Featured Student Project Bank partner: Volunteer Centre Dorset

In our second spotlight, Siobhán Davis, Project Coordinator for the Community Credits Scheme, tells us about Volunteer Centre Dorset and the Community Credits Scheme.

The Dorset Volunteer Centre is part of a national network of volunteer centres that help voluntary and community organisations recruit and manage their volunteers, and help people interested in volunteering to find interesting and enjoyable opportunities. The Volunteer Centre Dorset seeks to promote and develop volunteering to all throughout Dorset.

The Community Credits Scheme is focused on people with learning disabilities and supports them to volunteer within their local community by providing a volunteer mentor. In return for volunteering they and their volunteer mentor receive time credit notes which they can exchange for an activity of their choice. This might be learning something from another member of the scheme or buying a session at their local football club, gym or cinema.

People with learning disabilities have been excluded from many organisations in the past and The Community Credit Scheme helps to break down some of those barriers. The Volunteer Centre Dorset successfully piloted The Community Credits Scheme in four towns in Dorset in 2013. They are in the process of extending the scheme to North and East Dorset.

The Community Credits Scheme aims to:

  • Set up volunteering placements for adults with mild learning disabilities and recruit mentors to support them
  • Set up exchange venues in which the credit notes earned for each hour of volunteering can be exchanged
  • Recruit befrienders to support people in exchanging credits if required
  • Support organisations that offer placements
  • Raise positive awareness of people with Learning disabilities.
  • Recruit volunteers throughout Dorset

Why is the Community Credits Scheme so important?

This scheme is paving the way in supporting people with difficulties into volunteering through supported volunteering. The credit scheme is also helping the socially isolated by setting up focus groups and insuring individuals are kept informed about new voluntary placements and events. For each credit a person earns they can exchange it for a health and wellbeing activity. For most of us on a daily basis we find it easy to phone up our mates and go out for the evening. For someone with communication difficulties or travelling difficulties this is huge so we encourage people to live healthier lifestyles, meet new people and step out of their comfort zone. Individuals are learning new skills which are transferrable to the work place. We set up easy, achievable outcomes for individuals to meet which sometimes they have to step out of their comfort zone to achieve. With the support of volunteer mentors/befrienders they can move forward.  For organisations seeking new volunteers this is a huge game changer because support is provided.

 What do you hope to achieve by working with the Student Project Bank?

We are hoping to set up a good working partnership and to include students. We are also looking forward to new ideas being brought forward. We believe that some of Bournemouth University’s students have brilliant skills and knowledge which they could share. This could then be a beacon project in Dorset that we could share with other areas in England. Working with Bournemouth University would be an amazing step forward.

The Civic Media Hub at Bournemouth University is currently working with various housing organisations and groups in London that all record and store data in different ways. These stakeholder partners would like to share their resources more easily. Co-develop a database prototype with the project supervisors and stakeholders from a set of stakeholder’s user stories and a preliminary data infrastructure report.

SPB056: Trans Health Matters research project

Since 2012 the Diversity Trust has been researching the health needs of LGBT+ people and has found evidence to support national findings on trans experiences. To continue this work the Diversity Trust plans to carry out a research project into the specific health needs of trans people across Avon, Swindon and Wiltshire. Assist with data collection and analysis, and contribute to a report and final presentation.

Featured Student Project Bank partner of the week: Help-in

In the first of our weekly spotlights, Richard Hawkesford, CEO of the charity Help-in, tells us more about his organisation and what he hopes to achieve by working with the Student Project Bank.

Help-in will be the first social media platform of its kind: a non-profit social media platform that will connect anyone who needs help to anyone anywhere in the world that is willing to give it. I want to offer the opportunity for BU students to help me build this platform and to become part of the Help-in vision.

I came up with the Help-in idea while I was travelling. I wanted to volunteer as part of my experience but found the internet to be a frustrating place to find opportunities that didn’t cost the Earth. In fact, on talking to others, an overwhelming majority agreed the whole process should be easier.

