My state-of-the-art HOME STUDIO for ONLINE TEACHING

Dear BU community,

I am delighted to release the first video of my personal channel, which provides a tour of my home studio for online teaching. If you click on the description of this video, there’s a link to a second video on the 5 Benefits of using the studio. This second video shows in more detail how I use the studio for teaching.

Building the studio has been a challenge, great fun and game changing as far as delivering online teaching experiences is concerned.

If you have a few thousand pounds you can also buy the same equipment.

However, what money can’t buy is the accumulated knowledge required to design and make it work. Hundreds of hours watching videos, reflecting on what I wanted, trying and making a lot of mistakes along the way, and dealing with the frustration of something not working right the first time (as it should).

The learning has been both the greatest challenge but also the most valuable element of the entire journey.

I hope you like it and any comments are welcome. Share the video with colleagues if this is something you think will be useful to them. Lobby your faculty to create a few of these on campus (Sorry Deans!).

Pitching innovative charity fundraising event ideas

First year Events Management students took on the challenge to create innovative fundraising event ideas for three charities: Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) Children’s Charity, Autism Hampshire (AH) and Forest Holme Hospice (FHH), as part of their Creativity & Innovation unit.

Charities were invited to act as clients, with Events Management students having to develop the business case for an innovative online fundraising event. A different feature was the involvement of BA Events Management (BAEM) / BA Events & Leisure Marketing (BAELM) alumni as clients. After being on the pitching side during their degree, alumni working for these charities were invited to become clients.

Back in February, the three charities introduced the organisation to the respective seminar group. During this session, the activity of the charity, the sorts of online and offline fundraising events that the charity organises, and the overall strategy and priorities of the organisation going forward (including fundraising) were presented, in order to give the necessary background to the new event development teams.

After working on their business proposals over the semester with the support of the unit tutor Dr. Miguel Moital, students have recently pitched their ideas to representatives of the charities. After 15 minutes making the business case, groups were asked questions by charity representatives and the tutor.

Events Managers Freya Hill (BAEM, class of 2016) and Zara Barton represented GOSH Children’s Charity. Events pitched to GOSH included a Black-Tie Cocktail Event, ‘Aspire to be’ Virtual dinner party, GOSH: Day at school and a Spring Gala Lunch. Commenting on the experience, Freya said “I would like to thank the opportunity to be on the other side of these pitches. Thanks to the students for all the research they have done. There are definitely ideas we will be taking forward, and these presentations have given us food for thought about how we can continue to build on how successful virtual events calendar”.

Isabelle Ward (BAELM, class of 2016) is Business Support Officer at Autism Hampshire. Events pitched to AH included: a Baking competition, Themed Zumba classes, a Movie Night Bingo and a virtual cocktail making event. At the end of the presentations, Isabelle said “thank you for all the ideas, it was great to hear them. It’s nice to be on the other side because I was doing the same a few years ago!”.

Forest Holme Hospice was represented by various members of staff: Anne Currie (Chief Executive), Paul Tucker (Fundraising & Communications Manager), Lewis Hay (Fundraising and Communications Manager), and Kirsty Perks and Charlie James (Fundraisers). Events pitched to FHH included: Virtual Scavenger Hunt, a game show style event ‘Are you smarter than a child’, “A challenge for life” auction, and Cocktail Masterclass “Cheers to Being Healthy”. The alumni contact point was Hannah (Parsons) O’Hare (Development Manager) who wan not able to be involved due to being on maternity leave. Commenting on the experience, Lewis Hay said that Forest Holme Hospice representatives “were all really impressed with what student came up with and with their presentation skills. I appreciate that it is not easy, especially virtually but I thought they all did a great job.”

Dr. Miguel Moital, the unit tutor, said: “Having resumed teaching this unit after a 6 year break, I was excited about about the opportunity to help students to develop their business development and product innovation skills. This year we had to adapt and instead of using local hospitality and tourism businesses, students developed a new virtual event concept for well-known local and national charities. This brought added challenges because (fundraising) virtual events are pretty much in their infancy. Student teams worked hard throughout the semester and I was pleased to see some very strong business cases which embedded high levels of creativity”.

Working with the Brazilian Tourism Research Community – H2, 2020 in review

Hello BU community,

I am Dr. Miguel Moital, a Principal Academic in Events Management within the Department of Sport & Events Management (BUBS).

