Funds available to support Global Engagement through staff mobility

To help support staff in global engagement endeavours, we have funds available from Erasmus and Santander under the revised Staff Mobility scheme.

Erasmus staff mobility funding can be used to support the travel, accommodation and subsistence costs of academic and professional support staff undertaking training at an organisation/ institution in Europe. It can also be used to support the same costs for any academic staff member wishing to teach at a European university. The guidance to the application form contains more details as to the amounts available and duration and our priority institutions. Erasmus funds are a great way to build networks and gain a great experience.

Santander staff mobility funding can be used to support travel, accommodation and subsistence costs for staff wishing to develop research, education and professional practice projects. This fund is ideal to support academic staff in travelling to an international university in order to develop a collaborative relationship.

All the details needed to make the application as well as sources of advice can be found on this dedicated webpage.

The deadline for submissions is 9am on 24th October 2016.

Funding for training or teaching in the EC – professional services and academic staff – is Erasmus right for you?

Did you know that our Erasmus funding is available for those who want to take training abroad as well as those who want to teach?

Every year our academic staff visit European institutions to teach, exchange ideas and build their networks.

What’s less well known is that both academic and professional services staff can apply for funding to go to a European Higher Education institution, or enterprise, to train, learn new techniques, share best practice and widen your horizons. Would you like to find out how your job or department works in other European institutions? Explore new ways of working? Come back with ideas to enhance your role?

Erasmus provides up to €1,000 towards your travel and subsistence costs when travelling to another EU member country.

Priority will be given to staff who have not previously received funding from this strand so, if you’ve never considered it before, now might be your chance!

Want to find out more?

Well, hurry! Funds are limited so do get your application in as soon as possible. Visit the FIF website for further details and for information about how to apply. You can also contact us by email with any queries.

Erasmus staff mobility – maybe it’s for you after all?!

A special call of the Fusion Investment Fund – Hubs of Practice

You may recall from Dr Sonal Minocha’s email introducing Global BU to all staff in October that the first ASEAN Hub of Practice was supported through the last round of the Fusion Investment Fund. We are now looking to set up two more Hubs in India and China and welcome applications in support of this.

The deadline for applications is 12pm on Monday 18th January 2016. For all the updated strand policy documents, application form and more information please visit the FIF website, the Global BU pages on the intranet, and see the Global Engagement Plan.

The Fusion Investment Fund is managed by Corrina Lailla Osborne and the Co-ordinators are Sue Townrow and Sarah Oliffe.

If you would like to discuss your ideas please contact globalbu@bournemouth.ac.uk. For enquiries about the application process please contact the Fusion Fund.

  • Funds should be used before the end of the academic year

Fusion Investment Fund – is it for you?

Lots of people know about the Fusion Investment Fund (or FIF as it’s affectionately known!). Since 2012 we’ve awarded £2m spread across more than 200 projects. Here are a couple of facts that you might not know though…

Professional Services staff can apply for FIF too

FIF is open to professional services staff as well as academic staff. If you have a great idea which could change the way we work here at BU and move us towards our Fusion goals, then we want to hear from you!

What sort of ideas?

Well, in the past, FIF has supported these projects from Professional Services staff…

Under the Staff mobility and networking strand we have supplied funding for:

  • Visiting US partners to conduct research about / promotion of Summer Schools
  • My Community: Our Heritage workshops at the British Science Festival 2013

Under the Co-creation and co-production strand we have supported:

  • BU Lego Challenge
  • Sharing PAL: Students sharing their experiences of Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) to create collaboration, engagement and learning
  • Global Skills: articulating international experiences in academic and professional contexts

Interested? Then do get in touch. See the links at the bottom of this post.

Fusion Investment Fund

The next round of the Fusion Investment Fund launches on 11th May.

The Fusion Investment Fund provides staff with the opportunity to develop and pursue their fusiongoals by bidding for and drawing on these ‘pump-priming’ resources. FIF is part of BU’s investment in intellectual capital.

Fusion is central to BU2018 and with this in mind we are embedding fusion within our Global Agenda as we enter the next exciting phase of shaping BU’s global footprint. Taking our internationally respected fusion of education, research and professional practice to a global audience increases BU’s global profile and underscores the excellent performance already achieved and recognised through the recent QAA and REF 2014 results. To drive our vision forward the competitive strands of Fusion (Co-creation and Co-production, and Staff Mobility and Networking) have been aligned to help staff (particularly those new to bidding, or new to BU) make BU become a truly global institution.

Watch out for more details soon about how the fund can support your work.

Fusion Investment Fund: support in faculties

What is the Fusion Investment Fund?

Bournemouth University’s vision is to ‘Create the most stimulating, challenging and rewarding university experience in a world-class learning community by sharing our unique fusion of excellent education, research and professional practice and inspiring our students, graduates and staff to enrich the world.’ The achievement of this vision is supported through the Fusion Investment Fund (FIF) which provides staff with the opportunity to develop and pursue their fusion goals by bidding for and drawing on these ‘pump-priming’ resources. FIF is part of BU’s investment in intellectual capital.

How can I find out more?

I’m Sue Townrow, the FIF Co-ordinator, and I’ll be working in each faculty on a regular basis, to deal with any queries you may have about a future application or an existing award.

My schedule for the next few weeks is shown here. However it may need to be adjusted at short notice so, if you want to be sure of a specific date/time, please confirm it by sending me an invitation.

I look forward to meeting you!

Introducing Sue Townrow, FIF Co-ordinator

Hello! I’m the co-ordinator for the Fusion Investment Fund which was designed to support Fusion by funding ‘pump-priming’ initiatives. There are two different strands for staff – Staff Mobility & Networking and Co-creation & Co-production. I also deal with two externally funded programmes – Erasmus and Santander, which both support overseas staff travel for purposes such as teaching, training and networking.

You can find out more about the Fusion Investment Fund here and do get in touch if you have any queries or want more information. The next round is likely to be opening in the Spring.

It’s a fascinating job – I’m involved in all stages of the process – it includes providing information about the funds, helping people through the application process and supporting the pre-screen and committee review processes. After the awards are made, I liaise with the PIs to set up their budgets and get their project started, I monitor the project’s progress, deal with any requests for changes to the project or its budget, carry out budget audits and ensure that each PI carries out an effective evaluation at the end of their project. We currently have around 130 live projects utilising about £1.3m of funding.

My main aim is to ensure that high quality projects obtain funding and then that the funding is used in the most effective way to obtain the best results for BU as a whole. Simples!!

I’ve been at BU since 2011, firstly in Student Administration Services and more recently in Applied Sciences (as it was then) in Programmes Admin and student support. I really enjoyed being part of a School and one of the attractions of this role for me was the continued contact with academic staff and their research.

My pre-BU experience is mostly in Finance, including ten years in Credit Management and three as a Budget Analyst. I’ve also got some experience of applying for grants in the charity sector, all of which gives me a useful background for this job.

Outside of work I enjoy crafts, especially sewing and knitting, I love cooking (and luckily my husband loves eating!) and we both enjoy walking and photography. We bought a house at the end of last year and I am presently perfecting my skills at crossing a mud slide to get to my front door – my husband is confident it will be a garden one day! I have two grown children and in fact our daughter came to university here, loved it so much she stayed and that’s how we ended up moving to Dorset four years ago.

So – if you are thinking of putting in a bid in the next round, or want to know more about how the fund might support your work, do get in touch. One opportunity would be the next RKEO coffee morning on 4th Feb – it’ll be 9.30 to 10.30 in the RKEO office on the 4th floor of Melbury House.
