Final Call: UKCGE Recognised Research Supervision Programme – Deadline Monday 16 March

The deadline is approaching for BU staff to apply for national accreditation via the UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE) Research Supervisor Recognition Programme

This programme provides a formal mechanism for supervisors to evaluate their practice against the Good Supervisory Practice Framework. To date, over 30 BU supervisors have achieved this recognition, identifying strengths and establishing clear pathways for professional growth.

Key Benefits Include:

Methodological Evaluation: Analyse your supervisory methods and decision-making processes.

National Benchmarking: Map your practice against established UK standards of excellence.

Professional Advancement: Identify clear routes for improvement at both Full and Associate award levels.

Award Level 

The Research Supervisor Recognition Programme offers two levels based on your current experience:

Recognised Supervisor (Full Award): For those who have supported doctoral candidates through to final examination and completion.

Recognised Associate Supervisor (Associate Award): For those who have not yet seen a candidate through to completion, or who supervise in an informal capacity.

1. Reflective Account

Complete a reflective account of your supervisory practice aligned with the Good Supervisory Practice Framework.

2. References and Documentation

To authenticate your account, you must provide the following:

For the Full Award: A reference from a former doctoral candidate AND a reference from a colleague (e.g., a co-supervisor).

For the Associate Award: A reference from a colleague AND a Supervision Observation report.

3. Formal Approval

Along with your application, a formal approval email must be sent from your Associate Dean Research, Innovation and Enterprise directly to researcherdevelopment@bournemouth.ac.uk

Key Information

Peer-reviewed feedback: Applications are reviewed by a two-person panel; you will receive actionable feedback regardless of the outcome.

Fully funded: The Doctoral College covers the full cost of applications for all BU supervisors.

How would you rate your PGRs’ experience at BU? – 1 week to go

We have launched the Bournemouth University Postgraduate Research Experience Survey for Supervisors.

The Advance HE Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) has just closed and 40% of our PGRs provided feedback on their experiences at Bournemouth University.

This year, we are running a parallel survey for supervisors which asks a similar range of questions to PRES to also give supervisors a voice, and to provide balance and/or support to the issues raised by the PGRs.

The survey covers topics including PGR supervision; resources/research culture; progress/assessment; responsibilities; support for PGRs; research skills/personal development; and opportunities/overall experience.

Your experiences will be combined with those of other PGR supervisors to help us to understand the overall picture more clearly from the supervisors’ perspective, and the combined views of PGR supervisors will be considered alongside the views of the PGRs being reported in the PRES. The responses will be analysed and reported as appropriate.

Participation is optional but we would very much appreciate your feedback to help us further review and improve the support available for our PGRs.

Online mental health training resources for PGR students and supervisors

The wellbeing of students and the safeguarding of their mental health is a high priority for universities across the UK.

The HEFCE Catalyst Fund provided £1.5 million for 17 projects across the HE sector to improve support for the mental health and wellbeing of postgraduate research students. Across the sector, the 17 projects developed new practice for pastoral support and training materials for students, supervisors, and other staff.

At Bournemouth University, the Doctoral College collaborated with FHSS and Student Services on a project focussing on supporting PGRs through the transitions from UG/PGT to PGR and between each stages of their research degree.

Durham University focussed on “Online mental health training resources for PGR students and supervisors” and have made their training materials available for all HE institutions. We encourage all parties involved in postgraduate research to undertake the training modules found here.

 

The aims of the training are to:

  • Identify and address mental health needs within the supervisory relationship to promote early intervention
  • Recognise the specific role of supervisors in supporting mental health and wellbeing, and identify the limits of that relationship for resolving wider mental health difficulties
  • Prevent the development or exacerbation of mental health symptoms by identifying the helpful and unhelpful relationship patterns that can emerge in supervision.
