NERC Industrial Innovation Fellowships

This call opens on Je-S 25 August 2017.  Closing on 19 September 2017

In response to the industrial strategy, Research Councils UK (RCUK) (UK Research & Innovation (UKRI)) has developed a fellowship programme to be supported through the National Productivity Investment Fund. Targeted at early career researchers (ECRs), RCUK / UKRI Industrial Innovation Fellowships will be a step change in the support provided by the research councils to the research leaders of the future, enabling some of the UK’s most talented researchers to undertake major new innovation oriented and intellectual endeavours.

For applicants within NERC’s science remit, NERC will be delivering these fellowships through Industrial Innovation Fellowships and Industrial Mobility Fellowships

RCUK (UKRI) 2017 Industrial Innovation Fellowships support the delivery of the industrial strategy by supporting early career researchers to explore interdisciplinary solutions as well as addressing focused sectoral needs to the economic benefit of the UK, both in the short term and long term. This scheme will ensure that the UK industrial sector has a supply of skilled researchers and will nurture future leaders in both industry and the research base.

Industrial Innovation Fellowships are three-and-a-half-year research fellowship awards where the award holder undertakes a programme of research clearly aligned with the objectives of the industrial strategy – and particularly the core challenge areas identified within the green paper – whilst maximising the impact of this research through working in collaboration with users of research.

It is anticipated that 24 Industrial Innovation Fellowships will be supported through this call and the successful applicants will commence their fellowships by 1 January 2018 at the latest.

JPICH Heritage in Changing Environments pre-call announcement

The Joint Programming Initiative in Cultural Heritage and Global Change is pleased to announce a new funding opportunity for transnational proposals. The Heritage in Changing Environments call will support the development of new, research-based ideas and knowledge in response to the rapidly and widely changing context with which heritage and heritage practice is faced. It invites research projects that help cultural heritage to meet societal challenges and contribute to the development of society. The call aims to fund excellent research that is collaborative, transnational, interdisciplinary and innovative. The total budget for the call for transnational projects is approximately 4.5 million Euros.

Detailed Eligibility Requirements for each country are published alongside the Heritage in Changing Environments Call for Proposals on the JPICH website.

The Call for Proposals will open on 4 September 2017 and the deadline for submission of proposals will be 30 November 2017, 14:00 CET.

Topics for the Changing Environment joint call

Three broad categories of the changing environments of heritage are addressed in this call:

  1. changing (physical) environments
  2. changing social and economic environments
  3. changing political and cultural environments.

Projects funded through this call will use cultural heritage to address global challenges such as:

  • the impacts of climate change
  • environmental deterioration
  • migration
  • demographic and social change
  • diasporic change
  • urbanisation and de-ruralisation
  • economic inequity
  • changing perceptions and sustainability.

New HERA funding Call ‘Public Spaces: Culture and Integration in Europe’

The Arts and Humanities Research Council, 23 humanities funding organisations and the European Commission are pleased to announce a new €20 Million Joint Research Programme (JRP) for arts and humanities researchers in Europe.

Organised by HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area), and facilitated in the UK by the AHRC, this joint research programme will fund innovative and exciting international research projects on ‘Public Spaces: Culture and Integration in Europe’.

The beneficiaries of this Call are eligible researchers located in the HERA JRP PS countries: Austria, Belgium (Wallonia), Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom, irrespective of their nationality.

The research programme will fund new and exciting humanities-centred projects involving researchers from four or more participating countries. Proposals can be up to €1 Million in value, and 24-36 months in duration. The deadline for the submission of Outline Proposals is Tuesday 24 October 2017, 14:00 CEST (Central European Summer Time).

New BU scheme to encourage research projects with prestigious funders

We recently advertised that BU is introducing a new scheme which encourages submissions to externally-funded research projects.  The below is a reminder of what the scheme entails with a few clarifications following on from queries received.

The aim is to:

  • demonstrate BU’s commitment to supporting research undertaken with prestigious research funders;
  • build research capacity and capability in areas of strategic importance;
  • enhance the sustainability of the University’s research culture and environment;
  • recognise and reward the research grant successes of academic staff.

The scheme has two pathways: i) PGR studentships; and ii) postdoctoral research staff. Each of these, and the relevant procedures and eligibility, are set out in the scheme document, which can be found here.

