Project Scope

The Gay and Pleasant Land? Project is a research project that took place as part of the New Dynamics of Ageing Programme (a unique collaboration between five UK Research Councils—ESRC, EPSRC, BBSRC, MRC and AHRC) on ageing in 21st Century Britain.

The project, “Gay and Pleasant Land?—a study about positioning, ageing and gay life in rural South West England and Wales” (GPL) took place over three years. Gay and Pleasant Land

Film Production

Josh Appignanesi, London-based filmmaker, script writer and director, has been chosen to direct a short film based in three years of research at Bournemouth University.

The film, Rufus Stone, will tell the story of being gay and growing older in the British countryside.

Appignanesi recently directed and script edited the comedy feature film, The Infidel. Rufus Stone the Movie

Research Findings

We have published two of several forthcoming articles on the research process: ‘Connecting Participatory Methods in a Study of Older Lesbian and Gay Citizens in Rural Areas’ in the International Journal of Qualitative Research and ‘Exploring Sexuality, Ageing and Rurality in a Multi-Method, Performative Project’ is available electronically from the British Journal of Social Work.
