Pre-award Omnibus Day & Your FDOs before Easter

The Funding Development Officers (FDOs) will be delivering Pre-award workshops as part of the RKE Development Framework on Thursday 13 April.

These Pre-award workshops are:

  1. Getting Started with Applying for Research Funding;
  2. Pre-award Finances;
  3. BU Processes for Applying for Funding.

If you haven’t already booked and would like to attend, please click on the links above and book yourselves in!

Therefore, on 13 April, your FDOs will have very limited, if no access to emails. After this date, BU is closed for the Easter long weekend.

Happy New Year from your new Research Facilitator for FHSS & FST

img_4095I have recently joined the Research and Knowledge Exchange Office (RKEO) as the Research Facilitator for the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences (FHSS) and the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), covering Jenny Roddis’ maternity leave.

As Research Facilitator I provide support to researchers from the outset to develop their ideas, including horizon scanning and identifying potential funding opportunities, building research teams and advising on bid content and structure.

Before joining RKEO I was Clinical Research Co-ordinator in the Bournemouth University Clinical Research Unit, which entailed working closely with researchers in local NHS Trusts to facilitate collaborations with academics across BU. I have a BSc in Psychology from Cardiff University, and a background in mental health research having previously worked as a Research Assistant in Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust. Whilst there, I co-ordinated NHS grant applications, designed, costed and delivered research projects including the recruitment and assessment for a large MRC funded trial.

Presentation to Research Staff Association 30 November 2016

Thanks to Michelle Heward for organising this event for research staff. Ehren Milner and Emily Cieciura (RKEO) gave a short presentation on the new RKE Development Framework illustrating its flexibility for researchers at any stage! The framework is now being run through Organisational Development and details can be found  by clicking on the RKE development framework category link (above) or visiting the OD page on the staff intranet.

BU Clinical Research Unit were also there (in the form of Lisa Gale-Andrews and Sharon Docherty) and provided an overview of the FREE support available to ANYONE interested in health or social care research. Research & Knowledge Exchange Development Framework: Getting started on applying for research funding – Tomorrow 27 Oct at 12.00 noon!

The first session for the ‘Pre-Award at BU’ pathway called ‘Getting started on applying for research funding’ will be held tomorrow in Poole House, PG10!

This session will explore how best to adapt research in response to the changing external environment. The workshop will provide information on the best routes to funding based upon career stages and also introduce who in RKEO can support you.

By the end of this session you will:

  • Understand how best to access help with research proposals at BU
  • Identify appropriate funders for different areas of research.

The Student Project Bank has launched!

We are delighted to announce that the Student Project Bank has launched and is accepting project proposals. If you have an idea that has the potential to benefit community and society, or work with an organisation that does, please contact us.

The Student Project Bank is looking for community organisations, charities, not-for-profit organisations and corporate partners that would like help implementing a project that benefits society. It can be anything that benefits an individual, a community or society such as a piece of research, service improvement or a creative project.

The Student Project Bank is a mutually beneficial collaboration between external organisations and our students. As part of their studies, our students get to work on a live project with the potential for real-world impact. Each project will give students the opportunity to put theory into practice, develop transferrable skills and gain real-world project experience. External organisations get the opportunity to benefit from their knowledge, skills and creativity whilst gaining valuable insights into their project area.

Projects are available to all students studying at undergraduate or Master’s level and can be used for their dissertation, final project, an assignment or group work. There are also opportunities for projects to be carried out for extra-curricular experience. Projects are available for academic members of staff to select to set to their students.

**New** Intention to Bid Forms & Annexures for Quality Approval

The Faculties have requested, through the Deputy Deans of Research & Professional Practice (DDRPPs), that RKEO provide support targeted to achieve their research strategies. To aid in this, it has been agreed that, as part of the internal approvals process for bids involving external funding, the following shall become mandatory:

  1. An Intention to Bid (ITB) form must be lodged with RKEO; and
  2. At the time of lodgement, the PI must cc. his/her Head of Research with the ITB Form.

To implement the DDRPPs’ decision, RKEO has taken the opportunity to produce a more easy-to-use, streamlined ITB form to be used across all Faculties, with an Annexure for Quality Approval (A-QA) that is customised for each Faculty.

The ITB form and A-QAs will shortly be uploaded onto the Staff Intranet for download and use.

The RKE Bid Timeline and RKE Sample Costs documents on the same Staff Intranet page will also shortly be updated for reference.

RKEO’s Funding Development Team is available to provide pre-award support and their contact details can be found on the Research Blog. Should you have any difficulty in accessing the documents on the Staff Intranet, please request them from us and we will send you a copy.

Due to various staff movements and other exigencies of the workplace, the original team of Funding Development Officers which previously comprised 4.2 FTE to support the 4 Faculties is currently comprised of 2.4 FTE. For optimal support of your application and to aid in workload management, it is of particular importance that a completed ITB form and A-QA be lodged with RKEO at the earliest opportunity, ideally 3 weeks before the submission deadline.

EU and International Research Facilitator Surgery – Thursday 14th May 2016

emailEmily Cieciura, RKEO’s Research Facilitator for EU and International funding will be available to chat about funding opportunties from 1-2pm on Thursday 12th May 2016, based in the Global Hub room (DG68).

As these sessions have not proved popular with academics, as has been the case with the RKEO Drop-in Sessions, this will be the last one.

RKEO Drop-in sessions – cancelled due to unpopular demand

flyingIn response to positive feedback from academics about how much they benefit from face-to-face meetings with staff from RKEO, we set up monthly drop-in sessions for 2016.  Unfortunately, these were not as valued as we thought they would be, i.e. no academics chose to drop-in to the three held to date.  Therefore, all future sessions are now cancelled.

If there is a specific member of RKEO that you would like to meet with then please contact them directly to arrange a meeting.

RKEO win NUS Green Impact Award – Silver

RKEO have spent the last year greening up the office and doing our bit for the environment and the well-being of the RKEO team.  We submitted to the NUS Green Impact Award in February and we are proud to announce that we achieved the Silver award status, which is excellent as this was our first ever entry.

DSC03613 (2)We have achieved a lot in the last year, which includes reducing our printing by 24.3% (we’re aiming for 50% in two years) and we have saved BU 34% on printing costs by significantly reducing our colour printing; we’ve recycled and reused practically everything we could have; we’ve introduced a switch-off campaign; various lunch clubs involve walking, quizzing, spinning and craft; we contributed to Fair Trade Fortnight; we’ve reduced car usage when travelling to work; everyone has a plant on their desk; and much, much more.

Our greening initiative was called GHEFRRE (Green, Healthy, Ethical, Fair, Recycle, Reuse, Environmental) and an endangered finger monkey was our mascot.GHEFFRE  Congratulations to the whole team!

Unfortunately, despite lots of advertising, no one has taken up the opportunity to attend the first two drop-in sessions. Therefore, operating a three strikes and we’re out policy, if no one attends the next drop-in session then we will cancel those organised for the rest of this year.

The next drop-in session is scheduled for 20th April, between 2-4pm in the Talbot Atrium cafe.
