Patient and Public Involvement – the findings of a pilot programme run by Parkinson’s UK

HomeThe findings of a pilot programme run by Parkinson’s UK to explore the difference patient and public involvement (PPI) can make to research are now available. Both researchers and those involved valued the contribution made by members of the public to the research process, with particular benefits relating to written information about the research, and to the study design. Both a two-page summary and the full report of the findings can be found at the link above.

If you’re interested in PPI, we’ll be running a session as part of the RKE Development Framework, targeted particularly at NIHR applications. More information will be made available as soon as possible here.

RKE Development Framework – online materials launched for ‘Introduction to the UK Research Councils’

rc-funding-blockRKEO have today launched the first of their online sessions for the RKE Development Framework. The materials available introduce the basics of UK Research Council funding, and can be found through myBU.

To access the materials for ‘Introduction to the UK Research Councils’, please login to myBU, and access the community ‘BU: Research and Knowledge Exchange Development Framework’. From here, you can navigate through the pathways (see left hand side of screen) to the Research Council Funding pathway and then into the session materials.

Any feedback on the materials is very welcome; we anticipate that these will be expanded on and improved over the coming months and feedback will be important in this. To provide feedback, please email RKEDevFramework@bournemouth.ac.uk.

MRC offers tips for writing a grant review – useful for all!

bu-internal-peer-review-scheme-for-your-research-proposalAre you involved in reviewing funding applications? Or do you provide feedback to colleagues on their research bid? If so, some tips from the MRC for writing a useful review of a funding application may come in handy.

The full details can be found here but, in summary, they are:

  1. Know which scheme is being applied to, and check the guidance.
  2. Make it professional, not personal.
  3. Be clear and concise.
  4. Point out both strengths and weaknesses, including the implications.
  5. If a proposal is good, say so – and why.
  6. Evidence your feedback.
  7. Be aware of unconscious bias.
  8. Give yourself enough time to read the proposal properly before writing the review.

NERC standard grants – internal competition closing soon

NERCFurther to the earlier blog post concerning the internal competition for NERC standard grants (January 2017 deadline), please be reminded that the closing date is this Thursday, 21 September. Further details can be found here, but, in outline, the process is as follows:

  • Internal call launched 11 August 2016
  • Internal call deadline 22 September 2016. Academic submits one page expression of interest on research to be carried out, stating aims, objectives, potential impact, and any collaboration – to Dr Jennifer Roddis, RKEO
  • From 22nd September, peer review takes place by DDRPP, BU academics with NERC experience, and external peer reviewers
  • Applicants will be informed of the decision regarding which application is to be taken forward on 3rd October. The successful applicant will then work with Dr Jennifer Roddis to develop, refine and draft their application before peer review in November and submission in January 2017.

 

 

British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships – launches today

The British Academy is due to launch its Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme today (24 August). These provide funding for outstanding early career individuals to “strengthen their experience of research and teaching”. This will then develop their CV and improve their chances of obtaining a permanent academic post. The BA state that “The primary emphasis is on completion of a significant piece of publishable research, which will be assisted by full membership of an academic community of established scholars working in similar fields.”

If you have are less than 3 years post-doc (your viva must have been held on or after 1 April 2014), or have extenuating circumstances, together with an excellent academic profile and the kind of project BA may be looking for, please have a look at the website at http://www.britac.ac.uk/british-academy-postdoctoral-fellowships and get in touch with a member of the RKEO Funding Development team.

 

Living with a long-term condition: new paper

A new open access paper by Jennifer Roddis (RKEO, HSS), Immy Holloway (HSS) and Carol Bond (HSS), in collaboration with Kate Galvin from the University of Brighton, has been published in the International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. The paper – Living with a long-term condition: Understanding well-being for individuals with thrombophilia or asthma – discusses the findings of Jenny’s PhD study.

Much of the research undertaken indicates that those affected by long-term conditions experience this as being problematic. However, qualitative research may offer alternative insights, suggesting that these individuals are able to achieve well-being. This research identified a theory about how those with a long-term condition can adapt to it and learn to get on with their life. The paper makes recommendations as to how both individuals affected by such conditions, and healthcare professionals working with them, may use the findings.

The RKE development framework will offer a new range of opportunities for BU academics  to develop their skills, knowledge and capabilities in relation to research and knowledge exchange.

Consultation with academic colleagues has been key to its development, to ensure that the opportunities to be made available match their needs and wishes. We have created an agile and flexible Framework which we trust will appeal to colleagues undertaking research and knowledge exchange activities across the University.

