Co-designed and co-delivered Master’s level unit: Public Involvement in Research

Applications are open for the next delivery of the M-level 20 credit CPD unit: Public Involvement in Research. Application deadline 27^th September 2022. This course is delivered online one day a week for 5 weeks starting on Tuesday 25th October. The unit is open to external applicants (researchers and PPI leads and officers); PGRs (as part of the Doctoral programme) and BU staff.

This Master’s level unit is co-designed and delivered by the PIER (Public Involvement in Education and Research) Partnership and Dr Mel Hughes. Our focus is on learning by doing with the support and guidance of PIER partnership members, to develop inclusive public involvement in research and practice.

Doctoral College Afternoon Tea at the Beach

A huge ‘Thank You’ to everyone who came along to the Afternoon Tea at the Beach, at Branksome Dene Room on 15 June. The event was hosted by the Doctoral College for the BU postgraduate research community.

Postgraduate research students and supervisors were able to take some well-deserved time out to network and catch up in a relaxed beach location, with a sumptuous afternoon tea. It was a perfect celebration for PGRs returning to campus post the pandemic, enhanced by a beautiful sunny day by the sea.

Workshop ‘Sensitive Pasts and Difficult Presents: working with young people through participatory arts’ – 27th June, 2022

Some of you might be interested in this workshop, titled ‘Sensitive Pasts and Difficult Presents: working with young people through participatory arts‘, taking place this upcoming Monday, 27^th June 2022, at BU (Talbot Campus). The workshop aims to bring together colleagues from across BU’s research centres, exploring how working with and for young people in sensitive contexts, both, locally and across the world, can be informed by interdisciplinary approaches (including Social Sciences, the Arts, and arts-based technologies).

Several colleagues will provide short presentations and thought pieces based on their research and experiences in the application of participatory arts-based methods in such contexts. Including a ‘world café’, the workshop aims to provide a forum to compare and exchange our experiences, learning and research outcomes rather than a classic, entirely lecture-based format.

This event is organised by the Centre for Seldom Heard Voices (Stephanie Schwandner-Sievers; RA Emily Fisher). The workshop includes colleagues from CEMP, CESJ, EMERGE, and further members are warmly invited to attend. We hope this event will be of particular interest to colleagues working in and through the participatory arts, specifically with vulnerable or marginalised groups, internationally or closer to home.

‘Participatory Research: Doing Research Inclusively, Doing Research Well’: 11th & 12th July, 1.30-3.30pm, BGB216

Learn how to engage stakeholders and communities in your research in a more meaningful, collaborative way in this short course, led by the co-director of the National Centre for Research Methods, Professor Melanie Nind. We have a small number of places left for researchers at all stages in their careers – you can sign up here.

The course comprises two 2-hour workshop sessions for 12-30 people (optimum 20) plus recordings and additional materials. Both sessions will be in person at the Bournemouth Gateway Building, and we encourage academics from all faculties to sign up for both workshops.

Participants will gain clear insight into the multiple agendas driving participatory research. Together we will develop know-how in addition to know-what needed for participatory research. The group will work collaboratively to develop their own ideas stimulated by shared examples and real-life conundrums.

Day 1: The why of participatory research – Adding value

Researching with not on: The changing dynamics of research and rationale behind the democratisation of research
Making the most of lived experience to add value to research
Participatory research designs and methods – different ways of knowing
5 practical changes we can make and why

Day 2: The how of participatory research – How to enhance research participation and quality

Co-producing research proposals and project designs
Participatory ways of working – getting ideas from successful projects
This is my truth – tell me yours – co-producing findings and outputs
5 steps to doing research inclusively and doing research well.

Professor Nind is also the author of What is Inclusive Research?, Director of the Centre for Research in Inclusion at the University of Southampton and Deputy Director of the South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership. She has expertise in the areas of education, disability studies and methodology and extensive experience supporting the development of participatory/inclusive research both locally and internationally.

Engaging in professional development – a workshop for researchers

On 29^th June, Vitae are visiting BU and running a series of events in one day to promote the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers.

One of the events running 11-1pm will be focused on Engaging in professional development and is a workshop directed at researchers.

The workshop will introduce participants to tools to assist them in managing their own professional development planning, exploring concepts, and techniques to assist them in setting, pursuing and achieving their career goals. It will be based around the Researcher Development Framework (RDF) and how it can be incorporated into their planning to effectively support their career development.

The workshop will explore:

• What we mean by professional development planning

• Why it should matter to researchers

• The core skills and attributes of effective researchers

• How to identify one’s own skills and attributes

• How to approach building a career development plan

By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed an understanding of the key concepts of career development, considered their current skillset, and started to design a roadmap to bridge the gap between the two, using the RDF.

BU Research Conference: Building Impact – conference schedule

The first annual BU research conference will take place on Tuesday 7 June.

This year’s theme is building impact, celebrating our REF 2021 submission and exploring practical ways to create impact and share your research.

