RKEDF: Writing Academy 18th/19th/20th June 2024

Day 1 – Writing for Publication Workshop – 18 June 2024, 10am-4pm

This workshop covers a range of strategies: targeting a journal, writing to prompts, types of prompt for academic writing, ‘snack’ writing, goal-setting for writing, freewriting, generative writing, analysing academic writing in your field, criteria, writing an abstract, using prompts in series, outlining, dealing with reviewers’ feedback, writing groups, micro-groups and retreats. Many of these can be used to prepare for a concentrated spell of writing at a writing retreat – which follows tomorrow. This is a practical workshop. The aim of the writing activities in this workshop is to let you try these strategies and consider how/if/where/when they could fit into your writing practice. You can use these to write for your article during the workshop, and you have a day’s writing to develop it tomorrow.

Day 2 – Writing Retreat – 19 June, 9am-4pm

Aims – To provide dedicated writing time and develop productive writing practices.

Format

This structured retreat uses the ‘typing pool’ model. We all write at the same time, for fixed time slots, using goal-setting and peer and self-monitoring for our individual writing projects. Because we all write together, we can discuss our goals at the start and end of the day (10-15 minutes). Almost all the retreat time is writing time, with regular breaks.

Learning objectives

1. Understand the Structured Writing Retreat model.

2. Structure a writing day.

3. Maintain well-being during intensive periods of writing.

Day 3 – Free Writing Day

8.45am – 9.00am      Tea/Coffee

9.00am – 4.30pm     Free Writing

1.00pm – 2.00pm     Lunch (not provided)

Focused free writing follows the same process but begins with a topic:

• Put a topic of your choice, or even the topic of your next paper, at the top of a blank page.

• Set a time limit and begin free writing. This time, write down things that seem to be related to the topic. Do not worry about order of ideas or grammatical correctness. Don’t worry if the ideas seem to be digressions.

• When time is up, look over what you have written. Pull out ideas and phrases you can use later.

• Practice putting the free writing into outline form. If you were to use the writing to begin a paper, which points would you make first? Second?

RKEDF Workshop: Impress the Press: How to talk to Journalists – Wednesday 24 April 2-4pm

A practical session covering tips and techniques for speaking with broadcast media (TV and radio) followed by the chance to put it into practice through mock interviews.

This session is open to all academic staff with an interest in engaging with the media. No previous experience is necessary.

By the end of the session, attendees will:

  • Have a better understanding of communicating their work with the media
  • Understand the difference between TV and radio interviews and what is required
  • Feel confident in undertaking media interviews and dealing with difficult questions

Research Leadership:  Leading the Development of a Project for Funding

We are all told to bid, to ensure that bidding for research funding is a normal part of academic life. This is especially the case for those in, or moving into, research leadership roles. But, where and how do you start? What are the key points to consider? How do you develop competitive ideas and what are the key ingredients in developing a bid? In this session we draw on the expertise of an external consultant, Dr Stephen Kemp, and BU’s Professor Michael Silk to explore the key elements to consider when thinking about leading the development of a project for funding. Particular emphasis will be based on:

  • Demystifying bidding, research leadership & project development through the lens of funding applications: developing research questions, choosing partners, incorporating impact and more
  • The key ingredients for (and the ‘balancing act’ of) leading the development of a project for funding
  • The lived experience (and successes and failures, challenges and benefits) of leading the development of a funded project (at BU!)
  • Using the RASCI matrix and GANTT charts

RKEDF: Engaging with Parliament for Impact 26th January, 10:00-14:30, Fusion Building

Sign up for this practical training session led by Sarah Carter-Bell, Knowledge Exchange Manager at UK Parliament, which also provides the opportunity to network with colleagues from AECC University College and Arts University Bournemouth.

This is particularly suitable for those with little or no experience of engaging with Parliament. As well as providing insights and information on how to get your research in front of the right policymakers, the session will provide time for you to identify key committees or APPGs relevant to your research, start a list of key contacts and write an introduction to a Parliamentary team.

RKEDF: Engaging with Parliament for Impact, Fri 26th Jan 2024, 10:00-14:30

This session will be led by Sarah Carter-Bell, Knowledge Exchange Manager at UK Parliament and is an introduction for researchers who have limited or no experience of engaging with Parliament.

