New report on the state of local news in the UK

Last night at a packed house at Westminster we launched a new report: Mapping changes in local news 2015-2017 More bad news for democracy?

Speakers included Aasma Day, the investigative reporter and lifestyle editor at the Lancashire Post, professor Robert McChesney, Justin Schlosberg from the Media Reform Coalition and NUJ president Tim Dawson.

Published by the Centre for the Study of Journalism, Culture and Community (at Bournemouth University) in collaboration with the National Union of Journalists, the Political Studies Association and the Centre for the Study of Media, Communication and Power (at King’s College London) this report maps recent changes in the state of local news provision in the UK including newspapers, broadcast and digital.

We document how:

▶ The majority of the UK (57.9%) is not served by a local daily newspaper.

▶ 45% of local authority districts are served by a single publisher.

▶ Local daily papers are overwhelmingly located in major urban areas.

▶ 77.1% of local newspaper titles are owned by the big five local newspaper publishers.

▶ Another 418 local journalism jobs have been lost in the last 17 months.

And argue for a range of interventions that could help alleviate the democratic crisis that is emerging through a lack of local journalism in the UK.

This report will interest academics, journalists, activists and policymakers concerned with the state of local news in the the UK.

And tomorrow in parliament, MPs will debate the state of the UK’s local media and an early day motion has been tabled calling for sustainable investment in professional local and regional news provision online, in newspapers and on radio and television.

This year BUDI attended the Annual Dementia Action Alliance meeting hosted in the beautiful Central Hall, Westminster. This meeting brings together a range of dementia stakeholders from around the nation to discuss current challenges faced by those affected by dementia. This year the focus was on access to services through faith organisations and NHS hospitals.

In 2013, 250 nationwide representatives attended this event. This year just over 400 delegates arrived to represent their region and affiliation with dementia. The growing numbers of people attending this national event highlights the ever increasing importance of acknowledging dementia and understanding how this condition will continue to affect the communities in which we live.

The 4^th Dementia Action Alliance annual report has just been published and gives details all of the businesses and organisations who have joined the Dementia Action Alliance, locally and nationally. BUDI is a proud member of the national Dementia Alliance and we continue to strive to meet our national targets to ensure that people with dementia are heard, seen and valued.

Open Lecture: Wednesday 19th September – The Parliamentary Art Collection

Don’t forget that the next ‘Open Lecture’ from the Houses of Parliament will be delivered by Malcolm Hay, Curator of the Parliamentary Art Collection. This free event is open to all higher education staff and students from colleges and universities across the UK.

Taking place Wednesday 19^th September 2012, 11am – 12.30pm, at Portcullis House, Houses of Parliament, Westminster, Malcolm Hay will explore the fine art, sculpture and textiles which make up the Collection and giving a unique insight into its history. The Parliamentary Art Collection is a national collection which documents the history of Parliament and British politics.
