BU Open Access overview

Open access is important for a number of reasons:

  • its increases the visibility and accessibility of research
  • for funder compliance: many funders, including UKRI (and any of its councils), Wellcome, and the NIHR, have open access policies which require in-scope outputs produced from their grant-funded research to be published open access.
  • for REF: to be eligible for submission in REF 2029, journal articles and conference contributions with an ISSN that are published after 1 January 2021 must be made open access.

This page provides an overview of what open access is and how we support researchers at BU to make their outputs open access.
