Applications Open! Re-commissioning the Research Centres

Following a recent review by the Research Performance Management Committee (RPMC) applications are now open for the establishment of new Research Centres.  This process is open to all groups of academic staff, each led by a member of the Professoriate, to put forward proposed Research Centres.  Applications can be from established Research Centres, new groupings or new amalgamations of groupings (old and/or new).  The new Research Centres will be launched in September when existing Research Centres will cease to exist unless they have applied under this process (except where exempt).*

Research Centres are the public face of BU’s research. They bring together individuals and research teams from across the University to form collaborative and interdisciplinary groupings which, through the development and delivery of world-leading research, strengthen and underpin the delivery of the BU2025 vision.  They offer an opportunity for the Professoriate to engage in leadership of research that can contribute significantly to the aims of BU2025 – see leadership role descriptor – and provide a genuine platform for innovation and the achievement of critical mass.

Research Centres provide opportunities for staff at all levels to become members, benefitting from dynamic, creative relationships which cut across the perceived boundaries of discipline, Department and/or Faculty.  Research Centres provide members with the opportunity to be a part of an interdisciplinary research community, which enables individuals to join and establish interdisciplinary relationships and networks which can facilitate and strengthen their own research.

The Process

Applications (see pages 6 – 9) are to be completed and submitted to the Faculty Research and Professional Practice Committee (FRPPC) for approval.  As part of the application process Research Development and Support (RDS) will provide a data set of the KPI’s relating to the proposed membership for the past year.  This means that there are two deadlines – the first being to allow time for the data set to be prepared and the second for final submission to FRPPC.  Arrangements and the dates for submission vary between Faculties and are shown in the table below:

*Institutes will be exempt from this process and addressed later.  The following entities are exempt from this process for the reasons stated: NCPQSW and NCCA as they are externally recognised national centres; DMC, CoPMRE, Centre for GP Practice, Centre for Digital Entertainment and BUCRU as their purpose and remit exceeds the scope of the Research Centres policy and therefore the re-commissioning process

Concordat to Support Research Integrity

The Concordat to Support Research Integrity provides a comprehensive national framework for good research conduct and its governance. It outlines five commitments which the University must be compliant with as recipients of HEFCE funding.

HEFCE’s letter to all the heads of HEFCE-funded higher education institutions explains the requirement for institutions to comply with the Concordat to Support Research Integrity. It sets out HEFCE’s view of compliance with the Concordat, and provides advice for institutions on finding further information. The five commitments are:

  1. Maintain the highest standards of rigour and integrity in all aspects of research;
  2. Ensure that research is conducted according to appropriate ethical, legal and professional frameworks, obligations and standards;
  3. Support a research environment that is underpinned by a culture of integrity and based on good governance, best practice and support for the development of researchers;
  4. Use transparent, robust and fair processes to deal with allegations of research misconduct should they arise;
  5. Work together to strengthen the integrity of research and to review process regularly and openly.

Each commitment outlines the responsibilities of the researcher, the employers of researchers and the funders of research.

Bournemouth University is committed to ensuring that the research conducted at the Univeristy follows appropriate ethical, legal and professional frameworks and obligations.

European Funding for Sustainable and Climate Resilient Business – UK Launch of Horizon 2020 Societal Challenge 2 and Challenge 5

KTN in collaboration with Innovate UK is running a series of events to launch the 2016 Horizon 2020 work programme for Societal Challenges 2 (Food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine and maritime and inland water research and the bioeconomy) and 5 (Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials).

  • European Brokerage Event: Circular Horizons 2016/17 – European Business Brokerage event for Horizon 2020 funding for resource efficient business models and the circular economy, 10th September, London;
  • H2020 Nature Based Solutions – Re-greening Cities Information Day, 30th September, London;
  • Feeding a changing world – Horizon 2020 Funding for Resource Efficient bio-based value chains – farm to fork, non-food crops, BioBased products and waste treatment, 13th October, Manchester;

ERC Starting Grants call launched

The 2016 CALL for ERC Starting Grants has been launched but note the deadline for submission is 17th November THIS YEAR.  ERC Starting Grants are designed to support excellent Principal Investigators at the career stage at which they are starting their own independent research team or programme (2 to 7 years of post-PhD experience).  An overview of the scheme is available here.

ERC Starting Grants – Information and Proposal Writing Event LSE, London, 8 September, 13:30 – 16:30

​​​​​In its capacity as UK National Contact Point for the European Research Council, the UK Research Office (UKRO), in partnership with the hosting institution, is holding an event at London School of Economics and Political Science for researchers who are interested in applying for the 2016 ERC Starting Grants call.   Details and registration are here.

