NERC Workshop: Identifying Challenges for a Sustainable Digital Society

Deadline for Expressions of Interest: 14 May 2020 at 16:00

The EPSRC Digital Economy Theme welcomes Expressions of Interest for a one-day virtual workshop to explore how research can tackle the challenges in establishing a Sustainable Digital Society.

It is intended that the outputs of the workshop will be used to scope a Digital Economy Theme call to be funded by EPSRC for up to £5m.

The virtual workshop will be held on Thursday 11 June 2020.

Virtual Workshops for PGRs

If you were already booked to attend the face-to-face workshop you do not need to rebook, this has been automatically transferred to the online session.

PGR Poster Showcase

Over the next few months we were due to showcase postgraduate research posters from The 11th Annual Postgraduate Research Conference in the Lees Gallery on Talbot Campus however, due to the lockdown we can no longer highlight the incredible research our students are undertaking in this way.

So, like many other activities across the University, we are taking it virtual. Look out over the coming weeks for a showcase of posters from PGRs across all four Faculties.

PGR [Virtual] Lunches

While the regular PGR lunches have been physically postponed we feel it is important to remain connected and so, with the lovely Ruth from Faith and Reflection, we are delighted to be running the very first virtual PGR ‘lunch’.

No lunch required, feel free to just join for a break, chat and catch-up.

UKRO Webinar: COVID-19 and EU Funding Update – 3/4/20

UKRO is pleased to announce the latest in its series of webinars, which will take place at 10.30-11.30 (UK time) on Friday 3 April on the topic of ‘COVID-19 and EU Funding update’.

The webinar is intended to provide an overview of the current situation regarding COVID-19 in relation to EU Research and Innovation and will cover (in brief) areas such as:

  • UKRO services during the COVID-19 ‘quarantine’ period;
  • Known call updates and changes to call deadlines;
  • Project implementation issues and solutions in light of COVID-19 restrictions.

The webinar is intended for researchers and support staff currently engaged in projects or applying to forthcoming calls, to make them aware of the latest information on COVID-19 in respect to proposal development and project delivery.

The webinar will be delivered using the ‘Zoom’ online conference facility. No prior purchasing of software is necessary but registration via the event page is mandatory for participation.

The webinar is accessible to all individuals registered on the UKRO portal. BU has a subscription to UKRO and so all BU staff can register for an UKRO account through the UKRO site.

NIHR Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) Training opportunities

NIHR are pleased to offer five practical and interactive 2h sessions focussed on different aspects of PPI delivery. Each session can be attended as a stand-alone event or as part of a course.

Learn how to:
• Identify how the public can meaningfully contribute to your work
• Manage group discussions and get the most out of the conversations
• Work successfully with members of the public
• Communicate in plain English

These sessions are open to all researchers working in health and social care across Wessex. These events are not designed for public members although some may benefit from sessions where there is clear overlap with their role. Public members will apply and be prioritised using the same criteria and should be supported by their research team and/or PPI lead in their application. Travel and time reimbursement for their attendance would need to be met by the research team.

Research & Knowledge Exchange Development Framework – survey closes in 5 days!

The Research & Knowledge Exchange Framework (RKEDF) is now into its fourth year.  It offers training and development opportunities to academics at all stages of their career, supporting staff to increase their skills, knowledge and capabilities.

The RKEDF offers a range of support including sessions for those who are new to research or to BU, for staff who want to further develop their research careers and for people who want to disseminate their research findings or create an impact plan.

The Research Development & Support team are currently planning activities and sessions for the 2020/21 programme of events and would like to hear your ideas and suggestions.  What’s worked well?  What would you changed?  Are there any other sessions or training materials you’d like to see included?  We’d like to hear both from people who have engaged with the RKEDF and those who haven’t.

A three-day Sandpit focused on Digital Technologies for Health and Care

UKRI have announced an opportunity to apply to attend a sandpit on Digital technologies for Health and Care.

This is the first sandpit in a series of three which will be advertised over the next three years.

The theme for this sandpit is novel digital technologies for improved self-monitoring and health management. The sandpit will run over three days starting mid-morning on Tuesday 30 June 2020 and finishing mid-afternoon on Thursday 02 July 2020.
