Are you a social sciences researcher looking for a high-profile opportunity to put on a public engagement event as part of a national festival?

Would you like the chance to receive up to £1,000 funding for your project?

We will shortly be opening the call for applications to take part in this year’s ESRC Festival of Social Science, which runs from 19^th October to 9^th November, under the theme ‘Our Digital Lives’.

Key dates:

17 April, 11:00-12:00: online information session for potential applicants (platform TBC)
16 May: deadline for applications

For the second year, BU is partnering with the University of Southampton (UoS) and we are particularly keen to hear from researchers who have already established collaborations with UoS colleagues and may wish to run a joint event.

The festival and our partnership with UoS offers the chance to create an inspiring event which enables you to connect your research in a highly-accessible and engaging way with a broad public audience.

At this stage, we encourage you to familiarise yourself with the ESRC requirements for the festival, and get in touch with any colleagues at UoS who may be interested in running a joint event.

Café Scientifique Tuesday 2 April 2024 – Should we help machines understand and respond to our emotions?

At Café Scientifique, you can explore the latest ideas in science and technology in a relaxed setting. Enjoy listening to a short talk before engaging in debate and discussion with our guest speaker and audience

We’ll be joined by Dr Roya Haratian on Tuesday 2 April from 6:30 – 8:00pm.

Assistive technology in the home is increasingly part of everyday life. To improve the experience for people who use it, researchers are looking at ways to improve machines’ ability to adapt to human emotions. But does this also have its disadvantages?

Join Dr Roya Haratian, electronics scientist from Bournemouth University, to explore how research in this area can improve the way machines adapt to users’ experience, and also address the concerns it raises.

This event will be held at The Black Cherry in Boscombe, Bournemouth. Although the talks start at 6:30pm, the café will be open early so we encourage you to arrive early for a drink and a bite to eat before the talk starts.

We are all told to bid, to ensure that bidding for research funding is a normal part of academic life. This is especially the case for those in, or moving into, research leadership roles. But, where and how do you start? What are the key points to consider? How do you develop competitive ideas and what are the key ingredients in developing a bid? In this session we draw on the expertise of an external consultant, Dr Stephen Kemp, and BU’s Professor Michael Silk to explore the key elements to consider when thinking about leading the development of a project for funding. Particular emphasis will be based on:

Demystifying bidding, research leadership & project development through the lens of funding applications: developing research questions, choosing partners, incorporating impact and more
The key ingredients for (and the ‘balancing act’ of) leading the development of a project for funding
The lived experience (and successes and failures, challenges and benefits) of leading the development of a funded project (at BU!)
Using the RASCI matrix and GANTT charts

Would you like to share your research with a public audience? Get involved with our Café Scientifique series

Café Scientifique is a public event that takes place at The Black Cherry in Boscombe on the first Tuesday evening of the month (excluding January & August), and is organised centrally by the BU Public Engagement with Research Team, part of Research Development and Support.

The format involves delivering a short talk, followed by the opportunity for discussion and questions from a varied public audience. It is a fantastic opportunity for you to gain experience in engaging with the public in a friendly relaxed atmosphere.

We welcome academics at all career stages, although this opportunity is particularly valuable for those getting started in engaging with the public. We encourage collaboration between less experienced and more experienced public speakers to help provide support and gain a rewarding learning experience.

The team will support you every step of the way. From developing your ideas to engage with a public audience, to setting up and promoting your event. We will also be on hand on the day to help your event run smoothly.

To be considered for inclusion, your event or activity must be;

Focused on BU research, either solely or as part of a wider programme. Events or activities that do not involve BU research, such as marketing or recruitment events, will not be accepted.
Intended for and open to non-academic audiences, either entirely or as a portion of the audience.
Submitted, at the latest, in the first two weeks of the month preceding the event. For example, an event taking place in June should be submitted via the form any time before 14 May.

Event descriptions may be edited for consistency in style with other content.

Join experts from Konfer for a Faculty-specific session, offering a guided tour of the platform and support to set up your profile or your Research Centre page for powerful research and knowledge exchange connections.

Konfer offers an efficient way to navigate around resources, technology and innovation capabilities that exist in the UK innovation eco-system. Through Konfer, you can discover and engage with experts beyond your typical reach and discuss new ideas and opportunities for projects.

This is an opportunity to meet with the Konfer team, have a guided tour of the platform and its full functionality, enabling you to create and connect to the UK research collaborations with other universities, businesses and other organisations. By the end of your session you will have set up your own profile, with guidance and support from Ranbir and Shivaun from Konfer, and be ready to post or respond to collaboration opportunities.

As well as a Faculty specific session, you can also attend the Konfer Drop-In Surgery in the afternoon.

The Coffee and Konfer event will take place on Wednesday 20 March 2024. The faculty specific sessions will take place from 9am. Rooms to be confirmed.

Paramedics have the worst wellbeing of all healthcare professionals, and the newly-qualified are particularly vulnerable. But it is not necessarily for the obvious reasons of dealing with traumatic events.

Join Bournemouth University’s Peter Phillips, a senior lecturer in paramedic science, to hear how his research about identity among newly qualified paramedics could help make them more resilient.

Are you passionate about sharing your work in STEM? Do you want to capture the imagination when explaining your love of science? Join the team behind New Scientist Live to discover the secrets behind the UK’s biggest science show.

In this free lunchtime virtual event, host Martin Davies (Head of Event Production, New Scientist) will welcome science communicator and engagement consultant Dr Jamie Gallagher, as he reveals how to prepare memorable talks and interactive stands that leave a lasting impression. Martin will also be joined by colleague Jacqui Mccarron, as they explore what they look for when inviting speakers and selecting exhibitors for New Scientist Live.

Jamie Gallagher is an award-winning freelance communicator and engagement professional with ten years’ experience in the delivery and evaluation of quality engagement projects. Working across dozens of institutions and subject areas he has helped improve the reach, profile and impact of research engagement in almost every discipline. Jamie is also a science communicator and can often be found on TV, radio or stage making research accessible.

New Scientist Live 2024: Call for Speakers and Exhibitors

New Scientist Live is a three-day science festival and exhibition that combines the best of in-person and virtual events. Connecting a global online audience with face-to-face visitors, speakers and dozens of exhibitors for talks, discussions and hands-on demonstrations.

New Scientist Live will take place from 12-14 October 2024 at ExCeL London.

The organisers are looking for new voices and ideas to inform, inspire and surprise audiences. If you’ve got an idea for a talk at New Scientist Live, please complete this Nomination Form with your ideas. There is no limit on the number of nominations.

Nominations close at 23:59 on Wednesday 31 January 2024

They are also looking for new and exciting exhibitors for their show floor. Do you have an idea for an interactive stand, where visitors to the show can get hands-on with leading-edge science, and talk to researchers forging the future? Do you have an idea to engage public audiences with science and research?

Event proposals for the British Science Festival 2024 are open.

The British Science Festival will take place in East London from Wednesday 11 – Sunday 15 September 2024, and will be hosted by the University of East London.

The programme showcases cutting-edge science, technology, and ideas that challenge, inspire and excite audiences. Each year, thousands of people come together to celebrate the latest developments in research and engage in open discussion about issues affecting our culture and society.

Anyone can propose an event and the festival celebrates science in its broadest sense. The British Science Festival are looking for proposals from individuals, researchers, industry professionals, artists, writers, organisations, charities, academic institutions, and more. They aim to programme a range of formats from talks to drop-in activities and creative content that challenges perceptions of what science is and can be.

The festival is free and open to all, but content should be appropriate for an adult (16+ audience).