Each session will provide participants with a detailed practical overview of the ERC Starting Grants scheme. Participants should gain a deeper understanding of the proposal format and the key issues they are required to address in planning, writing and costing a proposal as well as tips for preparing for interview. There will also be ample opportunity to ask questions. Attendance will be free of charge, thanks to the support from the organisations hosting the events.

 

Horizon 2020 Information Day: 21 September 2015

SOCIETAL CHALLENGE: Climate –  INFO DAY

The European Commission is organising an Information Day on 21 September in Brussels to present the 2016 work programme of Horizon 2020’s Societal Challenge “Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials”.

The Information Day will focus on the upcoming calls for proposals under Horizon 2020’s Societal Challenge “Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials” and related call topics in the “Blue Growth – Demonstrating an Ocean of Opportunities”, “Industry 2020 in the Circular Economy” and “Smart and Sustainable Cities” focus areas.

Representatives of the research community, SME associations, businesses, industry and European institutions are invited to join the event on Monday, 21 September 2015 in the Albert Borschette Conference Centre, rue Froissart 36, 1040 Brussels. We expect more than 500 participants.

Events are added regularly to the Horizon 2020 pages.

If you attend an external funder event of this type, please remember to let your RKEO Facilitator or Officer know. It may be that we can help share information that you obtain with others at BU with similar interests or alert you to others who might be potential partners.

Kickstart Your European Funding Ambitions

 

 

The EU Academic Development Scheme (EUADS) is a unique scheme developed to kick start your career in EU research; it’s open to all BU academic staff seeking to gain EU funding.  The EUADS will help you build up to submitting a proposal to any of the H2020 schemes by providing unlimited 1-2-1 support from an expert EU bid writer, group mentoring and unlimited assistance with writing your application over a 12 month period.
 
The scheme involves four separate development workshops over a one year period starting in February 2015 and ongoing assistance and support in developing EU proposals during that period.   A useful budget of £3K  per participant is provided to fund activities supporting bid development, such as:
 

• Travel with the intent of networking
• Conference attendance with the intent of networking
• Pilot research work
• Fieldwork
• Attendance at external networking events leading to collaborative research proposals
• Meetings with external organisations to establish collaborations
• Preparation of specialist material or data
• Replacement teaching

The workshops will all take place in 2015 on 18th February, 18th March, 24th June and 4th November.  Application forms are available below and must include endorsement from your school/faculty Deputy Dean for Research who should be approached before beginning a submission.  Places are limited and applications may be reviewed internally to decide on the final cohort; please complete the form with enthusiasm and care.

We are seeking individual applications but applicants may collaborate within and across Schools and pool their individual budgets where appropriate – please indicate in your application if you would like to be considered as a ‘team’ along with other applicants.

Introducing Mr Lynch – Research Facilitator EU and International

Hello comrades.  For those of you who don’t know me I’m Paul Lynch, Research Facilitator for EU and International bids.  I work as part of the newly formed but amply able Funding Development Team. I job share with Emily Cieciura who covers Monday to Wednesday and I do Wednesday to Friday.  Although we may individually lead with particular academics, groups or projects we will be working as a seamless team!

I have worked in research in universities (Warwick, Imperial and BU) for over 20 years and can still remember when both impact and open access were more health and safety issues than research related.  Our recent team restructure is responding to the ever-changing landscape of research funding and the need to support academics with the wide range of demands funders make. I intend through the facilitator role to be able to offer greater support in the crucial early stages of proposal development, collaboration and quality assurance and in a wider context to also contribute to the infrastructure of learning, development and support that underpins a successful research university.  If you see me out and about feel free to express your opinions to, and ideas for, the new team.

Consulting my blog post guide – at this point I’m supposed to humanise myself with some light information – so here goes.  I have recently cured myself of an obsession with prime numbers that had led to me spending many hours, days and weeks writing out hundreds of numbers, charts, spreadsheets etc.  I am still uncertain if this is a cure or a bereavement.  Though previously resistant (#Luddite) I shall, in my new role, be seeing you on a social media platform shortly.  My cats are called Billy and Beryl.  Social highlight of the year stroke decade IS Kate Bush opening night Hammersmith Apollo 26th August 2014.  Jane Austen is King.  Toni Morrison is Queen. They are, obviously, equal.  If you build it they will come.
