18th October 2018 was a night to remember for BU PGR Aishah Selamat as she bagged this years’ Institute of Director (IoD) Student of the Year Award across the United Kingdom. The Student of the Year Award is dedicated to recognising the student who has shown director qualities in a project they have worked on in business, employment or academic capacity.
Inspired by her Ph.D. research work, Aishah mooted the idea of DataDenizens.com with the aim of advancing SMEs companies in the European continent to take on a simple analytic solution. According to Judge Junior Bammeke, Joint Institute Secretary and Data Protection Officer, Institute of Directors,
“Within her application and presentation, it was clear to see that Aishah had a very detailed knowledge of her target market, and opportunities for growth.“
On her winning, Aishah shared,
“As the award is dedicated to my parents, I would like to extend this award to Bournemouth University, the Sci Tech Faculty and Creative Technology Department for providing me the opportunity to undergo my Ph.D research with BU. Last but not least, I would like to give my thanks and gratitude to my supervisors, Dr. Simant Prakoonwit, Dr Reza Sahandi and Dr. Wajid Khan for their endless support and guidance. BUproud! “

BU PGR Aishah Selamat a third year PhD student from the Creative Technology Department has been shortlisted for the Institute of Directors (IoD) Student of the Year Award 2018. The award is aimed at recognizing students who have shown directors qualities in a project they have worked on in a business, employment or academic capacity. The IoD is the UK’s longest-running organization for professional and business leaders.
Aishah has recently pitched her project, alongside, her additional contributions to travelmanagement4u.com, UK Data Service, Global Blockchain Consortium and academic visiting lectureship to a group of judges at IoD’s main office in London. The winner of the Student of the Year Award 2018 will be announced at the prestigious Director of the Year Awards on the 18th October 2018 at the Royal Horticultural Halls.
SciTech PGR Aishah Selamat from the Creative Technology Department is one of UK Data Service 2018 Data Impact Fellow. Here in this video, she discusses her research using machine learning to build an analytical model for SMEs in the private coach hire industry and the research impact using UK Data Service open data.
Science to Data Science (S2DS) is one of Europe’s largest data science training programme. The S2DS is a five-week intensive programme where exceptional analytical PhDs are selected to tackle commercial data science projects. A list of past participating commercial companies includes KPMG, Barclays, Infosys, Hortonworks, British Gas and many more.
SciTech PGR Aishah Selamat is amongst the 90 individuals chosen to participate in the upcoming S2DS London Summer Programme this August 2018. To join the 2018 cohort, participants are to submit their written application and CV. Successfully applicants will then be invited for an interview before acceptance to the programme. Apart from theoretical and practical learning opportunities – the programme will groomed the PhDs professionally for a Data Scientist role.
Aishah is a third year PhD student in the Creative Department. A UK Data Service Data Impact Fellow also, her research is co-funded by Bournemouth University and County Coaches (UK) LLP. Her research aims to develop an Intelligent Transportation Analytical Model for SMEs in the private coach industry.

In September 2017, the UK Data Service (UKDS) announced the appointment of its second Data Impact Fellows for 2017-2018. Aishah Selamat from the Faculty of Science and Technology, Creative Department, was amongst the selected researchers from the United Kingdom universities.
An open competition for Ph.D. and post-doctoral researchers, the UKDS Data Impact Fellows programme is outlined to support the usage of UKDS data (and its resources) from the new generation of scholars. Each year, UKDS received high qualities of applications, making the selection a tougher job for the judges.
Aishah Selamat is BU first PGR to be awarded the competitive UK Data Service Impact Fellowship Award. The value of £2000 grant would provide Aishah Selamat the opportunities to carry out impactful public engagements, cover the course of her article publication or participate in an international conference. Over the course of two years, Aishah Selamat role as UKDS Data Impact Fellow includes blogs contribution to UKDS blog, develop an impactful case study contribution and becomes a data citation practitioner.
