BU academic honoured in Nepal

BU Professor Edwin van Teijlingen was honoured by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Mahendra Bahadur Pandey yesterday in Kathmandu. Prof. van Teijlingen was honoured for “his contributions to capacity building and health research in Nepal.” In the presentation listing his achievements of over ten-years of research in Nepal it was highlighted that he has supervised eight Nepalese PhD students to completion in the UK as well as numerous MSc students from Nepal. Several of his former student attended the ceremony. Furthermore, Prof. van Teijlingen’s work include over 75 academic publications on Nepal and/or papers published in English-language journals in Nepal.

Prof. van Teijlingen is currently Visiting Professor at two higher education institutions in Nepal. He has been Visiting Professor since 2009 at Manmohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences, affiliated with Tribhuvan University, and Visiting Professor since 2012 at Nobel College, affiliated with Pokhara University. He is also on the editorial board of several health journals in Nepal, including the Nepal Journal of Epidemiology and Health Prospect.

Most recently he was co-editor of an edited volume under the title The Dynamics of Health in Nepal published for Social Science Baha by Himal Books in Kathmandu. His fellow editors Prof. Padam Simkhada (Liverpool John Moores University) and Dr. Sharada Prasad Wasti were also present in the audience.

Edwin van Teijlingen is Professor of Reproductive Health Research in the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences and Director of the Centre for Midwifery, Maternal and Perinatal Health.

Research dissemination event in Kathmandu

Last Sunday (11^th Jan.) Green Tara Nepal presented the findings of a review on health promotion initiatives in Nepal in Kathmandu. Mr. Gangalal Tuladhar, Member of The Constituent Assembly of Nepal (the equivalent of an MP in the UK) and Former Minister for Education, chaired this dissemination event ‘Evaluation of health promotion initiatives in Nepal’. The review, coordinated by Ms. Aditi Sharma, researcher at Green Tara Nepal, identified key government, bilateral, UN agencies and voluntary organisations working in the health field. Health-related policies and intervention programmes were reviewed in this research to evaluate the position of health promotion in Nepal and gaps were identified.

The first key finding is that the definition of health promotion is generally missing in both the health sector and government documents. The review highlights further that key gaps in health promotion exist in the field of (a) mental health and (b) care for the elderly. Of the five key approaches to health promotion: (1) medical/preventive; (2) behaviour change; (3) educational; (4) empowerment; and (5) social change, the most common approaches in Nepal appears to be adhering to the ‘medical/preventative’ and ‘education’.

Geographically the focus of interventions appears to be the easier to reach districts. BU Prof. Edwin van Teijlingen observed “This concentration of activities, often in and around larger cities, is common across the globe in terms of both health service provision and health promotion interventions.” Prof. Padam Simkhada (Liverpool John Moores University and Visting Faculty at BU) highlighted the lack of coordination across those working in the wider health promotion field. Many organisations are doing interesting and useful health promotion work, but each seems to be doing so in relative isolation.

The workshop was attended by a range of international and national non-governmental organisations, national politicians, and many other stakeholders including the media. The event was covered in the national media (see picture). The Green Tara Nepal Chair Krishna Lamsal added: “This dissemination workshop follows on from the First National Health Promotion Conference in Nepal which we organised in early 2013. The conference, jointly organised by Bournemouth University, brought together nearly 300 people for the first time to discuss key issues in health promotion.”

This dissemination event of joint research is the first step to creating an impact on policies and service provision in Nepal at a national level.

Health Link Nepal

Today I attended an interesting Health Link event in Kathmandu with Dr. Poonam Thapa speaking on ‘Subjects to Citizens: From Safe Motherhood to Safe Womanhood’ and Prof. Kiran Bajracharya presenting on ‘Midwife related skills, SMP actions, Current initiatives and challenges’.