For the PGR studentship pathway, academics will need to make a case for a studentship to the Pro Vice-Chancellor (R&I), but with authorisation sought in advance from the Faculty Executive Dean. The second pathway for postdoctoral research staff will be automatically applied by RKEO to all eligible applications (following discussion with and consent by the PI).

Clarifications

The scheme notes have been amended to clarify that BU must be the lead institution and have a BU Principal Investigator.

The prestigious funders listed have been chosen as they carry added benefits, for example, provision of additional funds to BU, such as the RCUK open access fund; fellowships to academies, which open the door to greater peer review opportunities; and greater weighting in the REF submission and the HE-BCI report, which leads to HEFCE funding.  Whilst our aim is to strongly encourage you to submit larger applications to these funders, this shouldn’t stop you from applying to other funders.  BU is proud of all our academic successes.

There have been some comments that this scheme is only available to a few people.  This is not true.  The point of the scheme is to support you in applying for longer and larger applications to the prestigious funders so that this becomes the greater proportion of our submissions for funding.

UK Research Councils join forces on mental health

The UK’s seven research councils have announced they will be working together to encourage and strengthen mental health research. Mental health is recognised as a major societal challenge that requires novel cross-disciplinary research approaches, that is, research that spans more than one branch of specialist knowledge. They have published a new research agenda, paving the way for cross-council collaboration on mental health in the years ahead. Following the publication of the research agenda, a cross council call will be launched in early September 2017.

In 2016 an expert group was set up to advise the research councils on the development of a new mental health research agenda to strengthen cross-disciplinary research. The group was made up of leading academics in the field of mental health. It considered specific research areas that could be tackled through cross-disciplinary work and across the individual remits of each research council. A wider group was also consulted, including academics, funders, mental health charities, representatives of end users of research and service user organisations.

It is estimated that 23% of the UK population is affected by mental health problems at some point each year. In spite of recent progress, more research is needed to better understand how to prevent, diagnose and treat mental illness. Only about a quarter of people with a mental health problem are deemed to receive ongoing treatment, leaving the majority grappling with mental health issues seeking help or information on their own, and depending on the informal support of family, friends or colleagues.

RKEO Academic and Researcher Induction

The Research and Knowledge Exchange Office (RKEO) invite all ‘new to BU’ academics and researchers to an induction.

  • To provide participants with essential, practical information and orientation in key stages and processes of research and knowledge exchange at BU

  • The importance of horizon-scanning, signposting relevant internal and external funding opportunities and clarifying the applications process

Amends to NERC Research grant eligibility for New Investigators

The eligibility for the NERC New Investigators scheme has been updated from three to five years of applicants first becoming eligible for NERC funding as a Principal Investigator. This applies from the January 2018 closing date. See: http://www.nerc.ac.uk/funding/application/eligibility/

Changes to British Academy grant submission system

The British Academy have used e-GAP as their application submission system for a number of years.  They have now changed to Flexi-Grant.

If you have previously registered with eGAP, your account has been migrated to the new grant management platform, Flexi-Grant®. Before you can log in to Flexi-Grant®, you will need to reset your password as your existing eGAP password will not work.  View this page and click on ‘Reset eGAP password’ to access the new system.  If you have never registered for eGAP then you can create an account on Flexi-Grant by clicking on ‘register’ in the ‘Get Involved’ section of the same page.

You will have to register for an account on Flexi-Grant in order to apply to any future British Academy funding opportunities.  Applicants who have submitted an application through eGAP and are still awaiting a result should be able to review progress through the new system.

RKEO calendar 2017-18

Coming soon to a desk near you, or rather, it will be on your desk by the end of this month, RKEO are pleased to announce that we have designed our first ever desk calendar for all academic staff.

The calendar runs from September 2017 through to July 2018 (no August entry as we all need a well-deserved rest).  It props up nicely to stand alone on your desk.  It contains:

The calendar contains many images from the BU Research Photography competition, including this years winner ‘I am Ron’ by Chantel Cox, which has aptly been placed in December.  Thanks to all those who agreed to have their fantastic photos included.  We will survey staff for opinions on the calendar in approximately six months time.

 

NEW: RKEDF Programme for 2017/18

Following consultation, the RKEO have developed the new programme of training and development opportunities for 2017/18 for the Research and Knowledge Exchange Development Framework.

There will be over 150 training and development opportunities available.  Visit the site to see what’s on offer throughout the year.  Many opportunities are available for booking.