As the year comes to an end, I take the opportunity to summarise my involvement in 5 events and initiatives with the Brazilian tourism research community during the second half of 2020.

 

ANPTUR workshop, December 3

Yesterday I co-led a 2 hour workshop about ‘Academic writing an international publication’, one of the training events within the official programme of the 17th Annual Congress of the Brazilian Association for Research and Post- Graduate Studies in Tourism (ANPTUR).

The workshop, Co-delivered with Dr. Verônica Feder Mayer, Associate Professor of Tourism at the Fluminense Federal University, focused on the role of theory in research. It is well acknowledged that Brazilian tourism research is often too focused on context with limited extent of theorisation. Myself and Dr. Mayer, who has published several articles in top tourism journals, felt that this would be a good opportunity to further developed the community’s skills and knowledge around theory and theorisation. Over several weeks we prepared a range of materials which explained the differences between context- and theory- focused research, while at the same time clarify the scope and characteristics of theory based research.

The workshop was a success attracting over 200 participants, many of which provided extremely positive feedback.

ENACT Seminar, November 27

I was the featured speaker at the November ENACT Seminar. These monthly seminars bring together around 40 Brazilian tourism researchers with an interest in economics, business and consumer behaviour. During the 90-minute workshop, the featured speaker highlights key elements in the research and publication process behind one of his articles, with substantial time left for Q&A.

I presented a paper co-authored with Sabine Toppig, a BA Events Management graduate, which was on circulation management at exhibitions. Sabine was the recipient of the 2019 Vice Chancellor Fusion Prize, and our joint paper was published by the International Journal of Event and Festival Management.

After briefly presenting the results of the paper, I highlighted 5 key methodological features / challenges and explained how they were addressed and why. Participants said that at first they found the topic ‘strange’ and that they couldn’t see how you could research circulation at exhibitions, but once they read the paper (the paper is sent in advance to participants) they felt that everything made sense, at that the student had chosen a very relevant area of research. They also felt that the paper was extremely well designed and written.

International expert – Revalidation of post-graduate programme, August

At the end of August I submitted my report as an international expert assessing the revalidation of the Postgraduate Programme in Tourism of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (PPGTUR-UFRN). Current regulations in Brazil require all postgraduate programmes to develop a self-assessment report every four years. Once completed, the report is then sent to a national and an international examiner for comment.

External examiner, PhD transfer, August 26

Similar to the UK process, doctoral programmes in Brazil have a mid-programme progress assessment, called ‘Qualificação’. I was invited by the PhD Programme in Tourism from UNIVALI – Universidade do Vale do Itajai (Santa Catarina state) to be the external examiner for a thesis on Paradoxes in Tourism Experiences.

LiveTUR panel, July 9

LiveTUR was a series of live events organised by the Postgraduate Programme in Tourism of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (PPGTUR-UFRN). The last one focused on the “The 2020 global crisis and changes in the tourism and events sector”, and featured myself and two Brazilian professors: Professor Guilherme Lohmann (Griffith University) and Professor Luis Godoi Trigo (São Paulo University).

The event was expertly chaired by Dr. Ricardo Lanzarini. Given the relevance of the topic and the high profile of the LiveTUR initiative, more than 200 participants attended the event.

The 2 hour event saw the speakers sharing their views on the nature of the changes as a consequence of the events of 2020, as well as answering questions that the audience asked ahead of the event, or during the event. The event was organised very professionally as it resulted from a collaboration between UFRN and DataShow, a local company which provides technological solutions for live events.

 

500 citations!

I have recently checked my Google Scholar profile and I was delighted to see that one of my papers has received a landmark number of citations – 500.

The paper was published in 2014 in co-authorship with Professors Scott Cohen (formerly at BU and now at the University of Surrey, UK) and Girish Prayag (University of Canterbury, NZ).

Focusing on a review of the literature of one of the most, if not the most researched topic in tourism – consumer behaviour -, and published in a high ranked Journal, I always felt the paper could do well, but never imagined that it could get so much traction.

The paper is scheduled to be part of the forthcoming REF submission.

Animations & Transitions in Powerpoint: A guide to Youtube resources

I firmly believe that when you are delivering classes online the quality of visual presentation needs to be greatly improved, in particular in terms of how professional it looks. This includes using more colour, more visual elements and adding a dynamic dimension to the presentation. Animations are great to do that. A blank background with bullet points of text coming in at the same time does not provide for the most engaging online learning experience.

