Human navigation: a cognitive neuroscience approach

This year we have a week long programme of lectures, demonstrations, discussions and a film, which will showcase the fantastic research which is being undertaken at the university.

This is the sixth in a series of blog posts which will highlight the events you can join throughout the week. The sixth event of the programme will take place on Wednesday 13^th May, Dr Angela Gosling & Dr Jan Wiener the ability to navigate within complex and rapidly changing environments is a crucial skill humans possess and one that most of us take for granted. Recent reports suggest that increasing numbers of people have deficits to core navigation abilities; current estimates suggest 6 million people in EU countries, a number expected to rise in coming years. Research currently underway in the Navigation Lab at Bournemouth University is aimed at addressing some of the current issues in human navigation. Our novel research focus makes use of state-of-the art eye-tracking and electrical neuroimaging technology to investigate neural and cognitive functions in virtual navigation environments.

This year we have a week long programme of lectures, demonstrations, discussions and a film, which will showcase the fantastic research which is being undertaken at the university.

This is the fifth in a series of blog posts which will highlight the events you can join throughout the week. The fifth event of the programme will take place on Wednesday 13^th May,Dr Ann Hemingway will be discussing how a continuing challenge is to understand how the intricate range of drivers affect the food intake of teenagers and older people the two groups in society who have the lowest vegetable intake across the lifespan. Research led by BU and being undertaken across Europe is trying to tackle this challenge, the learning from this cross disciplinary work and the intended and actual outcomes of the research so far will be discussed.

The nature of the marketplace is constantly changing. Exponential growth of the internet and rapid evolution of technology has created new ways of communicating and ‘doing business’. This means that organisations, especially those without their own research capacity, may struggle to keep up as multiple media touch points develop, become ‘on trend’, then rapidly fade. The need to ‘bring science to the market’ has never been more pressing to help understand the modern consumer. This session will highlight how the Consumer Research Group may provide the integrated multi-dimensional approach to consumer research that is required in business today through interactive discussion and illustrative case examples.

Who needs Dimbleby? Media Faculty hosts live election coverage tonight from 10pm

With the polls open in the most exciting General Election in recent history, we invite you to follow events with our ‘live’ coverage online, on TV and Radio, as well as on Twitter and Facebook.We are streaming our TV coverage to the website and it will be broadcast around BU from 10pm tonight until 10am on May 8th. Radio coverage will also be ‘live’ on Hope FM from 10pm and we are covering all the Dorset counts alongside reporters and photographers from The Daily Echo. Meridian will be taking our TV reports.
We have a team at Westminster and our own focus group of student voters who were ‘undecided’ will be joining us, there is comedy from our own Comedy Coalition and we will have a constant flow of guests — pundits and politicians – in the studio with us on the night to bring us analysis and insights as the story unfolds.

This is an impressive cross-Faculty student-led collaborative project, involving students from journalism, animation, PR, politics, advertising, marketing, communication and English. We are also linking up with students engaged in a similar activity around the country, in conjunction with the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC).

Taking a good long look at genocide victims from space

This is the third in a series of blog posts which will highlight the events you can join throughout the week. The third event of the programme will take place on Tuesday 12th May, Andy Ford will be looking at ‘Taking a good long look at genocide victims from space.’

Locating clandestine mass-graves resulting from genocide is time consuming and problematic. For instance, some 3000 victims of the genocide in Bosnia (1992-95) are still missing. Locating graves is imperative for repatriating remains to families and for gathering evidence for war crimes tribunals. Forensic Scientists conventionally use a combination of local knowledge and opportune satellite snapshots in their search. We present a new, novel technique based on a time- series of satellite images long after burial took place, which is normally used by geographers to monitor the impact of climate change on vegetation around the world.

The second event of the programme will take place on Tuesday 12^th May, Dr Avital Biran, Dr Melanie Klinkner, Dr Stephanie Schwandner-Sievers & Dr Feng Tian will be discussing ‘Transforming conflict after war: memory, heritage and digital media’

In divided societies emerging from war, monuments communicate important memories, shared grief, pride or solidarity, but they can also signify partisan claims to territory, moral and military superiority, and perpetuate militant attitudes. They are of social, cultural, psychological, economic, political, international and educational significance. But how do consumption and perception change over time? Could visitors be engaged by digital media technologies to experience the plurality of memories and develop empathy and recognition of the cultural heritage of war beyond one- sided narratives? This interdisciplinary session will canvas some of the variables and challenges associated with the gamification of contested heritage sites.