60% spent 10-50 hours looking online and 15% spent over 50 hours. Some paid large amounts of money with no transparency about where the money went, and a quarter gave up because they found it so time consuming or difficult to find anything online.

I never want anyone to give up when they have good intentions to help others.

When I was able to volunteer I realised it was equally as frustrating for the grassroots good causes I wanted to help. They spend up to half their working week looking for volunteers, funding and other help.

I have faith in humanity, but I don´t always think we’re given the right tools to make the most of our giving nature. This is where the Help-in idea evolved.

I want to live in a world where people are able to ask for help, and be connected to people all over the world that are willing to give it out of love and compassion.

SPB038: Benefits of Assistance Dogs for Children with Autism and Down’s Syndrome

Research and document the benefits an assistance dog can provide to a child with Autism/Down’s Syndrome and provide theories as to why the benefits occur, financial benefits for the NHS, Education Authorities and Social Services. The objectives of the project are to increase understanding of why benefits occur, to document benefits achieved through the provision of an assistance dog, potential financial benefits for local communities and promoting greater understanding and inclusion of Autism and Down’s Syndrome.

‘Powerplay: Psychoanalysis and Political Culture’

We are surrounded by political culture as never before and yet, in some ways have never felt so powerless. The recent Brexit vote ( see: http://bit.ly/EUReferendumAnalysis2016_Jackson-Thorsen-and-Wring_v1) and the victory of Trump in the US Presidential election (US Election Analysis website) have foregrounded the significance of politics as a field of social and cultural contestation, shaped by the dynamics of power, history and material interest, but also by the irrational forces of emotion and processes of unconscious fantasy. In December 2016, the BU Centre for Politics and Media collaborated with the Freud Museum, and the Media and Inner World research network to host a special conference on different aspects of political culture today.

The conference was held at the Anna Freud Centre and the Freud Museum, London and it brought together some renowned figures to look at a broad idea of political culture and psychoanalysis, discussed as history, as a state of mind, as televisual culture and as being linked to political practice. Throughout the course of the day, the conference looked at these different areas, and how those spheres feed into the political imagination and the unconscious processes that shape it.

The day began with organizer, Professor Candida Yates (biog) who in her opening remarks, developed the themes of her recent book, The Play of Political Culture, Emotion and Identity (Palgrave Macmillan) by discussing the psychodynamics of political culture, focusing as a case study on the relationship between shame and the emotional appeal of Donald Trump for voters.

BU Professor Barry Richards (biog) then chaired the first full session of the day with the renowned cultural historian, Professor Eli Zaretsky (biog). He discussed ‘The Three Faces of Political Freud’ and the hisorical influences of psychoanalysis upon political social movements (abstract).

The second presentation was given by Psychoanalyst and Organisational Consultant, Philip Stokoe (biog), who presented a psychoanalytic approach to understanding the states of mind in societies that can produce Brexit and Trump (abstract)

In the afternoon, BU Professor, Iain MacRury (biog) interviewed the acclaimed TV screenplay writer, Andrew Davies (biog), who discussed the experience of writing TV drama House of Cards and its links to the theatre of politics in ‘real life’.

In the final session, Psychotherapist and TV and radio broadcaster, Professor Brett Kahr (biog) interviewed Baroness, Professor Sheila Hollins (biog) about the day to day culture of working as a female politician in the House of Lords. As an Independent member of the House of Lords, she speaks on mental health, disability and press regulation and she spoke in a highly compelling way about the experience of her work in those fields.

The conference was fully booked and the audience was made up of psychotherapists, analysts and academics and PhD students from the fields of politics, history, cultural studies and psychosocial studies. Students from the BU MA in International Political Communication also attended and contributed to the discussions that took place throughout the day.

Description: Create a series of short videos to educate people around addiction and to promote St Swithuns Recovery Course. There will be the opportunity to work with the recovery ministry head, observe the course and to interview some members of the recovery course. These videos will be used as part of a national marketing and promotion campaign.

