Institute for Studies in Landscapes and Human Evolution (ISLHE): Come and find out more over cake and coffee!!

Are you an archaeologist, computer scientist, ecologist, animator, anthropologist, palaeoanthropologist working in a Professional Service? ….

Or simply interested in landscapes and how they influenced human evolution?

If so why not drop by and find out more about BU’s newly launched Institute for Studies in Landscape and Human Evolution (ISLHE) at 1.30 PM on the 25th March (TAG01).  We would like to invite BU staff to an opportunity to find out more and see how they might get involved over coffee.

ISLHE’s research agenda focuses around the role of landscape process in driving human evolution.  What drove the evolution of our species?  Why did some species of the human family tree become extinct while others did not?  What role did climate change and landscape process in Africa play in guiding this evolution?  These are fundamental questions about our own origins and what drove our evolution.  The research agenda focuses on tackling these questions from a landscape-based perspective integrating a wide range of fields anthropology, archaeology, palaeoanthropology, ecology, remote sensing of modern analogues with both earth and computer science.

Working both in the field and using computer modelling we hope to tackle some of these questions over the next few years.  Another key part of our agenda is to work with computer animators to bring our science alive in the imagination of both scientific and popular audiences.

The next RKEO coffee morning is fast approaching and this session will concentrate on the wonders of the Project Delivery Team within RKEO, its personnel, the work they do and how they can help you.

The Team has three specialist areas:

•Finance
•Outputs
•Governance

These feed into Faculty dedicated teams. So if you want to know more about managing projects, applying for ethics approval, how to use BRIAN, Open Access or anything else Research and Knowledge Exchange focused, please come along and have a chat with us, or just to enjoy a coffee and cake.

GeoNet Launch with climate change event

The fusion funded GeoNet project holds its first event on Tuesday the 3rd of February. The project aims to bring together staff and students from across the university with mutual interests via a series of events, including some lunchtime panel debates and a series of external speakers. GeoNet is very inclusive and anyone with an interest is welcome to come and take part. The events are designed to encourage conversation and interaction, with plenty of audience participation. Our first event is;

A conversation about climate change

Coyne Lecture Theatre

Tues 3rd February, 1-2pm

Come along to the Coyne on the 3rd Feb to join in the first of eleven planned GeoNet events. Join panellists who research the science of climate change and its impacts (John Stewart, Andrew Ford and Pippa Gillingham from the Department of Life and Environmental Sciences) and those who research how best to communicate it (Einar Thorsen, Nathan Farrell and David Fevyer from the Media School) in conversation to find out more about their work. We want this session to be as interactive as possible and there will be lots of opportunities to ask questions and help us as we try to learn from each other.

Tea, coffee and cookies will be provided and all are welcome!

Hello, I’m Dean Eatherton – Project Delivery Officer in RDS

I joined Bournemouth University as a Project Delivery Officer in August 2014. I provide professional support and advice to academic colleagues on externally funded research and knowledge exchange grant activity.

Prior to this I worked as a project manager and  policy adviser in the public sector, then moved into the product management environment in the private sector.

An esoteric long-term personal interest I have is that of self improvement through the study of oriental martial arts.
