  • The AHRC are running an International placement scheme providing funded research fellowships at leading international research institutions.  The maximum award is unspecified, Closing date is 15 Jan 14.
  • The AHRC are offering Collaborative research grants in partnership with the São Paulo Research Foundation enabling transnational British and Brazilian teams to apply for funding for collaborative research projects. This is an open call with no set deadline.  The proposal total should not exceed £2 million.
  • The BBSRC are offering Modular training partnerships  designed to help develop master’s-level training in areas of significant need for industrial sectors. The award maximum is unspecified with a closing date of 28 Jan 14.
  • The BBSRC invite proposals for their Welfare of managed animals strategic priority area.  The maximum award is not specified, closing date: 09 Jan 14.
  • The BBSRC are offering funding for the Animal health research club.  The club’s research focuses on improving the resistance of farmed animals. A maximum of £5.5 million is available to support a variety of projects at 80% full economic cost.  Projects usually last 3 -4 years but funding of up to £2m for a maximum of 5 years will be considered. Closing date: 11 Dec 13.
  • The EPSRC ICT pioneers competition is now open,  providing recognition for UK PhD students who can communicate and demonstrate the excellence and exploitation potential of their research.  There are four prizes of £2000 each are available.  Closing date is 04 Dec 13.
  • The fourth call from CHIST-ERA is now open from ERA-Net CHIST-ERA.  Proposals for this call should be transformative and highly multidisciplinary research projects in ICST. The indicative budget is approximately €11.6 million, closing date 21 Jan 14.
  • EUREKA’s Eurostars programme  is supporting SME’s using research to gain competitive advantage.  Funding is provided on a country by country bases with an average project budget of €1.4 million.  The maximum award is unspecified with a closing date of 13 Mar 14.
  • The MRC are offering UK-Japan collaborative proposals, specifically looking at neuroscience disease challenges and the use of next generation opitical microscopy technologies.  The maximum MRC contribution will not be more that £120,000 over three years.  Closing date 05 Dec 13.
  • The MRC are offering a  Senior non-clinical fellowship  providing non-clinical researchers opportunities to become research leaders. The maximum award is not specified and the closing date is 30 Apr 14.
  • The MRC are awarding funds in Stratified medicine to support investigator-led methodological research into the challenges raised by stratifying patient groups. Over the next 4 years, £60 million will be committed to this area of research. Maximum award is not specified, closing date: 23 Jan 14.
  • The Royal Society of Edinburgh are offering Scottish Enterprise/RSE enterprise fellowships to encourage the development of a new Scottish businesses based around a technological idea.  Fellowships cover the fellow’s salary for one year.  There is no maximum award and it will close 28 Nov 13.
  • The Royal Society are offering funds to run small three-day South Africa-UK scientific seminars to bring together groups of early- to mid-career scientists from South Africa and the UK.  Grants are worth up to £12,000 to be used to cover costs of international airfares for up to 5 scientists, local travel costs, accommodation and organisational support.  Award maximum is £12,000, closing 18 Feb 14.
  • The TSB are offering Infrastructure for offshore renewables.  Funds will be given to collaborative, business led projects looking to reduce costs associated with offshore wind, wave and tidal stream energy generation through technology.  Registration closes 29 Jan 14 with a final submission date 05 Feb 2014 .
  •  Improving cell and tissue analysis for stratified medicine.  The TSB seek development of innovative technologies to enhance cell and tissue sample analysis.  Projects should be between £200,000 and £1.5 million and last up to three years.  Award maximum not specified, closing date: 04 Dec 13.
  • The Wellcome Trust are offering Doctoral studentships in medical humanities.  The award will cover stipend, conference travel, research expenses, overseas fieldwork, and university and college fees for up to 3 years.    Maximum award unspecified, closing date: 02 Apr 14.
  • The Wellcome Trust People Awards support projects to explore the impact of biomedical science on society, its historical roots, effects on different cultures, or the ethical questions that it raises. Up to £30,000 is available per project.  Closing date: 31 Jan 14.
  • Wellcome Trust are offering Capital funding for learned societies. This scheme provides funding, usually for up to £200,000, to projects that support the scholarly activities of learned societies. There is no specified deadline or maximum award.
  • Society and ethics doctoral studentships are available from the Wellcome Trust to enable scholars to undertake full-time research on a topic related to the ethics and society programme.  Maximum award is not specified, closing date: 02 Apr 14.
  • Research training fellowships are available from the Wellcome Trust to support medical, dental, veterinary or clinical psychology graduates who have limited research training, but who wish to develop a career in academic medicine. Award amount maximum not specified. Closing date is 07 Feb 14.
  • Society and ethics small grants are available from the Wellcome Trust to  support small-scale research projects, scoping exercises or meetings whose subject matter falls within the remit of the ethics and society programme. The maximum grant is £5,000. There is no closing deadline.