As well as providing insights and practical information on how to get your research in front of the right policymakers, the session will provide time for participants to identify key committees or APPGs relevant to their research, start a list of key contacts and write an introduction to a Parliamentary team.

This training event is open to academics at AUB and AECCUC, as well as BU, and there will also be an opportunity to network over lunch with researchers from these institutions to discuss potential collaborations.

Development fund from the British Academy ECRN

We are excited to announce that theDevelopment fund from the British Academy Early Career Research Network in the South West is now open.

Development fund (rolling call): This fund provides the opportunity for ECRs to hold an event, roundtable, meeting or training activity, which promotes networking, collaboration, knowledge sharing or develops skills throughout the region, and can be extended to the wider ECR network if appropriate.

ECRs can claim a total of £3000 towards their activities which will need to be paid for by their institution and then expensed back to the BA.

BA Seed funding call NOW OPEN

This year’s BA ECRN seed funding and development fund call is now live.

We are pleased to announce of the next round of seed funding for ECRs in the South West. The aim of this scheme will be to create and support new cross-sector research partnerships and offer the funding to support ECR career development.

These small awards (of up to £3K) will support the direct costs associated with activities that support new research, the development of new stakeholder relationships, broadening knowledge of a sector, future career options or accessing resources and facilities.

British Academy Seed Fund SW Hub bids will need a  e-ITB to be completed 4 weeks before the deadline so the relevant FDO can open a RED ID, prep a costing and send off the approval request to the Faculty, before the PI can submit.

This needs to be done by 30 August 2023 to meet the BA deadline of 27th September 2023.

Repurposing Your Unsuccessful Grant Applications

Have you been unsuccessful with a grant application and don’t know what to do next? Don’t give up!!

 

 

This session will cover best practice for repurposing unsuccessful applications for external funding.

Beginning from the research itself and how to reshape it, the session will then cover the predominant differences between the UK funders and the types of schemes they offer.

The value of feedback – from the funder or from peers will be discussed. Participants will be asked to select a potential new funder or scheme for their unsuccessful application and develop a pitch for a revised application.

Outcomes:

  • Understanding of what makes a successful application
  • Knowledge of the UK funding landscape and the schemes available
  • Draft pitch for a repurposed application

Artificial Intelligence – RKEDF Workshop on Thursday, 29th June

If you are interested in exploring ways in which AI could be utilised to deliver new or enhanced ways of working,

then put 29 June 2023 in your diary

 

 

AI is pervasive and will – for better or worse – hugely impact the nature of business, as well as society at large.

BU will be hosting a workshop where you can connect with expert colleagues at Bournemouth University who are involved in a range of AI research projects. There will also be a chance to find out about major funding opportunities connected with AI, build connections, and hear about support that you can access when applying for funding.

Anatomy of an impact case study online workshop – 7th June

If you’re hoping to write an impact case study in the future, or developing one for the next REF, or you would just like to know more about REF impact case studies, this session is for you.

This two-hour workshop will:

  • look in detail at the different sections and what is required for each one
  • examine impact case studies from REF2021 to establish what the panels are looking for
  • help you think about what you need to do to start building your own impact case study

By the end of the session you will be familiar with the structure of an impact case study, understand what makes an excellent one and what you need to start building an impact case study from your own research.

An exciting opportunity to be an Early Career Researcher Network (ECRN) representative 

The BU Early Career Researcher Network (ECRN) is designed to support early career researchers (ECR’s) and PGRs at BU, offering general advice, support and tailored workshops for skills training and career development. The network also provides an opportunity to form connections – creating a community in which expertise can be shared, and collaborative working encouraged as well as a range of opportunities linked with the  British Academy Early Career Researcher Network.

The ECRN is currently seeking a network ECR Rep. ECR reps are drawn from across the University and are recruited on a voluntary basis. An ECR rep is appointed via an expressions of interest process that is open to all eligible research staff. Eligible research staff are those on fixed-term or open-ended employment contracts (not PTHP/casual contracts) who have at least one year remaining on their contract at the time of recruitment. The Rep would contribute to the strategic direction of the ECRN, advising on content, liaising with members and the leads, and representing the network at BU and external events where appropriate.