Over the past two months I’ve spent a considerable amount of time learning how to animate PowerPoint presentations. At May’s BUBS educational enhancement session colleagues showed an interest in knowing more about how bring their presentations to life. Responding to this interest, I developed a short PowerPoint presentation (what else!) that I shared with BUBS colleagues at this month Educational Enhancement Forum. The presentation Animations & Transitions in Powerpoint: A guide to Youtube resources has now been recorded and the video uploaded on Youtube.

The presentation doesn’t teach how to animate presentations, rather it directs viewers to (mainly youtube) resources that they can use to learn about how to animate presentations. I hope it encourages colleagues to learn more about these, while saving them time by directing them to good resources.

Recipient of the VC Fusion Prize 2019 publishes in top Events journal

Events Management graduate Sabine Töppig, who received the VC Fusion Prize in 2019, has just seen a paper based on her dissertation published by the International Journal of Event & Festival Management. The IJEFM, an Elsevier Journal, is one of the two top events management journals (Scopus CiteScore 2018 – 1.73; Scopus CiteScore Tracker 2019 (updated monthly) – 2.14).

The paper, jointly authored with her supervisor Dr. Miguel Moital, explored the techniques, outputs, and outcomes of circulation management at exhibitions. For those who are unable to access the full published paper, a word version is deposited here.

Commenting on the process leading to the publication of the paper, Sabine said:

“It was great to continue working with with Miguel beyond the submission of my dissertation, to adapt it to journal standards, carry out additional research and examine circulation management at exhibitions in even greater detail. Collaborating with him helped me refine my academic style, broaden my horizons in terms of research methods, and navigate the peer-review process which requires a lot of expertise and flexibility to meet reviewers’ demands. It was also valuable to gain an understanding of the academic publishing system by experiencing it firsthand.”

From a personal perspective, Sabine said:

“It is an amazing feeling to see this paper published. For me, it represents the journey I have been on and how much I’ve learnt about both academia and events during my time at BU. I am pleased to be able to share my excitement for the exhibition industry with others, who can hopefully use this paper to complement their knowledge and learning. Knowing that this paper may be cited in the future or used by practitioners to inform their circulation management decisions feels surreal but incredibly fulfilling.”

Commenting on the achievement, Dr. Miguel Moital said:

“I am immensely proud of Sabine’s achievement.  Sabine did a great piece of research for her dissertation and when challenged to work with me on turning the dissertation in to a paper, she did not hesitate. She diligently navigated the steps and challenges that come with submitting and revising a paper. It has been a pleasure working with her. Congratulations, Sabine!”

BU supports challenge to help businesses find innovative ways of hosting digital live exhibitions

BU colleagues are cordially invited to encourage staff, current students and alumni to submit ideas to the Exhibition futures Challenge 2020.

Along with Crowd, the Department for International Trade, and Great Britain Campaign, the Department of Sport & Events Management at Bournemouth University is helping Prodigio re-imagine the magic of live exhibitions that are now affected by the global pandemic.

What solution encompasses all the benefits of an exhibition in a virtual environment?

Many events and conferences are being cancelled for 2020 due to mass gatherings, travel, and face-to-face interaction being off limits during the Coronavirus crisis. This has led to a huge loss in business for exhibition experts such as Prodigio, which is why we partnered with Prodigio to support the “How can we Re-imagine the Magic of Exhibitions through the Exhibition Futures Challenge 2020?” initiative.

This challenge is offering businesses a platform to put forward their creative idea, achieve international exposure, win a cash prize of £5,000 together with a further £5,000 investment in the idea, including the support of the teams at Great Britain Campaign and at Department for International Trade [PS: The applicant does not need to be in the UK but the investment money needs to involve a company based in the UK].

Deadline for putting forward the final idea is 1st July. Anyone and everyone, both within and outside of the events industry, is invited to participate. The Challenge microsite created by Crowd will provide more information, as well as:

Dr. Miguel Moital assesses two new course proposals for A3ES

Dr. Miguel Moital, Principal Academic in Events Management within the Department of Events & Leisure, has assessed two new course proposals for the Portuguese Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education – A3ES. In 2018 Miguel was appointed international expert and external examiner for A3ES, the governmental agency validates and re-validates programmes at graduate, postgraduate and Doctoral level.

Each new course validation panel is made up of three academics, one of each is an international expert. Miguel acted as the team leader in one of the validations and team member in the other one.

