At BU we promote and celebrate the work done to engage public audiences with our research. The Public Engagement with Research team in Research Development and Support can help promote your event to relevant audiences through our monthly newsletters and via our social media channels.

To be considered for inclusion, your event or activity must be;

Focused on BU research, either solely or as part of a wider programme. Events or activities that do not involve BU research, such as marketing or recruitment events, will not be accepted.
Intended for and open to non-academic audiences, either entirely or as a portion of the audience.
Submitted, at the latest, in the first two weeks of the month preceding the event. For example, an event taking place in June should be submitted via the form any time before 14 May.

Event descriptions may be edited for consistency in style with other content.

Open Call for HEIF Knowledge Exchange Project Applications 2024

Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) February 2024 Open Call

HEIF funding is now available for innovative Knowledge Exchange projects.

Research England provide universities with funding for knowledge exchange (Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF)) to enable them to support and develop a broad range of knowledge-based interactions and work with business, public and third sector organisations, community bodies and the wider public, to exchange knowledge and increase the economic and societal benefit from their work.

The primary purpose of the funding is to support a small number of projects which can include:

significant projects that are underway and require a further injection of funds;
existing knowledge exchange projects to develop these ideas to the next stage of development;
projects with ambition that require a seed funding, capacity building, proof-of-concept or launchpad (please note that follow-up funding to support further development of your successfully funded HEIF-projects will be available to apply for in the 2024-25 academic cycle; we encourage applications for this call as an opportunity to kick-start your work).

The HEIF FEBRUARY 2024 OPEN CALL fund supports the ambition of the UK Government’s Plan for Growth to support and incentivise creative ideas and technologies that will shape the UK’s future. Further developing BU’s work in this area will also enable us to support UKRI’s aims to support cooperation and collaboration, as well as developing our academic talent. The aim is to provide a platform for academics to take their knowledge exchange ideas to the next stage of development or to completion.

Key details

Amount: This year, £50000 of BU’s HEIF grant will be allocated through this open call, to support up to 6 knowledge exchange and innovation projects.

Timeframe: Projects should span a maximum of 4 months. The funds awarded must be spent by 31 July 2024.

Are you a Postgraduate Researcher at Bournemouth University? Do you want to share your research with a public audience and improve your communication skills? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you.

We are looking for 3-4 post-graduate researchers to take part in a special edition of our Café Scientifique public event series to deliver a short talk about your research to a friendly public audience. The event will take place from 6:30-8:00pm on Tuesday 7 May 2024 at The Black Cherry in Boscombe.

Café Scientifique is a fun and informal way to engage the public with your research and get feedback from different perspectives. You will receive training and support from our experienced Café Scientifique organisers in the Public Engagement Team, who will help you prepare and deliver your talk with confidence.

Please complete a short form to let us know why you are interested in getting involved, and include a bit about your research.

If selected, we will send you guidance on how to develop and deliver an engaging talk to a public audience. We will ask you to produce and practice a ‘draft’ version of your talk.

You will be invited to attend a training session on Tuesday 9 April to deliver your talk in front of the organisers and other speakers involved with the event. We will provide you with supportive feedback and ask you to do the same to the other selected speakers.

The Public Engagement Team will organise the event and promote it to local public audiences. The team will support you every step of the way. From developing your ideas to engage with a public audience, to setting up and promoting your event. We will also be on hand on the day to help your event run smoothly

Create Something New at Coffee and Konfer – Wednesday 20 March

Join experts from Konfer for a Faculty-specific session, offering a guided tour of the platform and support to set up your profile or your Research Centre page for powerful research and knowledge exchange connections.

Konfer offers an efficient way to navigate around resources, technology and innovation capabilities that exist in the UK innovation eco-system. Through Konfer, you can discover and engage with experts beyond your typical reach and discuss new ideas and opportunities for projects.

This is an opportunity to meet with the Konfer team, have a guided tour of the platform and its full functionality, enabling you to create and connect to the UK research collaborations with other universities, businesses and other organisations. By the end of your session you will have set up your own profile, with guidance and support from Ranbir and Shivaun from Konfer, and be ready to post or respond to collaboration opportunities.

As well as a Faculty specific session, you can also attend the Konfer Drop-In Surgery in the afternoon.

You will also learn how to write evaluation reports for funders or for the REF. This workshop requires good base knowledge of evaluation, ideally from attending the previous Evaluation of Engagement workshop.

Café Scientifique Tuesday 5 March 2024 – From ‘student’ to ‘lifesaver’: how understanding identity can help new paramedics

We’ll be joined by Peter Phillips on Tuesday 5 March from 6:30 – 8:00pm.