Prof. Bajracharya put forward a strong case in favour of a midwifery profession in Nepal based on the three ICM pillars. Prof. Bajracharya is chair of MIDSON, the Midwifery Organisation of Nepal and co-author of our paper ‘Nepal needs midwifery’.(1)

The Health Link initiative has been launched to mark the close links between the United Kingdom and Nepal in the development of Nepal’s health sector and the forthcoming 200 years of UK-Nepal diplomatic relations. Health Link has a website with information on UK-Nepal health sector coordination and cooperation. It gives information on UK organisations working on health in Nepal and publications on health in Nepal that have a UK connection. Several of Bournemouth University contributions are highlighted on the Health Link website. The initiative is also hosting a series of discussion programmes and seminars on current health topics and research carried out by British and Nepalese health workers and researchers.

PARI: Strengthening Health Research in Nepal

Nepal has limited capacity in health research. As a result, it leads to a restriction in the ability to implement evidence-based health care. PARI (Partnership on Improving Access to Research Literature for Higher Education Institutions in Nepal), a partnership between Tribhuvan University, three UK universities (Bournemouth, Sheffield and Aberdeen), and the Development Resource Centre, Kathmandu, is a project aimed at supporting and enhancing health research in Nepal. The main objective of PARI is to move university lecturers away from textbook teaching and make them more critical of the academic literature available on the Internet. This lecture will dwell on the experience of PARI so far as it conducts workshops in Nepalis universities introducing the foundations of evidence-based practice and outline key electronic databases of health care and health service literature available to Nepali academics. These workshops were informed by: i) a curriculum review of all health-related courses at the major universities in Nepal; and ii) a needs assessment with lecturers, librarians and students of the major universities. Learning from this experience, the lecture will suggest how best we can move away from textbook teaching in health care and teach health-care discipline students how to find the most appropriate evidence-based treatment for each patient.

Edwin van Teijlingen is Professor of Reproductive Health Research at Bournemouth University, UK. He is trained as a sociologist and his interests lie in mixed methods research, qualitative and evaluation research. A large share of his academic work has been in the field of public health and the organisation of maternity care with publications of more than 200 papers, book chapters and books. He is Visiting Professor at two universities in Nepal: Nobel College affiliated with Pokhara University and Manmohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences affiliated with Tribhuvan University. He is book review editor of Sociological Research Online.

Professor van Teijlingen has co-edited several books, including Midwifery and Medicalization of Childbirth: Comparative Perspectives (2004); Birth by Design: Pregnancy, Midwifery Care and Midwifery in North America and Europe (2001), which was short-listed for the 2004 BSA Medical Sociology Book Prize. Most recently he is co-editor of The Dynamics of Health in Nepal, published recently by Social Science Baha.

£9.5m funding – Integrated supply chains for Energy systems

Innovate UK has launched a funding competition with up to £9.5m available to address the need for a diverse mix of energy sources and systems.

The aim of this competition is to encourage cross-sector supply chains that can deliver integrated energy solutions to meet the many energy systems challenges of achieving a low-carbon economy by 2050.Projects should focus on both the demand and supply side across the energy networks of electricity, heat and combustible gases.

This is a two-stage competition with a first stage of feasibility studies. Up to three projects will then be chosen for follow-on collaborative research and development (R&D) following a collaboration workshop on conclusion of the feasibility stage. At each stage, projects must be led by a business.

If so, BUDI would like to invite the person with dementia and their carer to become part of a new BUDI Orchestra starting this January 2015. We would like them to share their musical talents and take part in a music evaluation hosted by BUDI and professional musicians.

We hope to evaluate the effects of a novel music initiative on their daily lives. They will have the opportunity to learn a new instrument, sing, or showcase their existing musical talents to their peers.

No previous musical experience is necessary, we’re looking for people who are willing to come along and ‘give it a go’!

Maternity research in Afghanistan

Just after I blogged about the first publication for 2015, I was informed by BU PhD student Rachel Arnold that our article: “Understanding Afghan health care providers: A qualitative study of the culture of care in a Kabul maternity hospital” is included in the first issue of 2015 of the journal BJOG.

Capacity Building in Health Research is Focus of International Symposium in Nepal

On 3 January 2015, a day-long symposium dedicated to research capacity building in Nepal will feature mixed-methods research in health and health care. The event is jointly organised by Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Pokhara, Nepal, two UK universities, namely Bournemouth University (BU) and Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), and the Confederation of Epidemiological Associations (CEA). The International Symposium on Mixed-Methods Research will promote the use of mixed-methods research designs. International experts from various health and social disciplines will come together to present and discuss best practices in the field.

