Research Professional – all you need to know

Every BU academic has a Research Professional account which delivers weekly emails detailing funding opportunities in their broad subject area. To really make the most of your Research Professional account, you should tailor it further by establishing additional alerts based on your specific area of expertise. UKRI launches new Résumé for Research and Innovation

The Résumé for Research and Innovation (R4RI) is a content-rich alternative to the traditional CV which supports applicants to show how they have made a difference.

Based on the Royal Society’s Résumé for Researchers (R4R), the R4R-like format will allow a people working across the research and innovation sector to evidence a wider range of activities and contributions.

The adoption of an inclusive, single format for CVs across UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) will enable people to better demonstrate their contributions to research, teams, and wider society.

Designed with the research and innovation community

UKRI committed to introducing a better way for researchers and innovators to evidence their contributions in April 2021. Since then, they have been trailing, testing and reflecting on how this format can best meet UKRI’s vision and mission as well as the needs of the research and innovation community. Feedback from applicants, reviewers and others has been integral to the design of R4RI. They will continue to trial the current version of R4RI in several funding opportunities to develop tools and support materials for those using it.

Changing the culture

UKRI is committed to supporting culture change across the research and innovation sector. However, culture change will not happen if just UKRI changes, they need others to join us on this journey. One part of UKRI’s role in this is supporting community adoption of R4R-like CVs by working with partners across the research and innovation sector, nationally and internationally.

Their aim is to share information about the ways they are all approaching this and to develop common approaches to resources. This includes a common evaluation framework that will help build the evidence base in this space. This approach is in keeping with the strategies of organisations including:

Supporting those considering adopting R4R-like CVs

To support the adoption of the R4R-like CV model, UKRI has created communities of practice and dissemination events including:

  • a joint funders group (JFG) exploring shared approaches towards a R4R-like CV in funding decisions and developing a range of resources that accompany its use
  • an alternative uses group co-developed in partnership with Universities UK (UUK) to complement the efforts of the JFG and explore the alternative applications of R4R-like CV in the assessment of people. For example, hiring and promotion
  • An international workshop on Résumé for Research and Innovation – a Narrative CV Approach: What, Why & How? This will share the learning from different organisations on the use of R4R-like CVs and engage with participants to understand what further support different stakeholders may need. The event will take place on 21 March 2022 between 10:30 and 13:30 GMT (online) and registration will open early 2022

The work outlined will contribute to culture change through enabling a more efficient, cohesive, and comprehensive approach to assessing what’s visible and valued.

UK Government policy week on the Blog: R&D People and Culture Strategy

The R&D People and Culture Strategy was published by the UK government in July 2021. The strategy sets out the government’s ambition to build the research and innovation workforce the UK needs, working in a positive and inclusive culture.

People are at the heart of research and innovation. This strategy sets out a vision for attracting, retaining, developing and valuing the full diversity of people needed for an inclusive, vibrant research and innovation system that can fuel the UK’s recovery from the pandemic.

In her foreword, the then Science Minister Amanda Solloway described the strategy as a ‘call to action’. Building on work by people and institutions across the sector, the strategy sets out a step-by-step approach to foster the research and innovation culture needed.

The strategy has three priority areas:  People, Culture, and Talent. The outcomes required are:

People: Redefining what it means to work in R&D in the 21st Century

Outcomes
• Attracting enough people with the right skills, across all roles
• Dynamic, varied and sustainable career paths
• Great leadership skills at all levels

Culture: Co-creating a vision of the culture we want to see in the sector

Outcomes
• A positive, inclusive and respectful culture
• Recognition and reward of all the people and activities that lead to excellent research and innovation
• Bullying and harassment is no longer an issue in the sector
• People feel confident to engage with and contribute to research and innovation
• Frameworks, assessment and incentives at an institutional level that encourage positive behaviours and support an inclusive culture

Talent: Renewing the UK’s position as a global leader in R&D by attracting, retaining and developing talented people

Outcomes
• People from all backgrounds are inspired into careers in research and innovation by the UK’s talent offer
• The UK will be the most exciting place in the world for top research and innovation talent

Short- and long-term goals are set out in the strategy.

UKRI is developing an ambitious programme of work to support the delivery of the strategy, working collaboratively with partners to drive forward lasting change.

UKRI First steps

Among the near-term actions set out in the strategy, UKRI will work to:

  • create a good practice exchange to develop, test and evaluate ideas to improve culture sourced from the community, bringing together people from across the sector to work creatively
  • launch a consultation on a new deal for post-graduate research students later this year, seeking input on funding, access, models and career routes
  • pilot experimental approaches to public dialogue and community-led research and innovation
  • co-design with partners a joined-up talent offer, open to a diversity of people across all career stages, connecting sectors, disciplines and working cultures.

UK Government policy week on the Blog. What is ARIA?

