Join a BU online event this Friday lunchtime on challenging the stigma around exercising with epilepsy

Exercising with Epilepsy, Friday 29th July, 12.30pm, online

Join psychology lecturer Dr Sarah Collard at a free online event this Friday to hear how her research is challenging the assumptions around exercising with epilepsy. Dr Collard was awarded ACORN funding to explore the physical activity levels of people with epilepsy in the UK. The project aimed to:

Establish self-reported physical activity and levels of sedentary behaviour.
Obtain epilepsy-related factors and socio-demographic information.
Investigate the associations between epilepsy-related factors, socio-demographics, and physical activity.

In the online discussion, Dr Collard will outline her findings so far, which will provide important data for people with epilepsy and their families and carers, as well as medical professionals and those working in the fitness and leisure sector.

Keep telling us about all your social, cultural and community events – reporting period ends soon

We are collecting details of all events for external audiences taking place between 1 August 2021 and 31 July 2022

Thank you to everyone who has already provided information via the SharePoint site. The deadline for reporting is Friday 7 October 2022.

This data forms part of BU’s annual Higher Education – Business & Community Interaction survey and is used to calculate our Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF) grant. It also feeds into our submission to the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) so it is really important for us to provide a full and accurate picture of all our public engagement.

Which events do I need to report?

Public lectures & talks
Performance arts (music, dance, drama etc)
Exhibitions (galleries, museums etc)
Museum education
Media engagement (TV/radio interviews, podcasts etc)

If you’re not sure if your event is eligible for inclusion, the SharePoint site includes further details and guidance.

We collect a wider range of data than is required for HE-BCI, for additional external and internal reporting, e.g. HEIF Annual Monitoring Statement and Athena Swan. For the purposes of the HE-BCI survey, you must record the following:

the number of attendees (or views/visitors)
the amount of staff time in hours needed for delivery.

Without this specific data, we will not be able to include your event in the survey.

India @ 75 – a conference from BU on 22 July

About this event

The workshop INDIA@75 celebrates the 75th anniversary of Indian independence and the myriad facets of the UK-India bilateral relationship, which is poised at a critical point this year with the Free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations going ahead towards a Diwali timeline.

The workshop also examines the growing role and importance of India at the Commonwealth and the multilateral level at the WTO. The FTA talks are expected to the central to the wide ranging deliberations and interactions but will also touch on the trade and economic exchanges that touch on all areas of lives from the cultural and creative collaboration in crucial sectors such as climate change, healthcare, technology, innovation and much more, with the Indian diaspora in the UK acting as the living bridge of this deep bond.

For this event, the keynote speakers and members of the panel include specialists from international trade, UN Sustainable Development Goals and IB fields. The workshop will include both academics and practitioners, and provide meaningful insight and impact, for fusing policy, business and trade within the context of ever growing UK-India relationship.

We also invite researchers, doctoral research students and collaborators, who will pick up key themes and findings from the workshop, to attend and facilitate research culminating in a series of Policy Briefs and research papers for submission to appropriate 3-star journals.

Refreshments will be provided, including lunch.

Sharing your research with the public at Café Scientifique – Sept onwards

If you’re interested in sharing your scientific research with a friendly public audience – complete our form.

We’re currently organising our series of Café Scientifique events for Sept 2022 – July 2023 and we’re looking for people interested in getting involved. Café Scientifique is a public event format, popular around the world, where anyone can come along to explore the latest research in science and technology in a casual café setting. Following a short presentation by a researcher, there is plenty of time for questions and discussion from a varied public audience.

Taking place on a weekday evening, Café Scientifique events run monthly from June (excepting August and January). They’re organised centrally by the BU Public Engagement with Research Team, part of Research Development and Support (RDS). It’s a fantastic opportunity to get experience in engaging with the public in a friendly atmosphere and gain surprising insights into your own work.

We welcome academics at all career stages, although this is particularly valuable for those just getting started in engaging with the public. We also encourage collaboration between less experienced and more experienced public speakers – to provide a valuable learning experience with the support to keep things going smoothly.

Regarding your research – although we use a broad definition of ‘science’, the audience do have certain expectations from the name, so we do not tend to feature research outside of the broad ‘science’ theme.

Whether we will be able to host your talk, and at the time you want, depends on several factors including the subject matter, timing and other events, so completing this form does not guarantee you will be able to take part. If everything does align, we will be in touch to invite you to speak at an upcoming event.

