RKEDF Workshop: Short Talk, Lasting Impression – Tuesday 18 October 10am

Being able to describe what you do and why is an essential skill for any researcher. This workshop will help you take your communication to the next level. Science Communicator and previous international 3MT winner Dr Jamie Gallagher will show you how to turn your research into the most interesting, engaging and memorable presentation possible.

Discover the hints and tips that will make your talk stand out from the crowd and how to banish nerves to give a confident performance.

Following this workshop, you should be able to:

Café Sci: Tuesday 4 October – Digital healthcare for LGBTQ+ communities in Africa

At Café Scientifique, you can explore the latest ideas in science and technology in a relaxed setting. Enjoy listening to a short talk before engaging in debate and discussion with our guest speaker and audience.

We’ll be joined by Dr Festus Adedoyin on Tuesday 4 October from 6:30 – 8:00pm.

Digital healthcare for LGBTQ+ communities in Africa

In Nigeria, LGBTQ+ people are often criminalised and discriminated against, meaning they are less likely to seek medical help despite suffering higher rates of HIV/AIDS, mental health conditions and other problems.

To tackle this problem, Dr Festus Adedoyin is developing a digital solution to provide safer access to healthcare, working with NGOs, social workers and people across the medical field on a confidential and secure online platform.

Join us at Café Scientifique to discover the challenges and rewards of developing a digital solution in a complex social situation.

This event will be held at The Black Cherry in Boscombe, Bournemouth. Although the talk starts at 6:30pm, the café will be open early so we encourage you to arrive early for a drink and a bite to eat before the talk starts.

BU and University Hospitals Dorset celebration and networking event

An event to celebrate the partnership between BU and University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust (UHD) is being held at BU on 18 October 2022.

The event will showcase collaborative research that has taken place between both organisations, and provide networking opportunities for BU academics to meet counterparts at UHD who are interested in further collaborating on research and professional practice.

The partnership between BU and UHD will celebrate its second anniversary as a part of the event, though the organisations have had strong links for many years.

The event will provide an opportunity to hear from senior leaders at both organisations, to understand the collaborative work on current research projects and disciplines, and opportunities for future collaboration.

The event will take place in the Executive Business Centre on Tuesday 18 October 2022, starting at 5.15pm, places are limited. Booking is essential via Eventbrite.

Join a BU online event this Friday lunchtime on challenging the stigma around exercising with epilepsy

Join psychology lecturer Dr Sarah Collard at a free online event this Friday to hear how her research is challenging the assumptions around exercising with epilepsy. Dr Collard was awarded ACORN funding to explore the physical activity levels of people with epilepsy in the UK. The project aimed to:

Establish self-reported physical activity and levels of sedentary behaviour.
Obtain epilepsy-related factors and socio-demographic information.
Investigate the associations between epilepsy-related factors, socio-demographics, and physical activity.

In the online discussion, Dr Collard will outline her findings so far, which will provide important data for people with epilepsy and their families and carers, as well as medical professionals and those working in the fitness and leisure sector.

Carbon tax as a panacea to responsible consumption & production post-COP26

Bournemouth University is hosting an event on 9 June 2022 from 9:30am – 1:00pm on Carbon Tax and how it affects household income inequality.

Several guest speakers from charitable organisations, local businesses, youth activists, and university representatives will be in attendance alongside members of the local council. Free meals including coffee/tea and midday lunch will be provided.

Start reporting your public engagement events now to ensure all data is included in the HE-BCI return

What is HE-BCI?

The Higher Education – Business & Community Interaction (HE-BCI) survey is a mandatory annual return that BU makes to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). This data is then included as part of the information used to determine how much Higher Education and Innovation Funding (HEIF) BU receives. Table 5 of the survey captures data about social, community and cultural events intended for the external community.

We want to ensure BU’s public engagement with external audiences is fully represented, so we are starting the data collection earlier than usual. To upload your data, please go to the SharePoint site. The form will stay open for you to add your activities until the end of Friday 7 October 2022. We encourage you to add your new data regularly throughout the year, while the details are easily recalled.

We’re holding two online sessions for BU staff to find out more about REF 2021.