What’s new for 2017/18

There are 14 pathways this year, which includes the addition of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) pathway.  This will see a number of events/workshops throughout the year, with most based around the individual units of assessment (UoA).  We have renamed the ‘Working with Business’ pathway to ‘Research Partnerships with Industry’.  This is more descriptive of what is on offer through this pathway.

As well as a full programme of opportunities, we have also created a mini-programme of opportunities specifically for Research Assistants, post-docs and early career researchers.  Booking is through the main RKEDF website.

We are pleased to announce that both BU Pro Vice Chancellors will be running strategy sessions this year.  Keep an eye out for dates later in the year.

AHRC New Generation Thinkers scheme 2018

The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) have launched their annual competition, in conjunction with BBC Radio 3, called ‘New Generation Thinkers’.

This competition aims to develop a new generation of academics who can bring the best of university research and scholarly ideas to a broad audience through working with the media. It’s a chance for early career researchers to cultivate the skills to communicate their research findings to those outside the academic community.

Each year, up to 60 successful applicants have a chance to develop their media skills, including programme-making ideas with experienced BBC producers at a series of dedicated workshops. Of these up to ten will become BBC Radio 3’s resident New Generation Thinkers and benefit from a unique opportunity to develop their own programmes for the station and a chance to regularly appear on air. There will also be the possibility of working with BBC TV, a number of speak opportunities and the chance to become a regular blogger.

Applicants are welcome from researchers working in all areas of the arts and humanities. This year the call has been extended for researchers who work in areas of social sciences and medical science whose work intersects with the arts and humanities. There are a series of interfaces, and many areas of common ground between. This scheme is open to researchers whose work intersects with arts and humanities and is not restricted to AHRC researchers.

ISCF Workshop: Prospering from the Energy Revolution

Thursday 7th September 2017  – Birmingham

Innovate UK, BEIS and the Research Councils are seeking academics, innovators and thought leaders to participate in an engagement workshop to review and validate the proposed Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF) theme, “Prospering from the energy revolution” which has an aspiration to create a number of “whole system”, local energy demonstrators around the UK to accelerate the energy system transition.

Secure, affordable and clean energy is critical to our economic productivity, competitiveness, and employment. Optimising the transition in the UK first helps our economy to thrive while also opens up domestic markets and immense export opportunities for UK businesses. The UK is taking a lead in the move to a cleaner system.

A series of local demonstrators across the UK is now essential to serve as ‘innovation runways’ that link up new solutions, assess and prove clean, affordable energy outcomes in the real world, and launch innovative businesses into commercial readiness, prepared for export.

UKRI launch website

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has launched an interim website .

The website will be a source to access information and news about the development of the UKRI ahead of its formal creation in April 2018. UKRI will operate across the UK and will have a total budget of £6 billion per year. It will bring together the Research Councils, Innovate UK and a new body, Research England.

NERC Early Career Researcher evaluation survey

NERC is undertaking an evaluation of its support for Early Career Researchers (ECRs) to be completed in 2017. This evaluation is the first of its kind to be undertaken by NERC to gain a better understanding of the challenges and issues facing ECRs during this crucial period for their career development.

The outcomes of this evaluation will determine whether current NERC strategy and activities are effective at maintaining a healthy research base for the environmental sciences, and ensuring the training and opportunities available for NERC ECRs are appropriate for facilitating success in the broad range of careers they enter.

The evidence to inform this evaluation will be collected through an online survey developed by market research specialists, DJS Research, NERC, and its advisory boards. The audience for this survey is primarily ECRs within NERC’s remit but it also provides the opportunity for employers of ECRs and other key stakeholders to provide feedback. This survey will be complemented by case study interviews to provide further information concerning the insights arising from the survey and explore in greater depth the challenges facing ECRs.

The online survey will run from 3 August to 2 October 2017 and NERC intends to publish the findings of this evaluation in December 2017.

Research Professional – all you need to know

To really make the most of your Research Professional account, you should tailor it further by establishing additional alerts based on your specific area of expertise. The Funding Development Team Officers can assist you with this, if required.

Research Professional are running a series of online training broadcasts aimed at introducing users to the basics of creating and configuring their accounts on ResearchProfessional. They are holding monthly sessions, covering everything you need to get started with ResearchProfessional. The broadcast sessions will run for no more than 60 minutes, with the opportunity to ask questions via text chat. Each session will cover:

  • Self registration and logging in
  • Building searches
  • Setting personalised alerts
  • Saving and bookmarking items
  • Subscribing to news alerts
  • Configuring your personal profile