VC Fusion Prize winner delivers guest lecture to MSc Events students

Events Management student Sabine Toppig delivered a guest lecture via skype to 50 Events Management and Events Marketing Masters students as part of the Contemporary Issues in Events Management (CIEM) unit.

Sabine, who graduated with a first Honours degree, received her diploma as well as the VC Fusion Prize on Tuesday.

Sabine’s presentation was based on her dissertation topic and focused on the techniques, outputs and outcomes of circulation management at exhibitions. One of the challenges Sabine faced during her placement was managing attendee circulation at the exhibition she managed. The topic intrigued her and she set out to research it as part of her dissertation. The detailed and comprehensive model depicting how and why circulation is managed at exhibitions embodies the spirit of fusion, as it can be used for academic, professional practice and educational/training purposes.

 

Back in July Sabine presented her research at the International Conference on Strategic Innovative Marketing and Tourism 2019 in Greece, funded by the Department of Sport & Events Management, and an article co-authored with her supervisor Dr. Miguel Moital is now under review by a leading Events journal.

Commenting on the experience, Sabine said:

It was a great experience presenting a topic which I loved learning about intensively during my placement and my dissertation research to an audience which is as passionate about the events industry as I am. I also enjoyed teaching the students something which I believe they could find useful, should they decide to pursue a career in exhibition management.

Abde Ali, the course rep for events management, shared the student consensus view about the presentation:

The presentation from Sabine was an unexpected aid and a much needed one. Her presentation provided us with a view to managing events that was not much thought about or looked into. She also talked about the experience of doing the dissertation and what was expected from us at our Master’s program, while also highlighting the methods, skills, details and model to help the students during their dissertation. MSc Events would like to thank Sabine for her valuable time and contribution to our learning.”

Sabine did a fantastic dissertation and produced a detailed, visually engaging presentation which the students appreciated very much. Her in-depth understanding of a cutting-edge topic relevant to events management suited the CIEM unit very well. This is an excellent example of fusion and co-creation, and demonstrates how student research can enhance the learning experience at BU.

Delayed rewards for international engagement

It took more than two years to experience the delayed effects of the promotional work I have done during my trip to India for the Global Festival of Learning, 2017.

I attended the festival in Pune and then did an activity in Delhi. My session involved interviewing a MSc Tourism & Events alumni (Arjun Bahl) who co-founded the St+art India project, the largest street art festival in the country.

When I attended the GFoL, I also did promotional work by visiting a number of study abroad agents in Delhi and Mumbai (Thank you IMSRT!). It was great to interact with those who are selling the university, and realise how much information they have about all the different universities across the world, while at the same time how little specific information they have about specific courses offered by BU, such as the tourism, hospitality, sport and events. I found agents to be very appreciative of the valuable information I gave them, which they thought will help them to do a better job at selling BU and these courses in particular.

I also delivered a guest lecture about events experiences to tourism students at Amity University in Mumbai, whose course was lead by an MSc Tourism Management alumni. Even though I was suffering from severe food poisoning, I made all efforts to fulfill the commitment of going to talk at Amity. Not only I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, but tangible benefits to BU materialised this September.

The tourism course had started not long ago and the audience for the guest presentation was small – around 20 students – but extremely interested. One second year student came to talk to me at the end to introduce himself and to show his enthusiasm for the idea of coming BU to do an Events Masters once he graduated. We became friends on Facebook and he contacted me a few times since 2017, asking questions about Bournemouth, BU and the course.

Two and a half years on, not only has Abde Ali joined the MSc Events Management, but he has now been elected course rep and Secretary for Events Society BU. According to Abde, “I kind of knew I wanted to do further studies in a more specific area within tourism, but events never occurred to me before Miguel’s presentation. Miguel’s presentation not only made me realise that events was what I wanted to study, but also that Bournemouth University was the place to do it”.

Abde’s example shows two things: 1) the power of guest lectures and personal interaction in persuading students to come to BU, and 2) the delayed effects of promotional work via guest lectures or the GFoL, in this instance more than two years.

I am delighted by Abde’s decision to join us, and his example just reinforces my view that while the Internet plays an important role, interpersonal interaction with academics can become a decisive influence on the decision to come to BU. After all, academics have a lot of knowledge about the courses they teach and they can talk about them very passionately. Activities like the GFoL can be an effective way of promoting University internationally, and more so if they are maximised through activities like guest lectures and agent visits.