Funding opportunities, Fusion

The Staff Mobility and Networking strand (SMN) of the FIF may seem like your normal, everyday standard strand but look carefully and you’ll see it’s a strand with a difference. It has 2 elements meaning even more opportunities for you! Not only is there a Standard element which includes Santander, but there is also an Erasmus Staff Mobility element too!

This strand provides support in the form of subsistence and travel costs and for staff to:

  • Travel within the UK or overseas with respect to development of projects linked to research, education, professional practice or any combination thereof.  Particular focus will be placed on the creation of sustainable collaborative networks of academics or professionals linked to specific outputs or partnership developments.
  • Travel within the UK or overseas for academic conferences, where one or more oral presentation is being presented and there is clear evidence of additional institutional value in terms of network creation or partnership development. 
  • Travel to at least one university from the the UK Santander Universities Network or one of the Overseas Santander Partner Universities with respect to development of projects linked to research, education, practice or any combination thereof. Please see the following for a list of participating institutions
  • Travel overseas in order to develop academic partnerships or lasting collaborative ventures around research, education and/or practice. 
  • Undertake a programme of mobility and/or networking across a series of linked trips or visits which are inter-disciplinary, especially where they are clearly linked to the BU Research Themes or involve student and staff participation. 
  • Travel in support of a Study Leave application.
  • Invite external partners to visit the University. For example, this might include inviting academics from other institutions or professionals from businesses to visit BU to develop projects and/or co-convening or facilitation of an international workshop.

Bournemouth-Birmingham-Brasilia: Consortium Building and Joint Work (BBB).

Dr Raian Ali, a Senior Lecturer in Computing, is the Principal Investigator of the BBB project which creates a community of interest involving the computing groups of the University of Brasilia, University of Birmingham, and Bournemouth University. The three groups are focused on Software Engineering research and this timely research project focuses on adaptive software systems, particularly, cloud and service computing. Exchange visits as part of this project have encouraged partnership development and international collaborative working. 

  Archaeology Professional Practice Forum: Bridging the Gap

The ‘Bridging the Gap’ project has been a highly successful networking and information gathering exercise, which will inform and drive actions to better prepare students for careers within archaeology, to better meet the needs of the profession and to enhance both subject-specific employability and transferable skills. An Archaeological Professional Practice Forum event was held to gather information from archaeology practitioners, employers, recent graduates and current students on the nature and extent of the skills gap between graduation and entry-level employment within archaeology. It explored ways to improve the industry-readiness of our students in order to give our new graduates a competitive edge when seeking employment, and to service the needs of the profession.

NRG Future Foresight Workshop with Sue Thomas

BU research

Dr Sue Thomas was recently appointed as a Visiting Fellow in The Media School. She was formerly Professor of New Media at De Montfort University, where she established a Transdisciplinary Common Room with an emphasis on Future Foresight.  Sue works closely with members of the university’s Narrative Research Group and we are delighted that she has agreed to host this event, which will take place on Wednesday 13 November at 2p.m in CG09.  Full details of the workshop appear below. How to think about the future in order to attract funding now. With examples drawn from nature and technology.

Academics are expert in the history of their discipline, but what about its future? For example, do you know how to use your expert knowledge of, say, the history of media, to predict the media landscape of 2025 or even 3025?

This session is in two parts:

1. A brief overview of my own work on nature and technology (see ‘Technobiophilia: nature and cyberspace’, Bloomsbury, 2013) and research questions arising from it. I’m interested in working with BU colleagues on developing grant applications in this area, perhaps in fields such as the future of video games, well-being, and tourism.

2. A practical workshop on the skills of Future Foresight – what it is and how to do it. The workshop is designed to stimulate ideas for ways to apply Future Foresight to your own subject area with a view to devising grant applications.

Funding opportunities, Fusion

The Study Leave strand (SL) has three sub-strands: Academic Study Leave, Internal Secondments and Industrial Staff Placements.

