Dr. Dinusha Mendis, Senior Lecturer in Law and Co-Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and Management has featured in recent articles, interviews and guest talks for her research into 3D printing and its implications for Intellectual Property (IP) Laws.
Her research in this area led to an interview for the United Nations Agency, World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Geneva, for their prestigious magazine the World Intellectual Property Review (WIPR). Dr. Mendis was featured in the article ‘The Shape of things to Come: 3D Printing’ published on 1 May 2013. In this article, Dr. Mendis suggests that in looking to the future and in adapting to 3D printing, businesses should look to market-driven business models—for example, by setting up an iTunes-style store for spare product parts, or by licensing 3D files more widely. It is important for businesses to ‘adapt’ to this new technology and ‘adopt’ new business models.
Also during the month of May, Dr. Mendis was invited by the Open Rights Group, London to write for their magazine ORGZine, on 3D Printing and its implications for IP Laws. The article titled ‘Unravelling 3D Printing and Intellectual Property Laws: From Napster to Thingiverse and Beyond‘ was published on 21 May 2013.
On the 28th May 2013, Dr. Mendis was invited to speak at the University of Glasgow, at an event organised by CREATe titled ‘Conversations in Copyright’. At this event, Dr. Mendis was invited to speak about her research into 3D Printing with a specific focus on copyright law.
At present, Dr. Mendis is in the process of authoring a paper on 3D Printing with a specific focus on copyright which will be published in autumn. She will also be presenting her research into 3D Printing and IP Law at the Festival of Learning on Thursday 6th June and Tuesday 11th June 2013.
Dr. Mendis is the author of ‘Clone Wars’: Episode 1 – The Rise of 3D Printing and its Implications for Intellectual Property Law’ which was published in a 3-star journal and was followed by an interview for the BBC Radio 5 Live in February 2013. In April 2013, Dr. Mendis spoke on the topic at the 28th BILETA Conference at the University of Liverpool and was interviewed by the organisers about her research in this area.

For BU academics this is a great opportunity to get critical appraisal on your research papers or ideas from colleagues. For academics it also an opportunity to encourage the submission of high quality student output, and possibly to facilitate the co-creation and co-production of publishable material to an external journal or to publish externally with eBU. For students, this is a fantastic opportunity to turn high quality essays or dissertations into scholarly outputs, which will be attractive to employers across many sectors and industries.

From different schools; 4 of us thought to write a small piece of what engagement means to us. Some of it does mean answering a quiz on Europe armed with Pizza & beer during a screening of Eurovision and talking over stages of thesis, procrastination, Facebook™ status’ and the ultimate Frisbee design. But additionally it means attending a cross-school conference and see how other students plan their work and research: are they super recognisers? Is someone pregnancy’s sleep different than someone’s who isn’t? Having to buy misoprostol in Nepal with your supervisor and listen to instructions on abortion. Or getting counselling during the PGRep meetings, teaching to undergraduates and demystifying academic jargon, pardon I mean research language! We give you their stories:
For me as a student in HSC I sum my ‘story’ here – It’s raining, cold and seems like summer won’t come to Bournemouth…but as a PGR student my definition is engagement is …”does it in the rain”! Bracing the sun and…Then the rain…while advertising Bournemouth University Festival of Learning Poole High Street. I spent two days talking about research in Nepal under the rain and it felt a bit like Waiting for the Monsoon in Poole! Using photos to make the passer-byes guess why a sickle is used during childbirth; and how health promotion improves health and wellbeing.
The day made for a good dry run for our events that will take place during the 3-14 June 2013 BU’s Festival of Learning; with a 100 events to choose from mastering social media, see if you are a super-recogniser. Also some of the ‘tough’ questions on culture and health in low-income countries helps with the reflective part of the thesis. Finally reducing that gap between the ivory tower of research and the public and in that reminded yourself why you do it…in the rain.

Never forget a face? Some people don’t, some people do after enough time has passed, while others can’t remember it in the first place. I have spent the past 8 months in the dark, lonely eye-tracking lab listening to various stories and exploring the ability that most of us take for granted – face recognition, using a small camera to record movements of peoples’ pupils.
For me, engagement is about raising awareness about how much we all differ in face recognition ability and why is it important that it should be taken into consideration in education and recruitment. Giving talks, presenting a poster, or engaging with public during forthcoming Festival of Learning all present excellent opportunities to disseminate my research, make me a better academic, and help people to understand face blindness and super-recognition. After all, unless on a lonely island, faces accompany us from the day we are born and throughout our whole life! So are you a super-recogniser?

