BA ECRN: Leadership & Advancement Programme

The British Academy Early Career Researcher Network (BA ECRN) are offering ECRs in the BA ECRN the opportunity to take part in a FREE leadership course next year – Leadership and Advancement SHAPE Programme.  It is a

  • 3-year pilot programme, funded by Wellcome, builds on ECRN
  • Designed to support ECRs at all career stages with tools to strengthen leadership & management skills within academia & research environments

Leadership Stream

  • March – June free course for 62 participants (ECRN + Wellcome) per year
  • Equipping ECRs with management and leadership skills through training, mentoring, coaching & networking. Format: mix in-person & online.
  • Applications open August, notified Dec, induction meeting Feb

Advancement Programme – delivered by & supplements existing ECRN

  • from October 2025, series of free workshops, training sessions, networking events focused on career planning, publishing, EDI, international collaboration & more.

Free workshop – Data management basics: Ethical and legal issues in data sharing

Data management is essential to make sure that well-organised, well-documented, high quality and shareable research data can be produced from our research projects.

The free introductory workshops on data management basics are intended for researchers and anyone who wants to learn about research data management.

The first session, scheduled for 4th May 10am – 11.30am: Introduction to data management and sharing, provides an overview of how to manage, document and store research data. This second session focuses on the ethical and legal aspects of data management.

In this free 90-minute online workshop, participants will learn about the relevant legislation, such as data protection legislation and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Participants will also learn about strategies that enable them to share research data. This includes carrying out an assessment of disclosure risk, obtaining informed consent, anonymising data and regulating access to enable data to be shared.

There will be time at the end for questions and discussion.

This event is part of our UK Data Service introductory training series: Spring 2023.

Good Clinical Practice refresher – Tuesday 8th October

Are you currently undertaking research within the NHS, and your Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training is due to expire? Or has it expired recently?

GCP certification lasts for two years, so if your training is due to expire, has expired, or you want to validate your learning, then take advantage of the upcoming refresher half day session, taking place at Royal Bournemouth Hospital on Tuesday 8th October, 8:30am – 11:30am.

The research and knowledge exchange (RKE) development framework offers a range of opportunities for academics at all career stages to develop their skills, knowledge and capabilities in relation to research and knowledge exchange. The pre-award pathway offers all of the starting information required by academics and researchers at BU to undertake research bidding.

This session will explore how best to adapt research in response to the changing external environment. The workshop will provide information on the best routes to funding based upon career stages and also introduce how RKEO can help.

Pre-award finance

This session will introduce researchers to Full Economic Costs (fEC), transparant approaches to costing (TRAC) and the BU Financial Regulations. Guidance will be offered on how to cost projects in a way that funders will find acceptable. Training will be provided on producing the ‘Justificaton of Resources’ document required by many funders.

This workshop will provide a short introduction/refresher on how to apply for external funding at BU. The latest update on the policies and processes will be introduced as part of this short session.