ARIA stands for Advanced Research and Invention Agency and is set to be the Government’s newest funding agency. “But don’t we already have UKRI” I hear you say? Well yes, but ARIA will supposedly complement the work of UKRI, while building on the government’s ambitious R&D Roadmap published in July 2020.

ARIA will exclusively focus on projects with potential to produce transformative technological change, or a paradigm-shift in an area of science. While it is anticipated that most programmes may fail in achieving their ambitious aims, those which succeed will have profound and positive impact on society. ARIA will be headed by leading scientists and innovators with the remit of engaging in high risk and high reward transformational research, adding a new capability to the UK’s innovation architecture.

A Government Bill is currently passing through parliament to establish ARIA as a statutory corporation. The Bill sets out ARIA’s functions – ‘focused on conducting “ambitious” scientific research with a tolerance to failure, and on developing, exploiting and sharing scientific knowledge, such as translating basic scientific research into more commercial technologies. It enables the Secretary of State to provide ARIA with funding.’

ARIA will be based on the principles of the US Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) now renamed DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). The idea is that this new research body will be independent and sit outside the structures of UKRI and be given a greater degree of independence from government in its decision-making than other government-backed funders. At present, £800M is promised in total over 4 years with £50M in 2021-22.

ARIA will use a range of innovative approaches to funding researchers, which is likely to include the ability to run prizes; take equity stakes; and issue small grants rapidly without lengthy open competitions.

Scheme for salary support for ECR Fellowships

This scheme is for ‘Salary support for ECR Fellowships‘ to support the next generation of talented researchers delivering novel, fundamental research. The scheme provides support for salary shortfalls on early career researcher (ECR) fellowship applications to prestigious funders, if awarded.

Supporting ECRs is a key priority under BU2025. ECR fellowships provide important and strategic opportunities for ECRs to undertake a significant research project, increasing their research independence and providing development opportunities for them as future research leaders.

The scheme provides funding to make up salary shortfalls and by doing so aims to:

  • Provide support and development opportunities for ECRs
  • Encourage talented ECRs to join and develop a research career at the University
  • Build research capacity and capability in areas of strategic importance
  • Enhance the sustainability of the University’s research culture and environment

The RDS Funding Development Officers (FDO) will advise all eligible applicants of this opportunity when early career academic staff have identified the external funder fellowship call on an intention to bid (ItB) form.

This used to be a pathway under the ‘Prestigious Research Funders Scheme’ (PRFS). The PRFS has now been withdrawn as BU are looking to introduce a different scheme for providing internally funded postdoctoral research fellows in 2022. Watch this space.

Want to be an AHRC Peer Review College member?

Becoming an external peer reviewer of research funding applications not only provides an excellent way to contribute to academic citizenship, but it is also an excellent way to expose yourself to high quality research, form networks with peers outside of BU, and have access to the latest research taking place.

AHRC have just launched a new round of AHRC Peer Review College recruitment.

In previous years, this has been convoluted with a nomination process and applying through Je-S. As part of UKRI’s EDI strategy, the new process is much more inclusive and streamlined. A key objective of this recruitment exercise is to further diversity AHRC’s membership and cement plurality of voices in their decision-making processes.

Applications across AHRC’s disciplinary remit are strongly encouraged from persons who identify as an ethnic minority, persons with disabilities, persons of diverse gender identities and expressions, and persons identifying with other groups who are currently underrepresented. Applications are also encouraged from people with specific arts and humanities-relevant professional experience and expertise that is currently underrepresented on the College; a full list can be found in the call document.

Changes to the recruitment process:

  • AHRC are changing the nomination model used in previous years, and instead will only be accepting applications directly from individuals who wish to nominate themselves. It is no longer possible for colleagues and/or organisations to nominate individuals on their behalf.
  • Applicants need only fill in a single application form; AHRC are not asking for Je-S submissions. Successful applicants will still need a Je-S account to complete peer review activities and AHRC will support anyone who needs to create an account to do so when they are appointed.
  • AHRC plan to merge the current PRC sub-group structure (Academic, Strategic, International, non-HEI, Knowledge Exchange, Strategic ODA) into a single College for all members in 2022. All new members will simply be appointed as AHRC Peer Review College members.

AHRC require applicants to include the name and email address of an administrative contact at BU, as they will use this to advise BU of any successful applications from your institution. If you are interested in becoming a peer review member, please contact me, Jo Garrad.

BU support available to increase bid quality – research fundamentals

You will have seen my blog post last week, which provided you with a number of pointers for submitting a good quality research bid. In case you didn’t, please read it here. I won’t go over the same information, but do read it if you want to know about the application timeline, BU processes, and what support information is available to you when writing a bid.

This week, RDS and academics will provide you with a series of blog posts about what makes a good quality bid, what success looks like, and how the RDS Research Facilitators can support you. To start your week off, I’ve outlined below some of the options available to support you with research bidding.