Paramedics have the worst wellbeing of all healthcare professionals, and the newly-qualified are particularly vulnerable. But it is not necessarily for the obvious reasons of dealing with traumatic events.

Join Bournemouth University’s Peter Phillips, a senior lecturer in paramedic science, to hear how his research about identity among newly qualified paramedics could help make them more resilient.

This event will be held at The Black Cherry in Boscombe, Bournemouth. Although the talks start at 6:30pm, the café will be open early so we encourage you to arrive early for a drink and a bite to eat before the talk starts.

Age Friendly Communities co-ordinator to present at Community Voices webinar February 14th 12-1pm

February’s webinar welcomes Heather Olive the Age Friendly Community Coordinator for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

In a response to the older population increasing globally The World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2010 created an initiative called ‘Age Friendly Communities.’ The aim is that Age Friendly Communities enable people to continue to stay living in their homes, living the life they want to live for as long as possible. Importantly in these communities, older residents help to shape the place that they live. Locally we have built a network of over 80 organisations working towards this common aim. Nationally we share knowledge and best practice through the support of the Centre for Ageing Better.

Community voices is a collaboration between BU PIER partnership and Centre for Seldom Heard Voices to provide a platform and a voice to local community activists.

Are you passionate about sharing your work in STEM? Do you want to capture the imagination when explaining your love of science? Join the team behind New Scientist Live to discover the secrets behind the UK’s biggest science show.

In this free lunchtime virtual event, host Martin Davies (Head of Event Production, New Scientist) will welcome science communicator and engagement consultant Dr Jamie Gallagher, as he reveals how to prepare memorable talks and interactive stands that leave a lasting impression. Martin will also be joined by colleague Jacqui Mccarron, as they explore what they look for when inviting speakers and selecting exhibitors for New Scientist Live.

Jamie Gallagher is an award-winning freelance communicator and engagement professional with ten years’ experience in the delivery and evaluation of quality engagement projects. Working across dozens of institutions and subject areas he has helped improve the reach, profile and impact of research engagement in almost every discipline. Jamie is also a science communicator and can often be found on TV, radio or stage making research accessible.

Media coverage in Nepal

Last week Mr. Yogesh Dhakal, who is Deputy Editor at Shilapatra, an online newspaper in Nepal, interviewed three UK professors: Julie Balen (Canterbury Christ Church University), Simon Rushton (the University of Sheffield) and Edwin van Teijlingen (Bournemouth University). The focus of the interview (see interview online here) was our recently completed interdisciplinary study ‘The impact of federalisation on Nepal’s health system: a longitudinal analysis’.

In this Nepal Federal Health System Project we studied the consequences for the health system of Nepal’s move from a centralised political system to a more federal structure of government. This three-year project is UK-funded by the MRC, Wellcome Trust and FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office; formerly DFID) under the Health Systems Research Initiative. This joint project is led by the University of Sheffield in collaboration with Bournemouth University, the University of Huddersfield, Canterbury Christ Church University and two institutions in Nepal, namely MMIHS (Manmohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences) and PHASE Nepal.

Today (23rd January) the article appeared online in Nepali. We have seen the transcript in English of the actual interviews with the three of us, but I have no idea how the journalist has edited, selected and translated the relevant text.

A tale of two ministries

Yesterday in Nepal we attempted to meet two government ministers to present policy recommendations generated by the study examining the consequences for the health system of Nepal’s move to a federal government structure. This three-year project is UK-funded by the MRC, Wellcome Trust and the FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office; formerly DFID) under the Health Systems Research Initiative. Through our collaborating partners in Nepal we had managed to make initial contacts with the Prime Minister’s office and a senior secretary in the Ministry of Health & Population. The timing was significant as yesterday was the last day that UK-based members of our team were in Nepal. The day started with a possible meeting with first the Prime Minister Pushpa Dahal, followed by a possible meeting with the Health Minister Mohan Baladur Basnet. However, as the saying goes ‘timing is everything!’ And, in the end the time was against us.

One of the two principle investigators of our study, Professor Simon Rushton from the University of Sheffield, and got ready early in the morning, only to be told by our Nepalese collaborators that the traffic in Kathmandu was hectic. Having waited for nearly an hour for our transport, we decided to split up with one of us joining some of our Nepalese collaborators trying to see the Prime Minister (PM) and the other one with a team to visit the Minister of Health & Population. Prof. Rushton went to the latter and after a period of waiting he and one of our Nepalese collaborators managed to meet the Minister and his staff. He also managed to hand over our policy recommendations. This offered a nice picture opportunity to illustrate a REF Impact Case Study.

