Café Sci: Tuesday 6 December – Understanding emotional wellbeing

At Café Scientifique, you can explore the latest ideas in science and technology in a relaxed setting. Enjoy listening to a short talk before engaging in debate and discussion with our guest speaker and audience.

We’ll be joined by Dr Laura Renshaw-Vuillier on Tuesday 6 December from 6:30 – 8:00pm.

Understanding emotional wellbeing

Society tells us that we should always try to be happy. But life isn’t perfect and expecting constant happiness can actually be unhealthy.

Negative emotions, like sadness or anger, are a normal part of life – we all experience these. The problem arises when we try to suppress them in order to only feel ‘happy’ emotions. In doing so, negative emotions paradoxically become more overwhelming, and we might turn to harmful behaviours to make us feel better.

In this talk we’ll explore practical tips, based on research, to help us better understand, accept and manage our emotions. This talk will also briefly touch on eating disorders and the role of emotions on these conditions.

Please note: this talk will explore research in the area of emotions, but it is not an intervention or treatment. You should seek advice elsewhere if you think you need help.

This event will be held at The Black Cherry in Boscombe, Bournemouth. Although the talk starts at 6:30pm, the café will be open early, so we encourage you to arrive early for a drink and a bite to eat before the talk starts.
