Country and Culture Insights: India – 12 December, 9am-10:30am, F109 (Talbot campus)
Country and Culture Insights: Nigeria – 12 December, 10:30am-12pm, F109 (Talbot campus)
These two workshops follow the ‘Cultural awareness and cross-cultural communication‘ workshop on 7 December and provide an opportunity to consider the countries and cultures of India and Nigeria in more detail, with specific examples of lived experience from Indian and Nigerian colleagues, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).
The sessions will take place both online and on campus. Staff are encouraged to attend in person if possible.
The workshop objectives are:
• To enhance understanding of the countries, cultures and education systems that our largest cohorts of international students come from;
• To develop awareness of some specific cultural differences and identify ways in which BU staff can help students from these countries to adjust;
• To highlight individual variations and experiences, alongside generalised cultural “norms”.
The workshop will include:
• A live virtual presentation from the Association of Commonwealth Universities on the Nigerian/Indian student market, education system and culture, plus any other relevant socio-economic factors that impact the student experience;
• Panel discussion featuring Indian/Nigerian participants;
• Open Q&A session on intercultural experiences and communication challenges.
Facilitated by:
Caroline Earth, Orientation and Cultural Adaptation Officer
Jana Kuncova, Head Of International Mobility And Experience
Alastair Morrison, Head of International Partnerships