  • Academic Study Leave This is to provide academic staff with a period of paid academic study leave, normally up to six months in duration, for the purposes of undertaking research, educational development (eg. the development of teaching programmes) or professional practice.  There must a clear benefit to both the individual and to BU and the stakeholder benefits with respect to Fusion should be clear. 
  • Internal Secondments:  In order to drive interdisciplinary research at BU a limited programme of internal secondments is available.  Secondments may last up to a maximum of six months.  A secondment application must be agreed between the host and the applicant with both parties contributing to the submission.  Cases will be judged on merit in terms of the collaborative output(s) that they will deliver which might include but are not restricted to: (1) completion of an interdisciplinary book or publication programme; (2) submission of a major research grant; (3) curriculum or pedagogic development; and (4) completion of a period of professional practice or knowledge exchange project. 
  • Industrial Staff Placements:  Staff have the opportunity to arrange their own placements with local and regional businesses/organisations for between two and six months.

Engaging students in industry and updating professional practice

Associate Senior Lecturer, Sue Sudbury worked with Sequoia Films, which was commissioned by Channel 4 to develop an idea for their flagship documentary strand Cutting Edge and also to develop and produce an international feature-length documentary, Indian Spacemen, for BBC Storyville. Sue took ten BU students on broadcast production work experience while at the same time updating her professional practice.

 Understanding the co-creation of leisure behaviour in socio-natural environments

Dr Dorothy Fox, a Lecturer in the School of Tourism, undertook research practice with the aim of bringing new ways of thinking about the natural environment into the academic and public arena. This was achieved through primary research carried out in the UK; overseas travel to Australia and New Caledonia (in the South Pacific); the initiation of international networking; undertaking training and the development of new teaching materials for 2013-14.

Dr Fox said: “The process of applying for study leave and its execution has had a profound impact on my way of thinking about my role at BU. This has led to a change from a local perspective to an international one.”

The Co-creation and Co-Production strand supports activity that embraces as many of the following as possible:

  •  Demonstrates a clear, fundamental and innovative contribution to Fusion benefitting staff and students within BU. Benefits to students could include both direct and indirect benefits.
  • Requires pump-priming to initiate activity which will then become sustainable.
  • Delivers a series of clear, measurable and tangible outputs that deliver benefits beyond the team applying.
  • Presents new, innovative projects or initiatives that are likely to have both reach and significance within and beyond BU and where possible involve inter-disciplinary collaboration.
  • Leads to public engagement with a range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates good value for money in terms of return on investment and strategic priorities.

  Duration of the activities can be between 6 and 12 months. Awards made will be between £2k and £75k.

Centre for Face Processing Disorders at BU

Dr Sarah Bate from the Psychology Research Centre was awarded funds from this strand to develop a Centre for Face Processing Disorders at BU.  Sarah’s work explored the cognitive presentation and treatment of face processing deficits in adults and children with a range of neuropsychological conditions, such as developmental or acquired prosopagnosia (face blindness), autistic spectrum disorder, and Moebius syndrome.

Martin is a specialist in writing and supporting research grant applications and tenders, as well as providing administrative and management support services for ongoing projects.

The following opportunities have been announced. Please follow the links for more information:

  • As part of the RCUK Global Uncertainties Programme, the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) wish to commission new, multi-disciplinary and innovative research projects to develop greater understanding of how questions of ethics and rights play out in a security environment, with a focus on governance. The total investment for this Call is £2 million – £2.5 million. A Town Hall meeting is scheduled for 23/09/13. Closing date: 21/10/13
  • The ESRC are offering c. 50 Training Bursaries to improve the standards of research methods and to stimulate the uptake of high quality training courses in research methods across the UK social science community. Bursaries are up to £1,000.
  • A three month secondment opportunity to the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) is open to EPSRC funded PhD students. Closing date: 04/10/13

  • The Royal Society is also offering University Research Fellowships. There are c.35 fellowships are available with a length of tenure of five years in the first instance, which may be extended for a further three years. Closing date: 17/09/13
  • The Technology Strategy Board is offering funding to support Unlocking the Hydrocarbon Energy Market. The aim of this competition is to support business-led innovation that leads to supply chain opportunities for hydrogen energy technologies and that addresses key market barriers to the use of hydrogen as an energy vector. The total cost of projects is expected to range in size from £250k to £1m. A briefing event for potential applicants will be held on 23/09/13. Applicants must register by noon on 23/10/13 and the deadline for expressions of interest is at noon on 30/10/13. 
  • The Wellcome Trust is inviting applications to their Postdoctoral Research Training Fellowships for Clinicians. The total cost of a Fellowship would not normally exceed £350 000. Closing date: 15/11/13

