UKCGE Route to Recognition for Supervisory Practice: Deadline for Submission 25 October 2022

Are you an established research degree supervisor?

Would you like your supervisory practice acknowledged at national level? Join a growing number of BU staff who have gained recognition.

The UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE) has developed the Good Supervisory Practice Framework and the Research Supervision Recognition Programme to allow established supervisors to gain recognition for this challenging, but rewarding, role.

  • Acknowledging the Complexity of Your Role: The Good Supervisory Practice Framework helps you navigate the wide-ranging, highly complex and demanding set of roles that modern research supervisors must undertake to perform the role effectively. Informed by academic research and approved by the sector, the 10 criteria of the GSPF acknowledges this complexity and sets a benchmark of good practice for all supervisors.
  • Identify your professional development needs: Reflecting on your own practice, compared to a benchmark of good practice, often reveals new perspectives on the challenges inherent in supervision. Identifying your strengths and weaknesses enables you to build upon the former and address the latter with targeted professional development.
  • Recognition of your expertise by a national body: Becoming a UKCGE Recognised Research Supervisor, you can demonstrate to your university, peers and candidates that your supervisory practice has been recognised by a national body.

  • Individuals to complete application form, including 2 supporting statements from a co-supervisor and a PGR.
  • Individuals to submit application to the Doctoral College by 25 October 2022, including email support from your Deputy Dean for Research & Professional Practice
  • Doctoral College to submit applications to UKCGE by 28 October 2022
  • UKCGE to review application and feedback to individuals.

In line with the UKCGE guidance, individuals should send their completed application to the Doctoral College (fknight@bournemouth.ac.uk) before the BU Window Closing date below:

Launched: Doctoral College Researcher Development Programme 2022-23

I am delighted to be able to share with you the 2022-23 Researcher Development Programme for PGRs. Bookings for all sessions through to December are now open via the RDP Brightspace! There are 40 different workshops to choose from, with more opening in November!  

Following a successful trial, we see the return of the ‘navigating uncertainty‘ and ‘rethinking productivity’ workshops. I am also excited to share with you two brand new workshops to the programme, ‘methodology 1: what is methodology’ and ‘methodology 2: methods chapter’. These new workshops will form part of our research methodology month which will take place in November, more details will follow.

Not sure whether to attend an RDP session?

Feedback across the programme in 2021-22 was again overwhelmingly positive with attendees reporting the following:

  • 96% would recommend a workshop
  • 95% found the workshops relevant and useful
  • 92% found the workshops interesting and engaging
  • 94% had an improved understanding of the subject areas
  • 91% reported an increased confidence in the topics covered

HRV and Traumatic Injury- systematic review protocol published in PloS One by MSPH researcher

Rabeea Maqsood is a first year PhD student within the department of Medical Sciences and Public Health. She is exploring the role of serious battlefield traumatic injury and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) in military veterans and personnel in a collaborative project between BU and the ADVANCE study, UK (For more: https://www.advancestudydmrc.org.uk/)

Recently, as a part of her PhD thesis, Rabeea’s study protocol on traumatic injuries and HRV has been published in PloS One with open access. Watch this space for the full systematic review which will address the evidence gap in the field of HRV and combat trauma research.

ProGRess is now live!

Following our recent ProGRess is imminent message, we are pleased to announce ProGRess is now live. The new improved online system replacing ResearchPAD is now available to postgraduate researchers (PGRs), supervisors, and administrators.

Accessing ProGRess for the first time

You can access ProGRess via: https://progress.bournemouth.ac.uk/ or by scrolling across and clicking on the ProGRess logo in the grey bar at the bottom of the intranet home page.

We recommend you save this page to your ‘favourites’ or ‘bookmarks’ for quick, easy access in future.

  • PGRs (including BU staff undertaking a research degree) please login using your student account (e.g. a1234567) and password.
  • BU staff who are supervisors or administrators of research degrees please use your normal staff login and password.
  • External Supervisors please use your personal email address to login. You will then be prompted to set a password.

For PGRs and BU staff, if you need assistance logging in, please contact the IT Service Desk. For external supervisors, please contact ProGRess@bournemouth.ac.uk.    

Helping you make the most of ProGRess

If you need help, there are lots of places to find it:

  • ProGRess User Guide – a guide which gives an overview of the system and provides you with support and assistance if you need it.
  • ProGRess Q&A Document – answers to common questions you may have about the new system.
  • Attend a drop-in session with a member of the Doctoral College designed to provide an overview of the system and help resolve any ProGRess queries you may have.
  • For technical support accessing or using ProGRess, you should contact the IT Service Desk.
  • For all other queries, contact ProGRess@bournemouth.ac.uk and a member of the Doctoral College team will be able to assist.

Whilst every care has been taken to ensure the ProGRess launch runs smoothly, if you experience a problem, please log it by emailing ProGRess@bournemouth.ac.uk. That way, any issues can be addressed which will help improve the user experience both now and in the future.

