Academics in the UK have co-authored over 15,000 journal papers with academics in Japan between 2010-2014. Could your research lead to the next co-authored paper with researchers i

In order to facilitate this, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, through the jointly funded UK Science and Innovation Network (SIN), have compiled a list of 40 funds here where academics in the UK can submit proposals to foster research networks with academics in Japan.

NERC introduced demand management measures in 2012. These were revised in 2015 to reduce the number and size of applications from research organisations for NERC’s discovery science standard grant scheme. Full details can be found in the BU policy document for NERC demand management measures at I:\R&KEO\Public\NERC demand management 2016.
As at March 2015, BU has been capped at one application per standard grant round. The measures only apply to NERC standard grants (including new investigators). An application counts towards an organisation, where the organisation is applying as the grant holding organisation (of the lead or component grant). This will be the organisation of the Principal Investigator of the lead or component grant.
BU process
As a result, BU has introduced a process for determining which application will be submitted to each NERC Standard Grant round. This will take the form of an internal competition, which will include peer review. The next available standard grant round is July 2016. The process for selecting an application for this round can be found in the process document in I:\R&KEO\Public\NERC demand management 2016 – the deadline for internal Expressions of Interest which will be used to determine which application will be submitted is 8th April 2016.
NERC have advised that where a research organisation submits more applications to any round than allowed under the cap, NERC will office-reject any excess applications, based purely on the time of submission through the Je-S system (last submitted = first rejected). However, as RKEO submit applications through Je-S on behalf of applicants, RKEO will not submit any applications that do not have prior agreement from the internal competition.
Appeals process
If an EoI is not selected to be submitted as an application, the Principal Investigator can appeal to Professor Tim McIntyre-Bhatty, Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Any appeals must be submitted within ten working days of the original decision. All appeals will be considered within ten working days of receipt.

Medical Research Council
Biomedical catalyst – developmental pathway funding scheme
The DPFS scheme is a key part of our Translational Research Strategy and supports the translation of fundamental discoveries toward benefits to human health. It funds the pre-clinical development and early clinical testing of novel therapeutics, devices and diagnostics, including “repurposing” of existing therapies.
DPFS is an ongoing scheme, with outline deadlines every 4 months.

People Awards are two related schemes supporting projects that encourage the public to explore biomedical science. Although the call does not formally open until 14/4/16, now is the time to start working with your potential fellow to ensure that your application is ready in good time. This is a popular scheme for applications from BU and, as it has a deadline of 14/9/16, this puts pressure on your fellow academics undertaking quality reviews at an already busy time. You may also wish to avoid writing your application in August when you are preparing for the new academic year.
To this end, RKEO are providing a two-day workshop with Dr Martin Pickard (our external bidding consultant) on 16th and 17th March 2016 for BU academics and we have now confirmed additional workshop dates on the 24th and 25th of May 2016 when the workshop will be repeated – we will, however, be gauging demand for this. This workshop will take you through all aspects of exploring the call requirements and writing your bid, plus the opportunity to discuss your developing application with academics on the same journey.
You are encouraged to attend with your potential fellow but they will need to make their own travel arrangements and cover any financial outlay.
Booking are now open for these two-day workshops. Please note that you will need to attend both days. Please send your request to attend to Dianne Goodman, RKEO Funding Development Team Co-ordinator by Friday 11th March. Please let us know if you will be bringing your potential fellow so that sufficient catering can be ordered.

Each year 30 research scientists are paired with UK parliamentarians and civil servants. They learn about each other’s work by spending time together in Westminster and the researcher’s institutions.
Those taking part gain an insight into how research findings can help inform policy making, and come away with a better understanding of how they can get involved.

The scheme takes place annually, beginning with a ‘Week in Westminster’ in which the pairs first meet. Over the week the scientists take part in workshops, hear from invited speakers and spend two days shadowing their pair.

After the ‘Week in Westminster’, it is the turn of the parliamentarians and civil servants to get an insight into the world of research, undertaking reciprocal visits with their pairs.

The programme is funded by the Fusion Investment Fund and aims to support undergraduates to undertake paid work under the guidance of an experienced academic in a research position that is directly related to their career path and/or academic discipline.
The summer programme is for students to work full-time (37.5 hours per week) for six weeks over the summer. This programme will have the capacity for approximately 20 placements.

The Graduate School is delighted to announce the launch of the 2016 BU PhD Studentship Competition, with up to 20 matched funded projects available.
At this stage, Academic Staff are invited to submit proposals for studentship projects which, if successful, will be advertised to recruit PhD candidates for a September 2016 start.

NERC will scope three new areas for potential large-scale strategic research investments over spring 2016:
These potential ‘strategic programme areas’ (SPAs) have emerged from the ideas process for strategic research, where NERC captures and builds on ideas for excellent strategic science coming directly from the environmental science community. 2015 saw the second cut-offs for ideas for strategic research, with 21 ideas received for SPAs.
NERC’s Strategic Programme Advisory Group (SPAG) reviewed the ideas and used a number of them to generate the proposals for SPAs that were considered by NERC’s Science Board. NERC will shortly publish open calls for community members to join the SPA scoping groups, which will develop full cases for assessment and funding decisions in summer 2016.
They do not expect to be able to fund all three potential SPAs, and any potential SPA must meet NERC’s criteria for a strategic programme, so it is possible that none of these three potential SPAs will result in funded programmes. Open announcements of opportunity for research proposals will follow, for any strategic programme that is approved.
