Congratulations to BU’s new AHRC Peer Reviewers

As a result of the recent AHRC call for peer reviewers, I’m pleased to announce that eight BU academics were successful in their application and have been asked to join the AHRC Peer Review College. These are:

Congratulations to all. This is a great opportunity to gain greater insight to AHRC and what they fund, as well as an important part of academic citizenship.

The successful applicants have been invited to complete induction training prior to formally joining the PRC. This will give them an opportunity to learn more about AHRC strategy, policy and process, how to write effective reviews, and network with fellow PRC members and AHRC staff.

Becoming an external peer reviewer of research funding applications not only provides an excellent way to contribute to academic citizenship, but it is also an excellent way to expose yourself to high quality research, form networks with peers outside of BU, and have access to the latest research taking place.

AHRC have just launched a new round of AHRC Peer Review College recruitment.

In previous years, this has been convoluted with a nomination process and applying through Je-S. As part of UKRI’s EDI strategy, the new process is much more inclusive and streamlined. A key objective of this recruitment exercise is to further diversity AHRC’s membership and cement plurality of voices in their decision-making processes.

Applications across AHRC’s disciplinary remit are strongly encouraged from persons who identify as an ethnic minority, persons with disabilities, persons of diverse gender identities and expressions, and persons identifying with other groups who are currently underrepresented. Applications are also encouraged from people with specific arts and humanities-relevant professional experience and expertise that is currently underrepresented on the College; a full list can be found in the call document.

Decisions communicated Anticipated to be end January 2022

Changes to the recruitment process:

  • AHRC are changing the nomination model used in previous years, and instead will only be accepting applications directly from individuals who wish to nominate themselves. It is no longer possible for colleagues and/or organisations to nominate individuals on their behalf.
  • Applicants need only fill in a single application form; AHRC are not asking for Je-S submissions. Successful applicants will still need a Je-S account to complete peer review activities and AHRC will support anyone who needs to create an account to do so when they are appointed.
  • AHRC plan to merge the current PRC sub-group structure (Academic, Strategic, International, non-HEI, Knowledge Exchange, Strategic ODA) into a single College for all members in 2022. All new members will simply be appointed as AHRC Peer Review College members.

AHRC require applicants to include the name and email address of an administrative contact at BU, as they will use this to advise BU of any successful applications from your institution. If you are interested in becoming a peer review member, please contact me, Jo Garrad.

AHRC Peer Review College call for nominations

The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) is seeking nominations for new members to be appointed to its Peer Review College (PRC).

Peer review lies at the heart of the AHRC’s operations, and they are fully committed to the principle of peer review for the assessment of applications to our schemes and programmes. PRC members provide expert quality reviews of applications within their areas of expertise, which inform the AHRC’s decision making processes. Members can also be called upon to sit on assessment or moderation panels. As well as making an important contribution to the AHRC’s peer review processes, the experience gained by membership of the College provides benefits to individuals, departments and higher education institutions.

This is an open call for membership to the AHRC Peer Review College; nominees can also apply for membership to any of our individual colleges in addition to the Academic College. The Call for Nominations is open to any organisation that has eligible staff (including organisations from the charitable, third and private sector) and who can supply eligible nominators.

The nomination process must be centrally managed and supported by the institution (not the nominee), with all nominations being submitted by institutions rather than individual nominees.

Please refer to the PRC Recruitment 2019 Call Document (PDF, 282KB) and the FAQ Document (PDF, 182KB) for further information and application guidance. Whilst the deadline for nominations is 16:00 on 15 October 2019, the internal BU deadline is 8th October 2019. Nominees must create a Je-S account to complete the process and nominators must complete their case for support via the nominee. Once this is completed, Jo Garrad, RDS Funding Development Manager, will submit all nominations via the SmartSurvey, uploading one PDF document comprising of the CV, publication list (from the nominee), and Case for Support (from the nominator).

I will be happy to discuss this further with anyone who is interested in applying. Being an external peer reviewer comes with many benefits, such as networking with peers, direct contact with a funder, and visibility of world-leading research applications to name but a few.

If successful, College members will be appointed for one term (4 years) commencing 1 January 2020 and ending 31 December 2023.

New PRC members are required to attend an induction session. Induction training will run from January-March 2020 and invitations will be sent to successful nominees during December.

As well as making an important contribution to the AHRC’s peer review processes, the experience gained by membership of the College will provide benefits to you, your department and to Bournemouth University.

Nominations are welcomed for either of the below Calls:

Call for Early Career Researchers (ECRs)

Eligibility – Nominations for all candidates who meet the eligibility for the PRC Academic group (ECR) and who meet the AHRC ECR criteria.  At the point of nomination to the college the nominee must be:

  • Within eight years of the award of their PhD or equivalent professional training or
  • Within six years  of their first academic appointment

Please be aware that current AHRC PRC members do not need to apply for this call. Former PRC members are only eligible to apply if their PRC membership ended before 16th April 2013.  For further information, read the ECR Call for Nominations advert (PDF 71KB, opens in a new window).

Call for membership of the Strategic and Technical reviewer groups

Eligibility – Nominations for all candidates, from any career stage, who meet the criteria for the Strategic or Technical groups of the AHRC PRC.  Current members are eligible to apply for this Call if they meet the criteria for one or either of these groups. The deadline for nominations to both Calls is 12 noon on 16th April 2015.

If successful, College members will be appointed for a term commencing 1 October 2015 and ending 31 December 2018.

AHRC presentation – slides now available

Last week, Professor Mark Llewellyn – Head of Research for the AHRC came to BU.  

He spent the day with us, meeting with our AHRC peer reviewers,  Arts and Humanities Profs, Deputy Deans and AHRC grant holders.  Professor Llewellyn also addressed a well-attended public meeting.    We gave Professor Llewellyn a good introduction to BU and our work – and I’m delighted to say he found the day extremely informative.

Congratulations to BU’s newly appointed AHRC reviewers!

Congratulations to Neal White and Dr Bronwen Thomas in the Media School who have both been appointed as reviewers to the AHRC. This is fantastic news!

Their membership of the AHRC peer review college will run from April 2012 until December 2015.

College members are invited to submit peer reviews which are used by moderating panels as the basis to make decisions on whether applications are of a fundable standard. Assessments are made using a pre-defined grading scale. Typically three reviews are required for each funding proposal.