Dr. Miguel Moital reviews for the Croatian Science Foundation

Dr. Miguel Moital, Principal Academic in Events Management in the Department of Sport and Event Management, Faculty of Management, has taken part in the peer review of a project proposal submitted within the ”Installation Research Projects” Call for Proposals, run by The Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ). The members of HRZZ national evaluation panel recommended Miguel as an expert for a project proposal on tourism marketing.

This is the second time Miguel reviews proposals for HRZZ, having assessed a Marie Curie application in the past.

Congratulations to Dr. Miguel Moital

Dr. Moital (Departament of Events & Leisure, FoM) has just published a paper on Corporate Reputation Review (Palgrave) with two Spanish academics Dr. Marta Retamosa and Dr. Angel Millan. The paper focuses on satisfaction in higher education and is the result of a collaboration which started in 2014. You can access the paper here.

In 2015 Miguel spent a month at the University of Castilla la Mancha (UCLM) as part of the university’s visiting academic program, and in 2016 both Marta and Angel spent time at BU.

The CRR paper is the second resulting from the collaboration between Miguel and UCLM academics. In 2015 Miguel and Angel co-authored a paper published in Psychology & Marketing on the segmentation of business travellers.

Conference report (Miguel Moital) – ICOT 2019 in Braga, Porto (Portugal)

I have just returned from Portugal where I attended the International Conference on Tourism – ICOT 2019, hosted by the Portuguese Catholic University – Braga Campus. The conference was co-organised by Konstantinos Andriotis and Carla Cardoso, two academics who hold PhDs from BU. ICOT is the child of Dr. Andriotis, a Professor in Tourism at the Middlesex University London, who has been running the conference for nine years, with previous editions in held in Greece, China, Cyprus, U.K., Italy and Thailand. Besides myself, Carla and Konstantinos, another BU PhD alumni attended the conference (Alexandra Correia from the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo), so we took a picture together.

Under the banner of “Tourism into the new decade: challenges and prospects”, the conference attempted to discuss the implications of the growth of tourism while identifying “future trends and examine various responses with respect to the appropriate policies and management techniques”. A total of 27 parallel sessions encompassing 122 paper presentations, a poster session and two keynote speeches made up the academic element of the conference. The conference attracted over 140 delegates from 30 countries representing nearly 100 universities.

Besides helping the local organising committee, my main involvement was running two special sessions in Portuguese. Although it is an international conference and presentations are usually in English, some Latin American academics do not have the confidence to present English and therefore providing sessions in Portuguese facilitated their participation in an international conference.

The conference took place in Braga, a municipality located one hour away from Porto. The venue was the beautiful Bom Jesus de Braga (Good Jesus of the Mount), a pilgrimage site with a monumental, Baroque stairway that climbs 116 meters. The site, which has this weekend (6 July) been awarded UNESCO’s World Heritage status, features six hotels and a conference/events centre boasting outstanding views over the city of Braga. The shrine is very well maintained and has received substantial investment in the past eight years to support its application to world heritage status. In addition to the Baroque stairway, its landmarks include the church at the top of the stairway, the funicular (inaugurated in 1882, remaining one of the oldest in the world using a system of water counterweights) and the well maintained gardens and forest.

The social programme started with a welcome session and drinks at the premises of the Catholic University attended by the Braga Mayor, the Bishop of Braga and the President of the Porto and North of Portugal Tourist Board.

The second day featured a showcase of regional foods and handicraft, as well as a Cavaquinho performance (The cavaquinho is a small Portuguese guitar with four wire or gut strings).

 

The gala dinner took place in Guimaraes city at the end of the third day. Participants had the chance to enjoy a guided tour across Guimaraes city center, a World Heritage site. The walk ended at the venue for the Gala dinner: the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, whose construction initiated in the XV century. The gala dinner featured Fado (Portuguese traditional singing genre) and Rancho Folclorico (folk dance) performances.

The last day of the conference took place in Porto. The day started with a visit to Palácio da Bolsa, a beautiful building showing an eclectic architectural style influenced by eighteenth century neoclassical style, Tuscany architecture, as well as, English Neo-Palladian style. Dr. Ricardo Valente, Councillor for Tourism and Commerce at Porto city council, welcomed participants before a guided tour of the palace.

 

The day also included visits to other important landmarks , including ‘Caves Sandman’ (one of the famous Port Wine wineries on the south bank of the Douro River) and a river Cruise.