  • The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) and Medical Research Council (MRC) are establishing a £25M UK Regenerative Medicine Platform. Stage 1 – Research Hubs. Closing date: 01/10/13. Stage 2 – Research Consortia. Closing date: 18/09/13
  •  The NHS NIHR has issued a call for proposals to the Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation Programme concerning diseases of the skin, chronic pain and sarcopaenia and its effects on older people. Closing date: 01/10/13 
  • The Technology Strategy Board is investing up to £8m in collaborative research and development via the Technology-inspired innovation call. Awards up to £500,000. Registration by 25/09/13 and Expressions of interest are to be submitted by 25/09/13 
  • The Technology Strategy Board and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) are to invest up to £4m in  feasibility studies which use environmental data to develop new solutions to business problems. A briefing webinar for potential applicants will be held on 8 October 2013. Awards up to £200,000. Closing date: 06/11/13 
  • This Technology Strategy Board and Medical Research Council Biomedical catalyst programme offers early and late stage funding to innovative small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) and researchers to develop solutions to healthcare challenges.  Maximum grant is £250,000. Registration closing date: 02//10/13 and closing date for applications: 09/10/13. A feasibility call is forthcoming later in 2013
  •  The Wellcome Trust is offering Research Fellowships to medical, dental and veterinary graduates. Closing date: 20/09/13 
  • The Wellcome Trust, through the Master’s Award is offering scholars the opportunity to undertake basic training in research and methods through a one-year Master’s course in the History of Medicine or Medical Humanities. Strong preference is given to applicants intending to make a long-term academic career in the subject. Closing date: 01/05/14

  • The EPSRC Digital Economy Theme wishes to encourage user-driven research in the emerging area of Internet of Things. Closing date: 24/10/13
  • There is call for Expressions of Interests for the EPSRC / Jaguar Land Rover Programme for Simulation Innovation. Maximum award £1m. Closing date: 27/08/13
  • The EPSRC, through the RCUK Digital Economy Theme (DET),  invites academics to enter the Telling Tales of Engagement competition. Maximum award £10,000. Closing date: 10/10/13
  • ESRC has announced the third call for proposals for their early careers scheme, Future Research Leaders which supports outstanding early career researchers to carry out excellent research and to develop all aspects of their research and knowledge exchange skills. Maximum award £312,500. Closing date: 24/10/13
  • Nesta is supporting arts projects across Wales with its Digital Research and Development Fund. Closing date: 09/09/13
  • NERC invites proposals for its call for NERC PURE associates to transfer knowledge in the field of Probability, Uncertainty & Risk in the Environment. Closing date: 30/09/13
  • People Awards and Society Awards from The Wellcome Trust, support projects that enable the public to explore biomedical science, its impact on society and culture, its historical roots and the ethical questions that it raises. Closing date 04/10/13
  •  The Wellcome Trust has a scheme for postdoctoral scientists who have recently decided to recommence a scientific research career after a continuous break of at least two years. The Career Re-entry Fellowships are particularly suitable for applicants wishing to return to research after a break for family commitments. Closing date: 27/09/13
  • The Wellcome Trust Sir Henry Wellcome Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for the most promising newly qualified postdoctoral researchers to make an early start in developing their independent research careers, working in the best laboratories in the UK and overseas. Maximum award £250,000. Closing date: 27/10/13