Look out for more information coming each week on the research blog.

Research and Knowledge Exchange Development Framework – building a team

teamworkWe have previously posted about the Research and Knowledge Exchange (RKE) Development Framework. Here we introduce another of the pathways: that dedicated to building a team.

The ‘building a team’ pathway will take into consideration the many types of team which can be required for research and knowledge exchange. There will be sessions on working with stakeholders, and external facilitators will be brought in to deliver events based around building a team and networking for research and knowledge exchange. We will run several sandpits, each based around a grand challenge, with a view to bringing together interdisciplinary and inter-sector teams to address a major research problem.

We’ll be populating the the OD website with more information and the booking link over the coming weeks. We’ll also be providing a timetable of all events as soon as possible. In the meantime, updates will be posted on the BU research blog and the Faculty blogs.

There will be a range of sessions relating to this funder, including an introduction to the different types of funding offered, a session concerning NIHR Fellowships, and another on the Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) scheme. This will include some examples of academics’ experiences of these schemes. We will also be inviting one of the team from the Central Commissioning Facility to deliver a session on Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in NIHR grants.

There will be a range of sessions relating to the charities, including introductions to the Leverhulme Trust and Wellcome Trust. We’ll provide some hints and tips for applying to major charities, and run bid writing retreats for those planning to submit applications to the Wellcome Trust, and for a Leverhulme Trust Fellowship. We’ll also be running a session giving information and examples relating to building partnerships and working with stakeholders. More events will be added to this pathway in 2017-18 as well.

There will be a wide range of sessions relating to RC applications, including an online introduction to the UK Research Councils for those new to the funders, or to the UK funding landscape. There will be an event led by an external facilitator where you’ll have the opportunity to get you thinking about different ways of approaching the Case for Support, including time to write the document and gain feedback. We’ll run a session giving information and examples relating to building partnerships and working with stakeholders and another concerning the Pathways to Impact statement. We’ll also provide another online session to support you in writing the Justification of Resources.

Research and Knowledge Exchange Development Framework and your appraisal

We posted a couple of weeks ago about the new Research and Knowlege Exchange (RKE) Development Framework. With appraisals looming, we’ll be going along to discuss the framework with line managers across the Faculties, but you may wish to start thinking about the pathways or sessions you may wish to join in order to progress your career and research and knowledge exchange plans. Presented below are a list of the pathways confirmed at this point, and indicative content for each. Research and Knowledge Exchange development framework – introduction to the pathways

Last week we announced the imminent launch of the Research and Knowledge Exchange (RKE) development framework (see here if you missed the post). Here we provide a bit more information about how the framework will be organised.launching soon pic

The framework will be divided into pathways. These are a series of sessions, combining some face-to-face delivery with online materials, which are linked by a topic. Some of the sessions will be targeted towards those with less experience in engaging with research and knowledge exchange, whilst others will be useful for academics with a wide range of experience. You may wish to sign up for the sessions on an entire pathway, come along to the first event to explore whether that pathway is right for you, or simply join in with a small number of sessions such as the bid writing retreats.

An overview of the pathways confirmed to date is provided below: we’ll be adding more pathways and confirming events over the next few weeks.

Research Fellowship bid writing retreat – 19 May 2016

Are you looking to apply for your first research Fellowship? Unsure how to frame a research Fellowship application? Come along to the Fellowship bid writing retreat on 19 May and gain some insights into how a Fellowship differs from a research grant application, how you can ensure that you meet their requirements, and have some time to develop your application. You’ll also hear from colleagues who have been awarded Fellowships about their experiences.

You’ll be expected to come along to the day with an idea of which Fellowship scheme to which you wish to apply, and share your ideas about why this is appropriate for you. If you think this might be an ideal opportunity to work on your Fellowship proposal and would like to book onto the event, please contact Dianne Goodman at dgoodman@bournemouth.ac.uk by 13 May 2016. The Royal Society’s Parent Carer Scientist project aims to increases the visibility of people in the UK combining a career in science with a family life, and to encourage and inRoyal Societyspire current and future talented scientists to succeed regardless of non-work commitments. Stories from mothers, fathers and carers about their efforts to balance a career in science with family life can be found at https://royalsociety.org/topics-policy/diversity-in-science/parent-carer-scientist/ – the stories are being launched in small groups so more will be added over the coming months.