ProGRess going live – Wednesday 31 August

Following our recent ProGRess launch imminent message we are pleased to announce ProGRess will go live on Wednesday 31 August. The new improved online system replacing ResearchPAD will be available to postgraduate researchers (PGRs), supervisors, and administrators.

When will the change from ResearchPAD to ProGRess happen?

IT Services will migrate all user data from ResearchPAD to ProGRess on Tuesday 30 August. This date has been selected to limit any potential impact and IT Services will work diligently to make the transition as smooth as possible. Once all migration and archive activities have been successfully completed, ResearchPAD will be permanently decommissioned.

What will happen during the migration?

  • ResearchPAD will be unavailable from 4pm on Friday 26 August.
  • All existing user data will be transferred to ProGRess.
  • ProGRess will go live on Wednesday 31 August and you will be able to access the system using your usual log-in credentials.

What do I need to do?

  • Prior to the migration we recommend you download and save any data you may need during the migration period, to your own device, so you can continue to access it while the migration is taking place.

What next?

Please keep an eye on your email. We will notify you once the migration has been completed and ProGRess is live. On launch day, we will provide you with important information including details on how to access the system, user guides and drop-in sessions.

The seminar will be hosted by the NIHR Research Design Service and will provide a great opportunity to hear from members of the RfPB programme team and funding panel, as well as from successful applicants. There will also be information about the RDS and the support available for people who are applying to the programme.

Researchers and health and social care professionals who want to learn more about the RfPB programme and the support available to them.

We can help with grant applications to National peer reviewed funders. We advise on all aspects of developing an application and can review application drafts as well as put them to a mock funding panel (run by RDS South West) known as Project Review Committee, which is a fantastic opportunity for researchers to obtain a critical review of a proposed grant application before this is sent to a funding body.

Introducing ProGRess the new ResearchPAD

The Doctoral College are pleased to announce the imminent introduction of ProGRess the new research degree progression monitoring system.

ProGRess will go live in the next few weeks.  The new improved online system will be replacing ResearchPAD and will be available to postgraduate researchers (PGRs), supervisors, and administrators.

The benefits of the new system include:

  • Integrated progress documents and status forms with key details pre-populated
  • Automatic email reminders to PGRs, supervisors, and academics involved in the process
  • Automatic recalculation of milestone dates in case of any changes
  • Greater reporting functionality.

What is happening to ResearchPAD?

My Turing Scheme experience in Nepal

My name is Sulochana Dhakal-Rai. I am a final-year PhD student at Faculty of Health and Social Sciences (FHSS). My PhD research is related to factors affecting the rising rate of CS in urban hospitals in Nepal. There are several reasons to choose BU to do PhD study. Firstly,  this university offers strong professional orientation with focus on academic excellence and employability to multinational students from multicultural background. Secondly, it provides opportunities to students for undertaking  different activities, for example – international student exchange programme. I am always keen to be involved in such types of activities for my personal and professional development.

I applied for Turing Scheme Fund to do research activities in Nepal. The application process was very easy. I had received positive support from my supervisors and team of international grants. I was delighted to participate in international mobility, because I had a chance not only  sharing my research experience to student and teachers at Manmohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences (MMIHS), Kathmandu, but also to do my own research activities (secondary data verification and analysis).

Although, it was hot weather, polluted and over-crowded  in Kathmandu, I enjoyed eating Nepali cuisine, meeting own people and speaking Nepali language. For me, there was not any problem in local language and culture. However, it was uncomfortable using public transport at times. I had suffered from of an episode of indigestion problem as well.

I loved meeting students and teachers of MMIHS. During my stay in MMIHS, I had the opportunity to share experience about my research study, using mixed methods in research study and my experience working as a foreign nurse in UK to relevant teachers and students. They were really good and inspiring people. I always received respect and support from them while I was there.

After this international activity, I have learnt how to work with people from different organisation and different place. I have developed my confidence in employability and career skills. I would like to express my thanks to Bournemouth University for providing me such a golden opportunity. I strongly recommend to other student at Bournemouth University to participate these kinds of international mobility programmes.

Vitae Conference – Career Development of Researchers

On 29th June, Vitae are visiting BU and running a series of events in one day to promote the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers.

It’s an exciting day, with sessions including:

  • An introduction to the Concordat, why it matters, and what BU is doing to engage with the agenda
  • Training for researchers on the value of professional development and how to maximise your performance
  • Training for managers of researchers on the role of professional development
  • An informal discussion about where a PhD and a post-doc position can take you career wise (spoiler alert, it’s not just a traditional academic pathway!) and networking.

Doctoral College Afternoon Tea at the Beach

A huge ‘Thank You’ to everyone who came along to the Afternoon Tea at the Beach, at Branksome Dene Room on 15 June.  The event was hosted by the Doctoral College for the BU postgraduate research community.

Postgraduate research students and supervisors were able to take some well-deserved time out to network and catch up in a relaxed beach location, with a sumptuous afternoon tea.  It was a perfect celebration for PGRs returning to campus post the pandemic, enhanced by a beautiful sunny day by the sea.