Dementia: improving the lives of people affected by dementia in Dorset

Join us to celebrate the breadth and excellence of Bournemouth University’s research as part of Interdisciplinary Research Week this May. This is an opportunity to spark new collaborations and ideas among our diverse research community.

This year we have a week long programme of lectures, demonstrations, discussions and a film, which will showcase the fantastic research which is being undertaken at the university.

This is the first in a series of blog posts which will highlight the events you can join throughout the week. The first event of the programme will take place on Monday 11^th May, Professor Anthea Innes will be discussing ‘Dementia: improving the lives of people affected by dementia in Dorset’.

This two-hour interactive session will showcase a range of initiatives that members of the Bournemouth University Dementia Institute (BUDI) are working on in collaboration with our community partners. This includes working with a local school where pupils and people with dementia have been learning to use gaming technology like the Wii and Xbox to play together, and the BUDI orchestra, collaboration with professional Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra musicians.

International Day of the Midwife, Edinburgh 2015

The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has organised a conference today to celebrate the International Day of the Midwife in Edinburgh. The conference ‘Midwives for a Better Tomorrow’ has a very international focus. Speakers include: Frances Day-Stirk, president of the International Confederation of Midwives, Mary Renfrew, who led The Lancet series on midwifery, and Frances McConville from the World Health Organization. The conference also reported on the RCM Global Midwifery Twinning Project, which was funded by THET and included three low-income countries: Nepal, Cambodia & Uganda. In attandance was BU Visiting Faculty (and Poole midwife) Ms. Jillian Ireland, who was one of the volunteers who went out to Nepal.

This year’s International Day of the Midwife conference co-incides with the centenary of the 1915 Midwives (Scotland) Act. This celebration reminds us of the importance to have government recognition and regulation for the profession of midwifery. The latter is still lacking in many low-income countries, such as Nepal. There is a large body of evidence which supports that skilled midwifery care has the potential to significantly reduce maternal and child mortality and increase wellbeing.

14:Live will be returning this Thursday 7th May 14:00-14:45 at the same location, Poole House Refectory, next to papa johns. This is open to all staff and students and I am pleased to welcome Dr Lauren Kita, a Psychologist and Yoga / Mindfulness Therapist.

Exploring the science behind the mind-body connection to empower you with ways of managing everyday stress

Many of us spend the majority of our lives living on ‘autopilot,’ unaware of the constant cycle of thoughts running through our minds. However, the way that we think has a direct influence on how we feel. When we experience stress our brain responds by putting our body into a state of hyperalertness, also know as the ‘fight or flight’ response. This triggers a cascade of stress hormones into our system which produces classic symptoms of anxiety. This is an evolutionary mechanism that helps us to avoid potential dangers. Yet in our modern world, the stressors that we experiences are usually less to do with life or death situations, and more to do with everyday pressures and worries; however this same response occurs. Chronic stress has deleterious effects, impacting almost every physical and mental health condition. High levels of stress can also make it difficult for us to perform under high pressure situations, such as exams. In this talk we will discuss the science behind the mind-body connection, and you will be introduced to simple techniques (such as mindfulness and breathing exercises) that can help you to better manage your stress.

Are you interested in joining the public engagement team in Poole town centre on 30th May?

With the Festival of Learning two months away, our On-Tour programmes are well underway. In May of this year we have an opportunity for you to get involved in running a public engagement activity for the general public.

What are the benefits from being involved in the Festival of Learning on tour?

Running an activity as part of the on-tour programme will enable anyone who’s new to public engagement to gain confidence in communicating research to the public, as well as providing a fresh perspective on research from audience members with differing levels of knowledge and understanding. Most of all … it will be great fun!

What kind of activity could I run?

In the past we have had very successful activities which have engaged the public and created a great atmosphere when taking the Festival of Learning On-Tour. The first example is an activity run by Marine Archaeology, who brought artefacts and wrecks from their dives; this included full size cannon (which was very popular with the younger generation). A second example is painting fossils as an activity; this had a great appeal to families as the activity provided a hands-on experience. We also encourage Post Graduate students to run activities around their research, an example of this was an activity which looked into our DNA and provided a quiz to test what participants had learnt.