“We have been working for more than ten years to help Nepal build capacity in health research” said Edwin van Teijlingen, one of the symposium presenters and BU Reproductive Health Research Professor. “The symposium is a great opportunity to learn about mixed-methods research and its potential for research into public health, care provision or health promotion.”

Presenters include Dr. Rose Khatri from LJMU will introduce the background to qualitative and quantitative research. Dr. Bibha Simkhada will illustrate the use of mixed-methods as applied in a largely qualitative maternity care study in rural Nepal. Dr. Brijesh Sathian, editor of the Nepal Journal of Epidemiology, will outline key quantitative issues in a mixed-methods approach. Dr. Padam Simkhada, Professor at Liverpool John Moores University will discuss some of the intricacies of mixed-methods approaches.

Dr. Sharada Prasad Wasti, Monitoring and Evaluation Advisor in Family Health International (FHI 360) Nepal on an HIV/AIDS (a programme funded project by the World Bank) will present some of the practical issues of working in the field of HIV research using mixed methods. BU professor Edwin van Teijlingen will discuss some of the more theoretical issues and offer some advice on writing up and publishing mixed-methods studies.

The symposium presenters have all conducted health research in Nepal and between them have more than one hundred scientific papers and book chapters on the country’s state of health and health care system. Both Prof. Padam Simkhada and Dr. Bibha Simkhada are Visiting Faculty at BU.

I am a Funding Development Officer supporting the endeavours of the Faculty of Science & Technology to succeed in being awarded research funding. I am here to provide assistance in the pre-award process. My work days are Tuesdays to Fridays. I will either be at Melbury House or in Christchurch House (phone number 01202 68247). Please do not hesitate to leave me emails any time and I will attend to them as soon as possible.

As a brief background to myself, just before commencing in this role, I was the Senior Research & Knowledge Exchange Officer at the Arts University Bournemouth as secondment cover. During that time, I managed research degree students and academic research, under which there was funding development work. Before that, I have relocated with my family from Australia, having worked for 7 years in the Western Australian State Government in legal, policy and research roles.

My interests are travelling, hiking, painting and fine dining.

Funding Opportunity: The International Partnership and Mobility Scheme

The International Partnership and Mobility Scheme aims to support the development of partnerships between the UK and other areas of the world where research excellence would be strengthened by new and innovative initiatives and links.

In this round the Scheme is open to three-year and one-year awards for research partnerships between scholars in the UK and scholars in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, Eurasia, South Asia, East and South-East Asia. Please note that applicants must be of postdoctoral or equivalent status. Research must be in the field of the humanities or social sciences.

Both a principal applicant and co-applicant are required for this scheme. The principal applicant must be ‘ordinarily resident’ in the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands and must be able to demonstrate that they will be based at their present employing research-active institution in the UK for the duration of the award. The co-applicant must be an academic based in a research-active institution in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, Eurasia, South Asia, East or South-East Asia and must also be able to demonstrate that they will be based at their present employing institution for the duration of the award.

The 2015 round is now open for applications. The deadline for applying will be Wednesday, 11 February 2015 (17:00 pm UK time).

Festival of Learning 2015– what could you do? A comedy evening?

Can you present your research through comedy? Here are a few ‘top’ examples from the sensational ‘Bright Club’ ran by UCL:

If you are new to running a free public engagement event, an evening like ‘Bright Club’ is sure to be an enjoyable first experience. It’s exciting, innovative and creative structure brings together those from the academia world and those outside into a relaxed, informal setting where research can be communicated through an interactive and engaging way.

Throughout the evening, those researchers participating would be allocated a short time to present their comical performance on their research and there would be a professional host to ‘kick’ off and manage the evening.

Being involved in an event like this is a fantastic way to ‘brush-up’ on your presentation and performance skills and allows you to share your research in an entertaining and memorable way. It is also a fantastic way of raising awareness of your research and influencing the attitudes and values of your audience to your research.