Suitable for: Undergraduate/ postgraduate

Description: Identify and review existing research on the impact of alcohol consumption on the drinker and others. Identify gaps in the current literature and create a research methodology to address these gaps. Produce a report on your findings.

Description: Create a 6-10 minute video capturing the activities and the voices of the people living on Bourne estate from January-June 2017.  This will be used to demonstrate the success of a six year neighbourhood management project in the area. The film will be shown to the community and local agencies.

Description: Count On Me (a Transition Bournemouth project) is a community carbon-counting campaign designed to promote and encourage sustainable behaviour. Develop an app for iPhone/Android or an online platform that will capture data from Bournemouth residents about their activities that produce carbon savings such as cycling or eating less meat.

Brief description:         Use qualitative or mixed methodologies to gain an understanding of what success looks like for academic women at BU. Data gathered will be used for a publication by the Women’s Academic Network.

 SPB011: Development and creation of Poole Schools Association website

Suitable for:                 Undergraduate/ postgraduate

Brief description:         Develop and create a fully functional website for Poole Schools Association.

How it works

  1. A student chooses a project and contacts the Student Project Bank to request an application form.
  2. We will contact them to discuss their requirements and the requirements of the external organisation. For specific projects or those with a number of applications, the student may be asked to an informal interview.
  3. We may schedule a meeting between the student and external organisation to discuss the project, if applicable.
  4. Once the project has been completed the results are shared with the external organisation. The project may be published as a case study on the Student Project Bank website.

The Supporting Interdisciplinary Working Academics’ Perspective will be provided by – Prof. Alan Lester and Debbie Foy-Everett (Sussex), Jordan Graham and Ehsan Masood (Research Professional) and Christopher Ferguson (Piirus).

Prof. Alan Lester and Debbie Foy-Everett will present their talk entitled ‘Opportunities and challenges of managing internal interdisciplinary research initiatives: Sussex Research’. As director of Interdisciplinary Research at Sussex, together with Professional Services counterpart, Debbie Foy-Everett,  Alan leads a unit within tjheir Research and Enterprise division called Sussex Research, which facilitates interdisciplinary and other kinds of research initiative primarily through internally funded schemes of various kinds.

Jordan Graham and Ehsan Masood will outline the services offered by Research Professional in facilitating interdisciplinary research.

Christopher Ferguson, Piirus Social Media Correspondent, will discuss how to ‘connect and collaborate with researchers worldwide’.

BU is hosting a Interdisciplinary Research HE Sector Day on 21st June 2016, dedicated to exploring the benefits and challenges of interdisciplinary research.

The Academics’ Perspective will be provided by three speakers – Prof. Adele Ladkin (BU), Dr. David Hutchinson (Portsmouth) and Dr. Justine McConnell (TORCH, University of Oxford).

Prof. Adele Ladkin is currently working on a multidisciplinary research project ‘Family Rituals 2.0’ funded by the EPSRC, exploring the evolving nature of family rituals in the digital age and the use of technology to support the work-life balance of mobile workers.

Dr. David Hutchinson recently began a new role as Innovation and Impact Development Manager for the Faculty of Technology at the University of Portsmouth. Until the end of May, he was manager of the University of Portsmouth Environment Network, having joined the University in 2010 to help establish this network. UPEN now represents the skills and expertise of over 250 academics from across the University that relate to Sustainability and Environment.

Dr. Justin McConnell is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at TORCH, working on contemporary African, Caribbean, and ancient Greek poetics. After degrees at Cambridge, Bristol, and London, she was a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at Northwestern University in Chicago, before coming to Oxford as a Leverhulme Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama (APGRD), where she worked on the ‘Performing Epic’ project.

Dr. Louise Mansfield is Deputy Director of the Brunel Centre for Sport, Health and Wellbeing (BC.SHaW) in the College of Health and Life Sciences. Her research focuses on gendered inequalities in sport, physical activity and fitness across the lifespan. The health and well-being aspect of her research dovetails with projects she has managed exploring the physical activity and health legacies of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Dr. Mansfield is also a member of the What Works Centre for Wellbeing research team.