Other ways to get involved

We’re looking to involve a wider range of people from across BU to make our Café Scientifique series a success and a true BU community project. As well as speaking, you could get involved in a number of flexible ways;

Hosting events – every Cafe Sci event needs a host – to welcome the audience, introduce the speakers and keep the questions flowing. This is a great opportunity for someone to develop skills and experience interacting with the public, as well as being an enjoyable way to meet other people.
Helping to organise events – whether it’s finding speakers, helping polish a presentation, promoting these events far and wide and more – we’d welcome any BU staff or students who’d like to help out with various bits behind the scenes on these events. This is a great way to dip your toes in the world of public engagement, gain experience in organising events and work on a fun project with others across BU.

Start reporting your data for events with external audiences

We are now collecting information for the annual Higher Education – Business & Community Interaction (HE-BCI) survey. Summer Science Exhibition 2023 call for proposals is now open

Apply now to showcase your research at the Royal Society’s Summer Science Exhibition next summer.

The Royal Society is looking for researchers to take part in their flagship event celebrating the cutting-edge of UK science.

Taking place in July 2023, the Exhibition provides an excellent opportunity to engage a variety of audiences with your research, including members of the public, school groups, policy makers and potential funders and fellows of the Royal Society. Each year, they welcome thousands of visitors through their doors and reach many more through national coverage on TV or in the media.

It’s a great opportunity to raise the profile of UK research and gain valuable experience communicating with diverse audience groups. The Royal Society also helps applicants every step of the way, from guidance on submitting a proposal to preparing and coordinating an exhibit.

Professor Feigenbaum and her team launch guide on social media storytelling for health literacy

Creating social media posts that aim to build health or information literacy is challenging. It is one thing to get likes on a video of a cute dog dancing or your latest holiday pics, it is another to develop reflective, empathetic understanding of complex phenomena in a bite-sized image or video.

To help guide people through the process of creating social media stories for information and health literacy, Professor Feigenbaum designed the Pick N Mix strategy. This Pick N Mix method is based on research findings from her team’s UKRI/AHRC COVID-19 Rapid Response project that analysed over 15,000 webcomics to look at the role this medium played in public health messaging on Instagram during the first year of the pandemic. The guide also draws from current research in psychology, graphic medicine and media studies. It was designed by creative studio partners Minute Works.

On 10th June 2022 Professor Feigenbaum and her team of BU student RAs — Katie Penfound, Kristy Hart, Linh Trinh and Abbie Smith — launched the new guide during a training workshop for stakeholders delivered to project partners from University Hospitals Dorset, CILIP The Library and Information Association and CEMP’s EdD programme.

The guide and stakeholder training session are set to make a meaningful impact, already getting great feedback from stakeholders.

Reaching out to a wider audience, on 14 June 2022, Professor Feigenbaum and BU alumni Ozlem Demirkol Tonnesen, an AHRC project RA and PhD Candidate at the University of Southampton, published a piece for The Conversation’s Quarter Life series, translating their storytelling strategies for social media content creators in their 20s and 30s.

Professor Feigenbaum and her team’s research on social media storytelling for health literacy will feature later this year at the British Science Festival. British Academy Writing Workshop in Nepal: Call for participants

We are inviting expressions of interest for Nepal-based academic with an interest in gender and development issue to participate in our Writing Workshop: “Promoting Publishing in the field of Gender and Development in Nepal”. Bournemouth University is leading two separate three-day workshops for early career researchers (ECRs) working across various universities in Nepal to encourage and support them to publish in peer reviewed journals in the field of social sciences, in Kathmandu (from 17-19 August 2022), and in Pokhara (from 21-23 August 2022). The funding for these exciting workshop is provided by the British Academy.

There will be a mixture of presentations, group discussion and other interactive exercises, and independent writing exercises. The workshop involves practical sessions to help attendees to make their research idea clear and compelling to reviewers, and finalise their papers for publications. One-to-one sessions with our expert advisers will allow attendees to work through different aspects of their own research papers, methods and ideas.

How to apply: If you are an ECR based in Nepal and have some idea (or/and data) to work towards publication in gender and development, then please send us:

A short CV – 3 pages maximum;
An abstract or summary of the proposed paper you wish to develop through the writing workshop- (300 words maximum) by 30^thJune 2022.

