Computer Animation and Social Agents – CASA2020 International Conference launch on 13/10/2020

Bournemouth University will host the CASA2020 international conference this year. It will be officially launched on 13th October 2020. The conference programme can be downloaded from the conference website Because of Covid-19, we will host this conference fully online using Zoom platform, and most of the speakers have pre-recorded their presentation and uploaded into our YouTube Channel. The link to each presentation can be found from the programme document. There are also live sessions from 13 to 15 Oct including invited Keynotes, brief introduction for each paper and Q/A discussions.

All the sessions are open to public, welcome everybody to join us! The open ceremony starts from 1pm on 13th Oct 2020.

Fusion Investment Fund – BU research collaboration with the University of Utah


This year, I was awarded the Fusion Investment Funding which sponsored me and my research team to establish the collaboration between National Centre for Computer Animation (NCCA, BU) and Simulation & Electronic Animation Lab (SEALAB, the University of Utah). The purpose of this collaboration is to publish high quality papers, exchange innovative ideas and explore the potential of improvement and commercialization of our surgery simulator.

Throughout the year, the collaboration progressed smoothly and obtained significant results. We kept in touch regularly with our partners, shared various interesting and inspiring ideas on the topic of physically based soft tissue simulation, collision detection and the development of surgery simulator. Inspired by the insightful discussion with our partners, we have published two journal papers and two conference papers. My PhD student Kun Qian, as the main participant of this project, has benefited a lot from it. His work was awarded the winner of British Computer Society Animation and Games Development 2016 Competition. We have also exchanged ideas on funding application, teaching and research team management. The most impressing experience was the attending of their internal computer graphic research seminars which aims to promote the idea exchange and potential cooperation between different research groups. It is quite useful for us to improve the efficiency and quality of the similar seminar we held at BU. Besides SEALAB, we also visited the world leading medical visualization research group of the University of Utah: Scientific Centre of Visualization (SCI) and University of Utah Medical Centre. Those two organizations demonstrated the state of art of medical visualization and simulation, provided practical and valuable suggestion on the future direction of surgery simulator.

Although this fusion project finished, our collaboration has never stopped. We are continuing working on the topic of biomechanical based soft tissue simulation and exploring potential opportunities for joint research funding application. Fusion Investment Fund – BU research collaboration with the University of Utah

I am glad to receive the Fusion Investment Fund to visit and establish the cooperation with the world famous Simulation & Electronic Animation Lab (SEALAB), the University of Utah, USA.

The University of Utah has one of the earliest and world leading computer graphics research groups, who developed the first display of computer animation in 1976. The University of Utah Medical Centre is one of the 100 Great Hospitals in America. As the key member, Prof. Ladislav is a recipient of an NSF (National Science Foundation) CAREER award which is the NSF’s most prestigious award in support of junior faculty. In the last ten years, Prof. Ladislav published many top-level papers on SIGGRAPH (ACM Transaction on Graphics), and the total number of citation of his work amounts to more than 900.​

The link between NCCA and SEALAB was firstly established by my PhD student Kun Qian. He has contacted Prof. Ladislav (one of the key members of SEALAB) long time ago to discuss various research questions on deformation. Due to the similarity of research interest, we were constantly in touch to discuss the solution of some challenging problems. Prof. Ladislav’s research focuses on geometry based shape deformations which is an essential technique in real-time medical simulation. Our research group has developed many advanced techniques of collision detection, haptic feedback and realistic rendering for real-time medical simulation. We will pay a visit to the University of Utah, combining the expertise and professional knowledge from both partners to perfect our system for the surgery training.

The aim of intelligent video surveillance is to develop a way to provide reliable real-time alarms and situation awareness from existing surveillance networks without the enormous cost of intensive human monitoring. The tasks of video surveillance often include the detection of  the presence of people and vehicle and tracking them, and the subsequent analysis of their activities. Such research projects have broad implications for Homeland Security, law enforcement and many other types of military applications. There are many challenges to analyse a vast number of video streams in real-time to detect a range of events relevant to security needs. Computer vision and machine learning are the two interwove technologies for most of the modeling issues in video surveillance, for example, recognizing human behaviors. In this seminar, Dr. Bailing Zhang will briefly outline the ongoing projects with his group at XJTLU and discuss some relevant issues.



Bailing Zhang received the Master’s degree in Communication and Electronic System from the South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, China, and Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer engineering from the University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia, in 1987 and 1999, respectively. He is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Suzhou, China. He had been a Lecturer in the School of Computer Science and Mathematics in the Victoria University, Australia since 2003. His research interest includes machine learning and computer vision, with applications in surveillance and biometrics. Bailing Zhang has over 100 referred papers published.

FIF – Staff Networking and Mobility Project- Visiting Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) in South Korea

The University’s Fusion Investment Fund (Staff Networking and Mobility) has provided an excellent opportunity for building up international cooperation in research, education and professional practice. Over the years we have developed many international links with China, US, France, Switzerland, Singapore, Turkey etc. These international links have played a significant role in our research activities through joint publications, developing research projects, submitting research proposal for external funding.

GIST is a world-class technical university which has recently started to focus on bridging art and technology, and is setting up a national research institute for art-technology fusion supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism of Korea. This matches extremely well with the ethos and practices of the NCCA that has been undertaking cutting edge research marrying art with technology.

Dr. Xiaosong Yang met Prof. Lee at SIGGRAPH2012 and had a long discussion exploring collaborative ideas. Prof. Lee has been working on physical simulation for many years, and has produced many quality publications on top journals, including SIGGRAPH (ACM Transactions on Computer Graphics). As we (Dr Yang and Prof Zhang) have been working on character animation for many years, both Prof Lee and us at the NCCA are strong players in our respective specialist subject fields and have complementary strengths. In order to consolidate our relationship and develop winning research projects, this proposed collaboration will start with joint research on physically based character animation.

Dr. Yang will give one week visit to Prof. Lee’s research lab at GIST around May/June 2013. The network activities, including guest lectures/talks, visits and meetings, will aim at promoting joint world-class research, exploring collaborations for joint-publications and future funding bids.