Our keynote speaker will be Professor Simon Hettrick from the University of Southampton. He is Chair of the Hidden REF, which aims to recognise all research outputs and every role that makes research possible. He will be talking about the Hidden REF and its role in campaigning for a fairer approach to research assessment.

We’ll also have quick-fire presentations sharing some of our research impact and a panel discussion around the role of impact in research assessment.

Several practical sessions will provide tips and advice around building impact and sharing your research. These will explore working with the media and policymakers, public engagement, commercialisation of research, and how to write an impact case study.

These sessions will also be repeated online later in the week for anyone who cannot make it on the day.

The half-day conference will take place in the Fusion Building on Talbot Campus from 1pm – 5pm on Tuesday 7 June. Sessions will also be streamed online for those who can’t make it in-person. The conference is open to all BU staff and postgraduate researchers.

Light refreshments will be provided, and the conference will be followed by a drinks reception from 5pm to celebrate BU’s REF submission.

Applications are now open for M-level 20 credit CPD unit: Public Involvement in Research. Application deadline 3^rd May. This course is delivered online for 5 consecutive Tuesdays starting on Tuesday 31^st May. The unit is open to external applicants; PGRs (as part of the Doctoral programme) and BU staff.

This Master’s level unit is co-designed and delivered by the PIER (Public Involvement in Education and Research) Partnership and Dr Mel Hughes. As a participant you will explore and evaluate a range of models and approaches to public involvement in research from shaping your research idea and through each stage of the research cycle. You will identify a strategy for public involvement (what, why and how) that will best fit your research study allowing you to gain an appreciation of how collaborating with people with lived experience (public, patients, carers, service users and potential users) can enhance your research. Specific emphasis will be placed on strategies for engaging and collaborating with marginalised groups so as not to reinforce social and health inequalities and inequities. Sessions will be interactive and involve drawing on the expertise of people with lived experience, including members of the PIER partnership.

Recruiting a PhD Studentship

The Doctoral College receive many queries from BU academics asking how to recruit a PhD studentship. They may have been successful in a bid that included costing for a PhD student, or believe they have a strong research project which would be suitable for a PhD student to undertake. They may even have been working with an external organisation who is excited to work with us and have offered the funding for a PhD student to undertake some research.

To assist academic colleagues in navigating the next steps for a studentship, we’ve created this helpful flow chart to show you the next steps. This flow chart will ask a few questions such as if you already have funding agreed (and where it is coming from), and even provides recommendations of what to do if you don’t have the full funding confirmed.

Your first point of contact will always be the PGR Admissions team or RDS Research Facilitator, who can provide further detail and assistance for you. We can advise on the studentship schemes BU runs internally, how to submit a proposal to the fees board if your project does not have full funding, and the additional steps such as the research contract that will need completing alongside colleagues in RDS and Legal Services.

UKCGE Recognised Research Supervisors: Congratulations

Congratulations to the following doctoral supervisors who have successfully gained UKCGE (UK Council for Graduate Education) Recognised Research Supervisor status:

Dr Kaouther Kooli (BUBS)
Dr Mark Readman (FMC)
Dr Xiaosong Yang (FMC)
Dr Geli Roushan (FLIE)

These individuals join 9 other colleagues from across BU (BUBS (1); FHSS (7); FST (1)) who have already gained this national recognition for their doctoral supervision. To submit the portfolio, you must have at least one doctoral completion.

There are opportunities for anyone who has experience of doctoral supervision to find out more at forthcoming Doctoral College Supervisory Lunch Bites on Wednesday 2 March and Monday 16 May. These sessions provide an introduction to the UKCGE’s Good Supervisory Practice Framework and the Research Supervision Recognition Programme which allows established supervisors to gain recognition for this challenging, but rewarding, role. Staff attending the sessions will be able to:

use the Framework to navigate the wide-ranging, highly complex and demanding set of roles that modern research supervisors must undertake to perform the role effectively
reflect on their own practice, compared to a benchmark of good practice
identify strengths and weaknesses and build upon the former and address the latter with targeted professional development
work towards recognition of their expertise by a national body.

These sessions will be led by Dr Martyn Polkinghorne, UKCGE Recognised Research Supervisor; BUBS: Principal Academic; FLIE: Education Excellence Theme Leader; TeachBU: Academic Lead. Dr Polkinghorne is a national reviewer for the scheme on behalf of UKCGE.

The Faculty of Health & Social Sciences is also running 3 sessions to support staff in reflecting upon their practice, and build in underpinning evidence. This open to staff from all faculties to find about the scheme and start to think about the different components. Further details can be found here.

UKCGE Recognised Research Supervisors: Calling all doctoral supervisors

Come and find out about getting external accreditation for your wonderful doctoral supervision!

The UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE) runs a national recognition scheme for doctoral supervisors.

The Doctoral College is running two lunchbites to introduce staff to the scheme.

The Faculty of Health & Social Sciences is also running 3 sessions to support staff in reflecting upon their practice, and build in underpinning evidence. This is open to staff from all faculties to find out about the scheme and start to think about the different components. To submit the portfolio, you must have at least one doctoral completion.