Female ECRs are highly encouraged to apply. Please use Subject British Academy Writing Workshop 2022 and email to sdhakaladhikari@bournemouth.ac.uk, with a copy to both: pregmi@bournemouth.ac.uk and rashmi.rajkarnikar@cdec.tu.edu.np . The faciliators will inform you about your selection for the workshop by the middle of July 2022. Selected participants will be asked to to submit their first rough draft by 3rd August, so that this can be discussed further during the workshop (17-19 August 2022).

The Writing Workshop facilitators are three BU scholars, Dr Shovita Dhakal Adhikari, in the Department of Social Sciences & Social Work, Dr. Pramod Regmi in the Department of Nursing Sciences, and Prof. Edwin van Teijlingen in the Department of Midwifery & Health Science in collaboration with Dr. Rashmee Rajkarnikar, at Nepal’s oldest and largest university, namely Tribhuvan University.

What is HE-BCI?

The Higher Education – Business & Community Interaction (HE-BCI) survey is a mandatory annual return that BU makes to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). This data is then included as part of the information used to determine how much Higher Education and Innovation Funding (HEIF) BU receives. Table 5 of the survey captures data about social, community and cultural events intended for the external community.

We want to ensure BU’s public engagement with external audiences is fully represented, so we are starting the data collection earlier than usual. To upload your data, please go to the SharePoint site. The form will stay open for you to add your activities until the end of Friday 7 October 2022. We encourage you to add your new data regularly throughout the year, while the details are easily recalled.

Paramedic science book launch this Friday

Coming Friday the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences has the pleasure of hosting the official launch of a new Mental Health Care in Paramedic Practice written by BU’s Dr. Ursula Rolfe and Mr. David Partlow, Somerset County Council Adult Social Care Strategic Manager. The launch will take place in the Bournemouth Gateway Building at noon on May 6th in room BGB 302.

Mental Health Care in Paramedic Practice is the first guide written specifically to support paramedics in understanding a range of different mental health conditions in their practice. This new book provides essential information on recognising and managing a range of conditions. It offers case studies written by paramedics with first-hand experience of managing mental health issues, and includes a section on legal changes and policy descriptions as well as on the importance of interprofessional working. One of the online reviewers declared that this is an important read for Emergency Medical Service staff.

NCCPE/NERC Events: Develop skills in public engagement with environmental research

Environmental Engagement in Practice: An interactive events programme

Given the current environmental crises the world is facing, the importance of engaging the public with environmental research has never been higher. High-quality inclusive environmental engagement can raise awareness, build knowledge, and inspire action and change.

Funded by Natural Environment Research Council , the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement has developed the Environmental Engagement in Practice programme, a series of free day-long events, exploring themes for public engagement with environmental research.

The events will bring people across the sector together, from researchers and policy makers to creative and community practitioners, to learn and share ideas. Each event is tailored around a specific theme, informed by the Insights Report published earlier this year.

The first event will take place on Wednesday 25 May 2022 and will focus on practical skills that support public engagement. Registration for this event is now open.

Wednesday 25 May, 10am-4pm
This event will focus on practical skills that support public engagement work. All delegates will have the opportunity to participate in an inclusive engagement session, and then choose from a range of practical skills workshops including working with schools, working with policy makers, and creative storytelling.

Ethics of engagement and dealing with controversy (save the date)
Tuesday 6 September, 10am-4pm
This event will explore the ethical considerations needed to do engagement well. Through case studies and discussion, delegates will have the opportunity to explore the nature of controversy, and how these can be managed in an appropriate way. This session will include a reflection on what people value and how values play out when working alongside others.

Evaluation, sustainability and making a case (save the date)
Thursday 12 January 2023, 10am-4pm
This event covers three main challenges for those seeing to embed engagement into their work: how to evaluate your programme effectively; if and how to sustain your work; and how to advocate for the value of engagement within your research. These separate but interlinked challenges will be explored through interactive workshops, reflective sessions, and panel discussions.

Who can attend?

These events are intended for anyone working with environmental research with an interest in engagement and knowledge exchange, particularly those who are keen to develop or enhance their public engagement practices.

This includes:

Environmental researchers at any career level
Policy makers working with environmental research / researchers
Creative and community practitioners working with environmental research
Others who can demonstrate a connection with environmental research to their work

People at all levels of engagement experience, including those who are just starting out are welcome to attend.

Open Call Reminder: ESRC Festival 2022 – Deadline for applications Friday 29 April

Funding of up to £1,000 available to deliver your event or activity.