GeoNet Human/Wildlife Conflict

For our most recent GeoNet event we were lucky enough to have a visit from Gaius Wilson all the way from Southern India. Gaius told us about his PhD research into elephant behaviour. Apparently there are 12-15,000 elephants in Southern India, and they commonly come into conflict with humans. Farmers try to protect their crops with deep ditches (elephants can’t jump!) and electric fences. However, elephants are clever, and have realised that their tusks don’t conduct electricity, so the males (females don’t have tusks) push over fences or use trees to break them. An emerging problem is the spread of a weed called Lantana, which was introduced from South America as an ornamental hedge plant. Lantana forms very high, dense stands which elephants can’t cross. It takes up space and so there is a loss of fodder, since elephants don’t eat Lantana, and the plant contains oils and can lead to more intense forest fires. This pushes elephants closer to villages to find food, and means that locals with captive working elephants have to travel further to find food. One thing the forest department can do to stop elephants being forced to use farmer’s resources is to remove Lantana where it appears. Employing villagers to do this could create work opportunities, with associated economic benefits.

After Gaius’ talk we had an interesting discussion (joined by Susanna Curtin and Mandy Korstjens) about the potential for wildlife tourism to mitigate human/wildlife conflict. The idea is that if farmers have another income stream provided by tourists, it becomes in their interest to protect the animals that the tourists pay to see. However, most wildlife tourism in India is domestic, so not much cash is generated. There are pitfalls with this type of tourism, in that guides and others employed are often not local people, hotels are usually some distance from wildlife sites and locals often don’t receive any benefit from tourist visits, which can lead to resentment. There are some success stories – in Peru all guides are local by law and receive training to fulfil the role. Small-scale tourism in Peru involving locals has spread as nearby villages see the benefits and follow the example of those who set up schemes. However, in India legislation prevents people from setting up such schemes in protected areas, and until this is allowed nature tourism won’t have a role in persuading locals to protect elephants.

ESRC- How do people use the outdoors?

The call for proposals is now open for this year’s ESRC Festival of Social Science, which will run between the 7th and 14th November. Funding of up to £1500 is available for the Festival , and with Bournemouth University becoming an official partner of the Festival, now is the time to start thinking about submitting a proposal if you wish to be involved in 2015.

How do people use the outdoors? Was an interesting event as a part of the 2012 ESRC Festival.

This webinar presented findings from the third year of Monitor of Engagement with the Natural Environment survey. Natural England’s social scientist Judith Hannah spoke about people’s use of the outdoors in England; how and why people use green spaces, and how patterns of use are affected by geography and socio- economic factors.

Masterclass June 11th and 12th: Using Art in Health and Social Care Education and Practice

Two day Masterclass, Thursday 11th and Friday 12th June, Executive Business Centre, Lansdowne Campus

Art has been said to be a way to express ourselves, to make sense of our experiences and to connect with ourselves, others, our world and life. The arts are beginning to gain greater recognition as a deep form of learning.

This Masterclass will provide health and social care educationalists and practitioners with the opportunity to immerse themselves in hands-on arts experience and come away with individualized working methods to adapt in their own practice and learning contexts. No previous experience of the arts is necessary.

Dr Catherine Lamont-Robinson is an artist/researcher, with a BA and MA in Fine Art and a Doctorate in Education. Catherine is passionate about creative engagement and bringing different ways of knowing into practice – drawing on the role of tacit knowledge, discourses around embodiment and whole-body intelligence. She has worked for over ten years in clinical, educational and community contexts and is a Senior Associate Lecturer at Bristol University facilitating Creative Arts and Humanities within Social and Community Medicine.

Schedule:

Each day will start at 9.30am and run until 4.15pm with regular refreshment breaks and lunch provided. The two days will include some presentations, discussions and practical sessions.

’12 Survival stories: learning from narratives about surviving disasters’ was an event which was run during the 2012 ESRC Festival which generated great interest.

The Survival Stories workshop explored community resilience and capacity in disaster responses. It included a Sri Lankan tsunami survivor recounting narratives that bring to life ESRC funded research on the 2004 tsunami; explored empowering approaches to disasters that respected recipients’ needs and priorities; and considered lessons relevant to the UK. Are you inspired to run an event similar to 12 Survival stories at this year’s ESRC Festival?

Title: Transforming research into breast practice

One of the three Impact Case Studies for the 2014 REF was on BU’s impact on the Breast-feeding information and advice webpages of Healthtalkonline. The Breast-feeding webpages of Healthtalkonline were designed by and based on BU research. In order to evidence this impact on the wider population we conducted an online survey of users of these Breast-feeding webpages. The presentation on Wednesday addresses the notion of impact, the survey and key findings as well as more recent research on Breast-feeding at BU that is likely to generate further/different impact!
