In November’s SETS seminar, Fátima Portilho, from Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, will present her research on political consumption in Latin America.
Fatima holds a PhD in Social Sciences from UNICAMP (Brazil) and Oxford University (UK). Her research focuses on processes of politicization of consumption and everyday life, food activism, alternative food networks, and social movements.
As a discussant, we will have
Anne Tallontire from Leeds University. Anne is a Professor of Sustainability and Business and her research focuses on corporate social responsibility with respect to development, particularly on ethical and fair trade and the use of private standards in food systems.
Short abstract of Fatima’s talk
Political consumerism takes a different trajectory in Latin America when compared with the northern hemisphere. Reasons include how social movements are driving forces for sustainable consumption. The region has a strong tradition of social movements, and they have incorporated, in some way, political consumerism tools into their action repertoire. Nonetheless, more emphasis is still put on working through the parliamentary arena rather than using the market as an arena for political pressure. The talk will discuss these specificities and the limitations and opportunities for the expansion of political consumerism throughout the continent, with a focus on Brazil.
The seminar is online, on November 9th at 3 pm (UK time)