ESRC Festival of Social Science is an annual, UK-wide, free celebration of the social sciences, planned to take place from 22 October – 13 November 2022. BU have been involved in the festival for over a decade, running our own internal selection process and delivering up to ten activities per year.

ESRC Festival 2022 Theme

The theme set by the ESRC for this year’s festival is ‘my local area’’ and the ESRC wants to see at least a quarter of festival events based on this. This could be an exploration of Dorset’s social and economic history, the future of Bournemouth High Street, issues around deprivation in coastal towns or rural isolation. The theme is linked to the place-based agenda, which is a priority area for ESRC and UKRI. We encourage you to think broadly around this and we are happy for you to decide how far away you consider ‘local’ to be.

Who can apply?

The festival aims to encourage, support and create opportunities for social science researchers to engage with non-academic audiences. It is a prestigious initiative by a major research funder, and BU’s continued involvement is justified by the quality of events and activities. Being part of this festival is an achievement worth citing and celebrating.

It is an excellent opportunity to engage people outside of academia with your research and with the benefit of co-ordinated support and promotion from RDS and the ESRC.

Events must “feature social science (ideally with a social scientist involved in the event)”. If this doesn’t clearly apply to you, consider these options;

ESRC Festival Open Call: Deadline for applications Friday 29 April. Funding of up to £1,000 is available to deliver your event or activity

ESRC Festival of Social Science is an annual, UK-wide, free celebration of the social sciences, planned to take place from 22 October – 13 November 2022. BU have been involved in the festival for over a decade, running our own internal selection process and delivering up to ten activities per year.

ESRC Festival 2022 Theme

The theme set by the ESRC for this year’s festival is ‘my local area’’ and the ESRC wants to see at least a quarter of festival events based on this. This could be an exploration of Dorset’s social and economic history, the future of Bournemouth High Street, issues around deprivation in coastal towns or rural isolation. The theme is linked to the place-based agenda, which is a priority area for ESRC and UKRI. We encourage you to think broadly around this and we are happy for you to decide how far away you consider ‘local’ to be.

Who can apply?

The festival aims to encourage, support and create opportunities for social science researchers to engage with non-academic audiences. It is a prestigious initiative by a major research funder, and BU’s continued involvement is justified by the quality of events and activities. Being part of this festival is an achievement worth citing and celebrating.

It is an excellent opportunity to engage people outside of academia with your research and with the benefit of co-ordinated support and promotion from RDS and the ESRC.

Events must “feature social science (ideally with a social scientist involved in the event)”. If this doesn’t clearly apply to you, consider these options;

Does your research have clear implications for society that could be explored from a social science perspective?
Could you collaborate with a social scientist, combining your resources and creativity to explore the impact of your research? If you’re looking for a collaborator, the Research Blog or BU website are great places to start or contact us for help.

GRCF supported migration and health workshop in Nepal

Earlier this week Bournemouth University (BU) ran the ‘Migration and Health Research Capacity Building Workshop for Early Career Researchers’ in Kathmandu. The organisation of this two-day event was jointly with the University of Huddersfield, Manmohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences (MMIHS) in Kathmandu and the charity Green Tara Nepal. The event was part of the BU-led Health Research Network for Migrant Workers in Asia whose formation was supported two years ago by GCRF (Global Challenges Research Fund). The workshop plan was designed by BU’s Dr. Pramod Regmi and Dr. Nirmal Aryal. Our recently started FHSS PhD student Yagya Adhikari and Prof. Edwin van Teijlingen also contributed to the workshop in Kathmandu. Yagya spoke about his PhD which focuses on ‘Parental migration and its impact on the health and well-being of left-behind adolescents in Nepal’.

Further contributions to the workshop were from former BU PhD student Dr. Pratik Adhikary (now working for PHASE Nepal) and two of our academic colleagues from the University of Huddersfield: Dr. Sharada Prasad Wasti and Prof. Padam Simkhada. Prof. Simkhada is also Visiting Professor in FHSS.

Three BU co-presentations at this years BNAC Study Day

This year’s BNAC (Britain-Nepal Academic Council) Study Days are hosted by the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Oxford. The Study Days are held today (14th April) and yesterday. BNAC promotes academic and scholarly links between Britain and Nepal through, among other things, collaborative research, exchange programmes, and the organisation of annual lectures, and seminars on areas of mutual interest to both British and Nepali academics and researchers.

Three presentations at this two-day event are co-produced by BU colleagues.
