Donning the ‘Slow Professor’

Congratulations to the Bournemouth authors who published the paper ‘Donning the ‘Slow Professor’: A Feminist Action Research Project’ earlier this month [1].  This paper was published in the journal Radical Teacher.  The paper argues that the corporatisation of Higher Education has introduced new performance measurements as well as an acceleration of academic tasks creating working environments characterised by speed, pressure and stress. This paper discusses findings from a qualitative, feminist participatory action research (PAR) study undertaken by an interdisciplinary team of women academics at a modern, corporate university in England. The study illuminates how corporatized HE erodes faculty autonomy, degrades learning environments, damages professional satisfaction and health. Strategies for resistance and liberation developed through the PAR process are discussed.

Next week sees the launch of Talk BU Live, a series of live talks from our academics aimed at getting people thinking and talking.

The first event will be in Dylan’s on 23 September and will start at 5.30pm. The talk itself will last 20 minutes or so.

Who is Talk BU Live aimed at? Anyone in the BU community – so academic staff, professional staff and students.

Too often we hear the term “silos” to describe working and studying at BU, so this is an opportunity to come along and explore other areas than just where you work or where you study. We need as a university to give our community a range of opportunities to expand horizons, to meet other people and to share ideas. Talk BU Live will be a chance to add to the whole experience of being involved with BU in whatever capacity.

The first talk is by Professor Stephen Heppell and is entitled “Shoeless & Sausages: Making Learning Better”. Stephen is an internationally acclaimed academic, practitioner and innovator of learning in all its forms and this is a fantastic opportunity to hear a truly influential voice in the field of education discussing the world of learning. Stephen’s research is very wide-ranging and touches on everything from not wearing shoes in class to aid concentration to what one should eat on the morning of an exam.

HEA Workshop and Seminar Series Thematic seminars, 2012-13

The Higher Education Academy is inviting HEIs to host thematic workshops and seminars that disseminate findings from research or evaluation work, or share evidence-informed policy and/or practice. A grant of £750 is available from the HEA to support each workshop run by the HEI.   This is an excellent opportunity to disseminate outcomes from your Education Excellence projects.

The next call for proposals for workshops in 2012/13 opens 01 October 2012 and closes 29 October 2012.  Workshops or seminars should be held during the spring and summer (February – July 2013).

The three thematic areas for this call are:

•  Employability – includes integrating work experience; addressing employer perspectives.

•  Flexible learning – includes using technology to support flexibility in the pace or place of delivery; engagement with employers to promote flexibility of pace, place or mode of delivery.

•  Internationalisation – includes student mobility; internationalising the curriculum; integration of home and international students; promoting intercultural understanding.