A comedy club style evening is also very beneficial for both the audience members, and the performers. The members of the audience are able to hear about all the interesting research that goes on behind our institutional walls, learn from this and have a good time! Performers and researchers also benefit greatly as they develop/improve skills, gain feedback on their research – and have a good time!

Festival of Learning 2015 – what could you do? Live-lab experiments?

As part of the Festival of Learning 2015, my colleague Rebecca Edwards and I are planning on including a series of ‘live-lab’ experiments throughout the Festival. The Festival of Learning feedback in 2013, mentioned that members of the public liked to get hands-on and physically involved with the experiments and loved learning new things about themselves. Some ideas that spring to mind could be a series of psychology experiments, perception experiments or science experiments. Note: However much they love to watch the experiment, they love to do it themselves even more! Organising an event like this, is what will enhance the Festival ‘feel’ and ‘atmosphere’, so we are encouraging researchers to organise as many activities like this as possible!

Running a ‘live-lab’ session also holds many benefits for you, as a researcher. By involving the members of the general public in your experiments, you can easily collect and collate data, that might have proven tricky to get before. It will also increase your sample size, in 2013 more than 4,000 people attended events at the Festival of Learning.

BU researchers that have engaged with the public have spoken about how much fun it was!

Here are some stimulating examples:

1) Perception – Organised by the Cambridge Science Centre

Is seeing believing? Find out how illusions can fool your brain and reveal how we really perceive the world around us.

Why not organise a showcase of experiments, where people can test how easily their brain is fooled and the science behind illusions?

2) Animal Adaptions – British Science Festival 2012

How do cheetahs run so fast yet manage to turn so quickly? How do whales dive so deep? Why do marine iguanas sneeze? This is an exciting workshop where you can help scientists do wacky experiments to explore the wonderful ways that animals are adapted to their environments.

3) Why don’t we eat as we intend? The Psychology of Dietary Control – British Science Festival 2012

We all know what we should and shouldn’t eat. However, tasty high calorie foods surround us and, as a result, most of us struggle to stick to our dietary intentions. Discuss the psychology of dietary control and take part in a range of psychological tests designed to illustrate why resisting temptation is so hard.

4) Drugs and Sport – British Science Festival 2013

Drug use in sport has never been far from the headlines. In this workshop, you can explore the science behind the headlines and find out how athletes are tested for drugs by carrying out some of the tests yourself on simulated samples.

Masterclass Systematic Reviewing

We a happy to announce a two-day Masterclass on Systematic Reviewing at Bournemouth University led by Professors Hundley and van Teijlingen. One way of collating and assessing the best possible evidence is through a method called ‘systematic reviewing’. Systematic reviewing is a specific research method whereby a structured, rigorous, and objective approach is used to provide a critical synthesis of the available evidence on a particular topic. This masterclass will examine the rationale for systematic reviews and take participants through the various elements of a systematic review: selecting (electronic) databases; literature searching; data extraction; data synthesis; interpretation and reporting.

The Masterclass will be held in the Executive Business Centre, Holdenhurst Road, Bournemouth on 9-10 February 2015.

BU collaborates in International Symposium in Nepal on Mixed-Methods Research

This international symposium introduces researchers and academics in Nepal to the basics of mixed-methods research. The symposium will be held on 3^rd January 2015 at Manipal Medical College in Pokhara, Nepal.

The symposium is jointly organised by Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Pokhara, Nepal, Liverpool John Moores University, UK, Bournemouth University, UK & CEA (Confederation of Epidemiological Associations). Bournemouth University will be represented in Nepal by Prof. Edwin van Teijlingen. Prof. van Teijlingen is a medical sociologist in the Centre for Midwifery, Maternal & Perinatal Health. He has conducted mixed-methods research for over two decades and he has published more than 200 papers and book chapters. Many of his publications are based on research that uses mixed-methods. Two of the other four symposium presenters at the symposium are Visiting Faculty at Bournemouth University (Prof. Padam Simkhada based at Liverpool John Moores University and Dr. Bibha Simkhada).