Let’s start with what’s available to you under the Research and Knowledge Exchange Development Framework (RKEDF). We will shortly be publicising a range of opportunities to progress your research bids at BU. Do keep an eye on OD’s Calendar of Events for upcoming activity. We will also be posting when new opportunities are finalised.

  • Research Council Development Scheme –  is a coordinated, targeted set of activities designed to inspire and equip BU researchers to achieve greater success with Research Council funding. The third cohort was cancelled due to the pandemic. This will be reintroduced in early 2022 to those on the third cohort. Any vacancies to join the cohort will be advertised.
  • Faculty Grant Hubs – led by RDS and academics, this was trialled in FMC in the summer and will be rolled out to the other faculties in due course. The Grant Hubs tend to be four sessions held over a month for academic staff (mainly ECRs), and include advice by experienced academics on how to write a research application, a writing day, peer review sessions, and EAR (see below) support.
  • Research Leadership Programme (RLP) – ECR and mid-career cohorts – RLP develops and enhances wider research-related skills through workshops, action learning, and progress reports. The focus is on research leadership, project management, networking and dealing with risk and uncertainty.
  • External application reviewers – will be provided to academic staff preparing research proposals to prestigious funders and those identified to work on major and strategic bids. ECRs, NERC standard grants, attendees of the Faculty ‘Grant Hubs’ and other bid writing sessions, and cohort members of the RCDS, will also be given priority to work with an EAR.

In addition to the above, we will run ad hoc bid writing sessions for certain calls. STEAMLabs will be held for each SIA and Global Engagement, to form collaborations and generate bids. We will continue with the weekly funder briefings. There will be a fair bit of training on research methods this year, as well as many more opportunities. Therefore, keep an eye on the blog for what’s new and upcoming.

Bidding for external research funds?

The good news is that a lot of BU’s academics are bidding for external research funding. Our numbers of bids in preparation is up by 20% on pre-pandemic levels. This is helping BU build a healthy and sustainable pipeline to good quality research.

If you’re planning to submit a bid, you’ll need to be aware of the application timeline and the various processes involved in the submission of a bid. Please ensure you read the application timeline when considering what to apply for (in addition to RDS, the following BU teams may need to be involved: UET, Legal Services, Finance). In short, a fully completed intention to bid form must be received by RDS at least four weeks before the funder call deadline.

Unfortunately, due to the high volume being processed at present (and staff shortages), we will be unable to accommodate any bids under the notice period.

Here are a few tips on what you can do to ensure a smoother process and good quality bid:

  • Please read the funder guidance to ensure that you are eligible to apply, the deadline is doable, and that the funding provided will be financially acceptable to BU (the costing and pricing guide for R&KE activity will help, as will the fEC thresholds);
  • If partners are involved, you need to ensure you have these in place as their costings will need to be included in the bid. If they are international or industrial, due diligence may need to take place at pre-award stage and so a longer lead time will be needed (we’ve produced a Leading an external research application guide, which will be useful to you when partners are involved);
  • Ensure your intention to bid (ItB) form is fully completed before submitting to RDS. This saves on multiple email exchanges to finalise the form (we’ve created sample costs to help you get an idea of budget and whether what you need to complete your research is achievable with the funding on offer);
  • Finally, run your ideas/draft bid past your peers, research mentor, or Head of Department. Constructive criticism will help improve the quality of your bid and reduce the need for last minute changes. If you have a long lead in time, an RDS Research Facilitator may be able to help review your bid content, or one of our External Application Reviewers (EARs) may be able to critique it (please see here for more information on which bids are eligible for an EAR).

Every BU academic has a Research Professional account which delivers weekly emails detailing funding opportunities in their broad subject area. To really make the most of your Research Professional account, you should tailor it further by establishing additional alerts based on your specific area of expertise. The Funding Development Team Officers can assist you with this, if required.

Research Professional have created several guides to help introduce users to Research Professional. These can be downloaded here.

Quick Start Guide: Explains to users their first steps with the website, from creating an account to searching for content and setting up email alerts, all in the space of a single page.

User Guide: More detailed information covering all the key aspects of using Research Professional.

Administrator Guide: A detailed description of the administrator functionality.

Research Professional are running a series of online training broadcasts aimed at introducing users to the basics of creating and configuring their accounts on Research Professional. They are holding monthly sessions, covering everything you need to get started with Research Professional. The broadcast sessions will run for no more than 60 minutes, with the opportunity to ask questions via text chat. Each session will cover:

  • Self registration and logging in
  • Building searches
  • Setting personalised alerts
  • Saving and bookmarking items
  • Subscribing to news alerts
  • Configuring your personal profile

Each session will run between 10.00am and 11.00am (UK) on the second Tuesday of each month. You can register here for your preferred date:

These are free and comprehensive training sessions and so this is a good opportunity to get to grips with how Research Professional can work for you.