  • The Academy of Medical Sciences is supporting starter grants for clinical lecturers up to £30,000. Closing date 11/09/13
  • The AHRC is inviting proposals for projects to explore Big Data from an Arts and Humanities perspective. Funding for either smaller projects of up to £100k, or larger projects of up to £600k is available on a fEC basis, with the AHRC meeting around 80% of the fEC.  Closing date: 12/09/13
  • BBSRC has a call for the Support for development of bioinformatics tools and computational approaches to the biosciences. It is anticipated that successful grants will not exceed £150k. Closing date: 10/09/13
  • Nominations for BBSRC-funded researchers are now open. Closing date: 06/11/13
  • BBSRC is supporting professional internships for PhD students. Closing date: 05/08/13
  • BBSRC Policy Internships for BBSRC and NERC funded PhD students are available. Closing date: 09/09/13
  • Big Data consortium call from The Digital R&D Fund for the Arts. Applications invited for no more than £300k. Closing date:  13/09/13
  • Digital R&D Fund for the Arts Research+ call  provides an opportunity for existing projects, or projects that are due to start very soon, that are NOT funded through the Digital R&D Fund for the Arts, to apply for a grant to support a researcher to work on the project. Applications are invited up to a limit of £50,000. Rolling closing date to end December 2013
  • EPSRC – high-voltage direct current (HVDC) networks for offshore grid. Closing date: 24/09/13
  • Manufacturing the Future Challenge call from the EPSRC – up to £5m allocated and no closing date
  • ESRC – invites expressions of interest for the establishment of its Social Science of the Nexus network plus. Town meeting – 02/09/13 then deadline for Expression of Interest – 03/10/13
  • ESRC – appointment of a DEGRP research strategy group. Closing date: 05/09/13
  •  The Urgency Grants Mechanism is a pilot launched by ESRC, on behalf of RCUK, is to enable a response to urgent or unforeseen events (for example the August 2011 UK riots), where there is a strong case for immediate research. Provide grants for up to 24 months of work, to a maximum amount of £200,000 (100% fEC) of ESRC funding. Closing date: Not given.
  • IC Tomorrow has launched the Digital Innovation Contest – Sport. Awards up to £25,000. Closing date: 14/08/13
  • JPI Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change and the Belmont Forum are inviting  proposals for their food security and land use change call. Funding of up to 3m Euros. Closing date: 30/09/13
  • MRC-funded senior clinical fellowship at Harwell. Closing date: 09/04/14
  • The National Science Foundation has a call – ecology and evolution of infectious diseases programme. Award amount not given. Closing date: 20/11/13
  • NERC invites applications for its postgraduate skills development awards. Total budget for the scheme is £1m. Closing date:  30/08/13
  • NERC invites applications for its Arctic research station programme. Closing date: 31/03/14
  • The Royal Society invites applications for its research professorships. The scheme provides salary costs, a one-off start-up grant and research expenses. Appointments are usually made for up to 10 years. Closing date: 13/03/14
  • The Technology Strategy Board is to invest up to £10m in highly innovative collaborative R&D projects in the field of low carbon vehicles, closely aligned with the aims of the newly announced Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) and the joint government and industry automotive sector industrial strategy. Registration closing date: 06/11/13 and submission closing date: 13/11/13
  • The Technology Strategy Board is to invest up to £1.5m in collaborative research and development (CR&D) to encourage companies to rethink the design of products, components and/or services, with the potential to reduce their environmental impact by a factor of four in the Design Challenges for a Circular Economy call. Closing date: 04/09/13
  • The Technology Strategy Board is to invest up to £2.5m in feasibility and collaborative R&D projects to encourage the development and commercialisation of innovative processes that will generate high-value chemical products through industrial biotechnology and bio-refining through its Sustainable High-value Chemical Manufacture through Industrial Biotechnology 2 – Technical Feasibility call. Closing date: 16/10/13
  • The Wellcome Trust invites proposals for its cross-disciplinary Sustaining Health call. This call supports small awards in the order of £250,000 (exceptionally up to £500,000) for up to two years. Closing date for concept notes: 27/08/13
  • The Wellcome Trust is also supporting the Senior Investigator Awards. Awards are worth up to £425k per year and for any duration of up to seven years. Closing date: 22/11/13 (future rounds are available)
  • The Wellcome Trust – Strategic Awards. These provide flexible forms of support to excellent research groups with outstanding track records in their field. The support available can be tailored to the needs of individual groups with agreement from the Trust and might be justified in terms of the added value they will provide. Closing date: rolling deadline
  • The Wellcome Trust invites proposals for its intermediate fellowships for researchers in India. The total award for an Intermediate Fellowship typically amounts to INR 3.5 Crores. Preliminary application deadline: 26/8/13 and invited full application deadline: November/December 2013
  • The Wellcome Trust is providing support for new investigator awards in biomedical science. An award can be worth anything up to £425k per year and for any duration up to a maximum of seven years. Closing date: 22/11/13
  • Wellcome Trust–Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Postdoctoral Fellowships. Closing date 22/11/13

The current call for applications to all strands of the Fusion Investment Fund  has now closed. For those of you who have missed out this time, fear not! There will be another chance to apply later this year when we open the next call in October. Watch this space for details!
