New HRA guidance launched for public co-applicants in research

‘Increasing numbers of public contributors are helping to shape and deliver health and social care research, and there has been a rise in the number of public co-applicants joining research teams.

Involving members of the public in research design and development has been shown to have a positive effect on projects by improving the quality and relevance of research. However, until now there has been no guidance, either for researchers or for people involved, about what it means to be a co-applicant.

Now new guidance co-developed by NIHR-INVOVLE, the NHS R&D Forum and the Health Research Authority, has been launched to help support members of the public who are co-applicants on research grants and ensure that their contribution is valuable and rewarding.’

Research Professional – all you need to know

Funding opportunities

Every BU academic has a Research Professional account which delivers weekly emails detailing funding opportunities in their broad subject area. To really make the most of your Research Professional account, you should tailor it further by establishing additional alerts based on your specific area of expertise. The Funding Development Team Officers can assist you with this, if required.

Research Professional have created several guides to help introduce users to ResearchProfessional. These can be downloaded here.

Quick Start Guide: Explains to users their first steps with the website, from creating an account to searching for content and setting up email alerts, all in the space of a single page.

User Guide: More detailed information covering all the key aspects of using ResearchProfessional.

Administrator Guide: A detailed description of the administrator functionality.

Research Professional are running a series of online training broadcasts aimed at introducing users to the basics of creating and configuring their accounts on ResearchProfessional. They are holding monthly sessions, covering everything you need to get started with ResearchProfessional. The broadcast sessions will run for no more than 60 minutes, with the opportunity to ask questions via text chat. Each session will cover:

  • Self registration and logging in
  • Building searches
  • Setting personalised alerts
  • Saving and bookmarking items
  • Subscribing to news alerts
  • Configuring your personal profile

Each session will run between 10.00am and 11.00am (UK) on the fourth Tuesday of each month. You can register here for your preferred date:

Next-generation digital healthcare funding – call to open soon!

Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, has up to £5 million to invest in projects through the digital health technology catalyst – a programme that aims to accelerate the development of digital health innovations. UK businesses, partnered with other organisations including NHS organisations, HEIs, charities, public sector organisations, etc can apply for a share of up to £5 million to develop new digital health products through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund. The project lead will need to be a UK-based small or medium-sized business (SME).

The competition is part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund to deliver leading-edge healthcare in the UK.

Summary:

Call open : 11 February 2019

Deadline : 10 April 2019

Funding available : between £300,000 and £1million

Project duration : 18 months (between 1 October 2019 and 1 March 2021)

BU research into breast milk quality-Participants needed

We are looking for breast feeding mums to donate 5 mL of breast milk for a research study conducted at BU.

When mother’s own milk is not sufficient or appropriate, preterm babies can be fed with donor milk from a human milk bank. However, the processes used in milk banking might increase the risk of fat degradation in the milk. Currently, nothing is known about fat degradation products in donor milk. With this study, we aim to quantify fat degradation products in donor milk, and we are currently looking for some term breast milk to compare our results to.

Final call for research photography competition!

The deadline for the research photography competition is tomorrow! If you have a photo that tells a story of your research and represents the theme of place then be sure to email it over to research@bournemouth.ac.uk by the end of tomorrow! Get creative!

The competition itself is set to be displayed in the atrium art gallery throughout the majority of March and so it is a nice opportunity for your research to be seen by those in the university!

New ‘DEALTS 2’ dementia education protocol paper by ADRC team

Many congratulations to Dr Michelle Heward, Dr Michele Board, Ashley Spriggs and Pro Jane Murphy from the ADRC for their new publication ‘Design and evaluation protocol for ‘DEALTS 2’: a simulation-based dementia education intervention for acute care settings’ in International Psychogeriatrics.

The team was commissioned by Health Education England (HEE) to develop and evaluate ‘DEALTS 2’, a national simulation-based education toolkit informed by the Humanisation Values Framework, developed at Bournemouth University and based on an experiential learning approach to facilitate positive impacts on practice. This paper describes the process of developing DEALTS 2 and the protocol for evaluating the impact of this intervention on practice across England.

BU PGR wins Excellent Writer in International Essay Competition hosted in the Republic of Korea

ADEDOYIN Festus, Postgraduate Research student at the Faculty of Management, Bournemouth University recently won an excellent research award from a global essay competition hosted by the Korea Development Institute School of Public Policy and Management, Republic of Korea and using his current research experience at BU as a strength.

Consequently, he was invited to attend and present at the Capacity Development Conference and Workshop on Inclusive Growth with other delegates from across the globe in the Republic of Korea from December 1st to December 9th, 2018. The research exposure at BU is top-notch, the Researcher Development Programme is also highly relevant, and the Faculties at BU are indeed world-class most especially mentoring from the supervisory team – Professor Filis George, Dr Marta Disegna and Dr Neelu Seetaram (University of Huddersfield)

Expanding BU’s India links

Dr. Pramod Regmi and Prof. Edwin van Teijlingen (both in the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences) have been invited to join the scientific committee of the International Conference on Mixed Methods Research [ICMMR-2019].  This year’s ICMMR conference will be held in the School of Behavioural Sciences at the Mahatma Gandhi University in Kottayam (India) on February 22-24, 2019.  The two BU academics will run an online panel discussion session on academic publishing under the heading “Meet the editors.”  The advantage of such online session is that BU academic don’t have to travel to India saving time and money as well as the environment.  This has benefits for their own work-live balance as well as their carbon footprint. 

BU focuses its global collaborations on three geographical areas, one of these is the Indian sub-continent.  Connect India is BU’s strategic Hub of Practice for the Indian sub-continent, bringing together a community of researchers, educators, practitioners and students at Bournemouth University to collaborate with colleagues in India and Nepal.

 

DESTI-SMART. Phase 1 complete

Awarded & submitted bids

Following the launch of  DESTI-SMART Delivering Efficient Sustainable Tourism with low-carbon transport Innovations: Sustainable Mobility, Accessibility and Responsible Travel  on 27 September 2018, the first phase of the project (Semester 1) was completed on 30 November 2018.

DESTI-SMART aims at improving transport and tourism policies at destinations by integrating strategies for sustainable mobility, accessibility and responsible travel in sustainable tourism development, and through efficiency, resilience, intermodality, novel transport systems, cycling and walking for visitors.

The 1.57 million Euro  project is funded from the European Union Interreg Europe programme. Bournemouth University is the advisory partner working with nine  European destination partners.

The outputs from phase will include a newsletter and a Policies review report which will be disseminated shortly and posted on this blog  when published.

Nordberg appointed to editorial board of leading corporate governance journal

Donald Nordberg, associate professor in the Faculty of Management, has been invited to join the editorial board of Corporate Governance: An International Review​, widely regarded as the top journal in its interdisciplinary area. Published by Wiley, CGIR has an SJR H-index of 62. In JCR listings based on 2017 data, it ranked 60th of 210 journals in Management, 50th of 140 journals in Business, and 11th of 98 journals in Finance.