Three other Nepalese collaborators and I, on the other hand, waited for over two hours in the waiting room of the Prime Minister, who turned out to be in an urgent meeting with two senior ministers. After over two hours we had to call off our attempt to see the PM. All I ended up with as ‘evidence’ was a picture of the tissue box in the PM’s waiting room. In the end I had to rush to Tribhuven International Airport to catch my flight to Qatar, then onward to London Gatwick.

For the team visiting the PM it felt very much like Robert Burns’ poem: “The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men. Gang aft agley.”

TV interview in Nepal

Two days ago Professor Edwin van Teijlingen from BU’s Faculty of Health & Social Sciences was interviewed by the national television channel News24 in Kathmandu, Nepal. His interview covered some more personal questions, including the question how Edwin became involved in research in Nepal two decades ago, followed questions about recent research projects. The latter involved questions about the nearly completed project “The Impact of Federalisation on Nepal’s Health System: A longitudinal Analysis’. This project, launched in 2020 at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, is led by the University of Sheffield, in collaboration with BU, the University of Huddersfield, Canterbury Christ Church University, PHASE Nepal and MMIHS (Manmohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences). This nearly four-year project is UK-funded by the MRC (Medical Research Council), the Wellcome Trust and DFID (now called the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office [FCDO]) under the Health Systems Research Initiative.

There were also questions about the health and well-being of Nepal’s migrant workers, partly related to a recently finished study on kidney health of migrant workers funded by The Colt Foundation and a new project led by La Isla Network in the United States of America (USA). La Isla Network, Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health (in the USA) , Nepal Development Society and Bournemouth University are leading the first-ever international effort to research and address trafficking among Nepalese labour migrants. The work is funded by a $4 million cooperative agreement awarded by the U.S. Department of State’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, International Programs.

On my latest trip to Nepal I noticed a number of related newspaper stories about those wanting to migrate abroad for work. Yesterday there was an article with the headline ‘Three held for defrauding unemployed youths’ (The Himalayan Times, January 11, page 2), which could be seen as story about crime, just like the one next to it on the same page with was headed ‘Vehicle stolen’ (The Himalayan Times, January 11, page 2) . Both fit under the category of people suffering from crime committed by naughty people. However, having studied labour migration as a sociologist for over a decade it also speaks of the desperation of young people to leave Nepal. In that sense, the ‘Three held for defrauding unemployed youths’ story, is more like the story the day before ‘Family of Nepali who joined Russian Army worried after hearing about his death’ (The Himalayan Times, January 10, page 1).

In the latter story of a tragic death of a Nepalese mercenary, the most unexpected element I found was that Nepalese victim had paid Rs. 500,000 to criminals, who acted as brokers. I would have expected that Putin’s agents operating in the Middle East were paying large amounts of money to potential army recruits to fight in the invasion of Ukraine. To my great surprise, the payment was the other way round, where Nepalese migrant workers are desperate enough to pay the country at war. When people are desperate to work abroad unscrupulous brokers see opportunities to make money.

Whilst at the end of December 2023 two Nepalese men were killed when Korean language test candidates were staging demonstrations in Kathmandu demanding that they be allowed to appear for language tests for jobs in the manufacturing sector in South Korea. When the Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport stopped to intervene, he sparked a riot and his car was set on fire. The police opened fire and killed two protesters in a very un-Nepalese way of dealing with protest. Again to me the underlying issue to note is how desperate these men are to go abroad and get to work in South Korea.

ECR Public Engagement Opportunity: Share your research with the public at Café Scientifique

Are you an Early Career Researcher looking to gain experience in Public Engagement? Would you like to share your research with a public audience? Get involved with our Café Scientifique series

Café Scientifique is a public event that takes place at The Black Cherry in Boscombe on the first Tuesday evening of the month (excluding January & August), and is organised centrally by the BU Public Engagement with Research Team, part of Research Development and Support.

The format involves delivering a short talk, followed by the opportunity for discussion and questions from a varied public audience. It is a fantastic opportunity for you to gain experience in engaging with the public in a friendly relaxed atmosphere.

We welcome academics at all career stages, although this opportunity is particularly valuable for those getting started in engaging with the public. We encourage collaboration between less experienced and more experienced public speakers to help provide support and gain a rewarding learning experience.

The team will support you every step of the way. From developing your ideas to engage with a public audience, to setting up and promoting your event. We will also be on hand on the day to help your event run smoothly.