As well as an overview of the REF and BU’s submission and results, you’ll also be able to hear from some of our Unit of Assessment (UOA) leads about their areas and future research and impact strategies. There will also be the opportunity to ask questions.

NCCPE/NERC Events: Develop skills in public engagement with environmental research

Environmental Engagement in Practice: An interactive events programme

Given the current environmental crises the world is facing, the importance of engaging the public with environmental research has never been higher. High-quality inclusive environmental engagement can raise awareness, build knowledge, and inspire action and change.

Funded by Natural Environment Research Council , the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement has developed the Environmental Engagement in Practice programme, a series of free day-long events, exploring themes for public engagement with environmental research.

The events will bring people across the sector together, from researchers and policy makers to creative and community practitioners, to learn and share ideas. Each event is tailored around a specific theme, informed by the Insights Report published earlier this year.

The first event will take place on Wednesday 25 May 2022 and will focus on practical skills that support public engagement. Registration for this event is now open.

Wednesday 25 May, 10am-4pm
This event will focus on practical skills that support public engagement work. All delegates will have the opportunity to participate in an inclusive engagement session, and then choose from a range of practical skills workshops including working with schools, working with policy makers, and creative storytelling.

Ethics of engagement and dealing with controversy (save the date)
Tuesday 6 September, 10am-4pm
This event will explore the ethical considerations needed to do engagement well. Through case studies and discussion, delegates will have the opportunity to explore the nature of controversy, and how these can be managed in an appropriate way. This session will include a reflection on what people value and how values play out when working alongside others.

Evaluation, sustainability and making a case (save the date)
Thursday 12 January 2023, 10am-4pm
This event covers three main challenges for those seeing to embed engagement into their work: how to evaluate your programme effectively; if and how to sustain your work; and how to advocate for the value of engagement within your research. These separate but interlinked challenges will be explored through interactive workshops, reflective sessions, and panel discussions.

Who can attend?

These events are intended for anyone working with environmental research with an interest in engagement and knowledge exchange, particularly those who are keen to develop or enhance their public engagement practices.

This includes:

Environmental researchers at any career level
Policy makers working with environmental research / researchers
Creative and community practitioners working with environmental research
Others who can demonstrate a connection with environmental research to their work

People at all levels of engagement experience, including those who are just starting out are welcome to attend.

ESRC Festival of Social Science is an annual, UK-wide, free celebration of the social sciences, planned to take place from 22 October – 13 November 2022. BU have been involved in the festival for over a decade, running our own internal selection process and delivering up to ten activities per year.

ESRC Festival 2022 Theme

The theme set by the ESRC for this year’s festival is ‘my local area’’ and the ESRC wants to see at least a quarter of festival events based on this. This could be an exploration of Dorset’s social and economic history, the future of Bournemouth High Street, issues around deprivation in coastal towns or rural isolation. The theme is linked to the place-based agenda, which is a priority area for ESRC and UKRI. We encourage you to think broadly around this and we are happy for you to decide how far away you consider ‘local’ to be.

Who can apply?

The festival aims to encourage, support and create opportunities for social science researchers to engage with non-academic audiences. It is a prestigious initiative by a major research funder, and BU’s continued involvement is justified by the quality of events and activities. Being part of this festival is an achievement worth citing and celebrating.

It is an excellent opportunity to engage people outside of academia with your research and with the benefit of co-ordinated support and promotion from RDS and the ESRC.

Events must “feature social science (ideally with a social scientist involved in the event)”. If this doesn’t clearly apply to you, consider these options;

Does your research have clear implications for society that could be explored from a social science perspective?
Could you collaborate with a social scientist, combining your resources and creativity to explore the impact of your research? If you’re looking for a collaborator, the Research Blog or BU website are great places to start or contact us for help.

What support is available?

Before applying, you will have access to:

Public Engagement Funding Opportunity: Engaging the public with environmental science 2022

Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) second round of Growing Roots (annual funding opportunity) has launched.

Apply for funding to develop new ways to engage the public with environmental science. This opportunity aims to support public engagement with environmental science research.

Projects must be delivered between 25 July 2022 and 28 February 2023.

The full economic cost of your project can be between £5,000 and £10,000.

The deadline for applications is Wednesday 18 May 2022, 4pm