It’s 6pm, and I‘m looking forward to getting home for a cup of tea. But before my day is done, I have a young lady with long brown hair sat in front of me, and, as we’re chatting about life, I am separating parts of her hair and sticking electrodes onto her head and face – which will be analysing her brain activity during her sleep. All in a day’s work, as my research has been exploring the way in which women sleep during their pregnancy, in comparison to non-pregnant women, and whether this relates to the development of postnatal depression. For me, engagement is about reminding myself of the value and purpose of my research.
Whether, it is arranging a coffee morning to thank all of the pregnant women that kindly volunteered to take part in my demanding study; getting out of my comfort zone and presenting my research at international conferences; or helping to train health visitors on important issues surrounding my research. It is about feeling that I am contributing to the bigger picture and making a small (but significant!) difference, as well as establishing myself as a researcher.
I do feel for my study participants as it can be a different night than they are used to!

Volunteering to deliver a talk about my PhD on value co-creation at music and arts festivals during SUBU ‘Arrivals Week’ 2012, I tried to show to an audience of first years how fun PhD research at the School of Tourism can be. Last summer I visited five festivals where I observed and undertook a large number of interviews, to find out something about the social aspect of festival experiences. So, I thought, this is engagement – talking about my fieldwork and sharing some preliminary findings with a group of people who go to festivals every year, but perhaps never quite thought about them the way I do. But the slides of me in my wellies wading through the muddy festival site triggered memories of being hugged by a couple of elderly half-naked tattooed space-rock fans, listening to poetry, relaxing with a pint of really nice ale (after all the interviews were done, of course) and most importantly, talking to people.
One person in particular stuck in my mind. I sat down next to David in a quiet corner of a beautiful rose garden at a storytelling festival and we started to chat. I told him what I was doing and was really surprised when he insisted my researched seemed very worthwhile! His enthusiasm gave me a huge confidence boost but more importantly, got me thinking about the wider social and cultural implications of my research. So for me, engagement is… about learning rather than just telling and teaching. It is about dialogue, challenging my own ideas and letting others help to shape the research.

Dr Zulfiqar Khan is leading Sustainable Design Research Centre (SDRC) as Director. He has interests in nano-materials/tech, tribology, durability of interacting systems through surface engineering, corrosion, corrosion simulation and modelling, design and development of mechanical current turbines and alternative energy technologies. SDRC has developed a significant portfolio of research (fully funded/match funded research projects), education (UG Design Engineering live projects) and professional practice (joint collaborative industrial projects, engagement with professional institutions/forums) within Renewable Energy & Renewable Technology.
Panel Host: Professor Mark Hadfield
Deputy Dean Research, Enterprise & Internationalisation
Professor Mark Hadfield has been the Deputy Dean REI for almost five years and a Professor at Bournemouth for ten years. During the last five years he has led research within the School which includes Computing, Psychology and Engineering at a period of changing academic emphasis. He joined Bournemouth University in 1997 as a Senior Lecturer teaching Materials and Manufacture and also started an MSc programme in the area of sustainable product design. During this period he has received grants from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, The Royal Academy of Engineering, international research centres, charities and industry.
Panel Member: Dr Janet Dickinson
Senior Lecturer School of Tourism
Dr Janet Dickinson is Senior Lecturer in the School of Tourism. She is a geographer with an interest in travel and transport practices. Her work has focused on leisure and tourism travel and has explored the concept of ‘slow travel’.
Her current EPSRC funded research project, 6th Sense Transport (www.sixthsensetransport.com), focuses on the use of mobile media to facilitate more fluid and collaborative travel among communities of users to reduce the carbon footprint of travel.
Panel Member: Dr Nigel Garland
Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Technology
School of Design Engineering and Computing
A member of the Sustainable Design Research Centre, Nigel’s areas of interest include tribology and sustainable system design. He has developed new technical models in the area beyond the “eco-design” philosophies of environmental and economic impacts to focus upon the long term success of projects through social usefulness and effective resource utilisation.
Panel Member: Paul Cooling
Paul Cooling BSc(Hons) DMS IEng MIET PBEA NDEA RN
Borough of Poole Carbon Reduction Manager
Paul is the Council’s Carbon Reduction Manager and since 2008 has successfully led the Borough of Poole’s carbon management programme to reduce the Council’s carbon emissions from building and operations by 25% over a 5 year period. Through the development and implementation of carbon saving projects such as voltage optimisation, biomass boiler, electric Pool(e) cars and part-night street lighting, savings of some 900 t/CO2 and £280,000 have been realised. Paul’s role has expanded to reducing the Borough of Poole’s carbon emissions and in 2012 the Council signed up to the European Covenant of Mayors, pledging to reduce the Boroughs’ emissions in excess of 20% by 2020 through partnership working with local business’ and the community. Through this role and as a Director of Poole Tidal Energy Partnership, Paul has co-managed course placements for approximately 30 students from Bournemouth University Business School, Applied Sciences and Design Engineering Computing.

Richard Cherry, BSc (Hons), CEng, MICE, MCIWEM, MIHT
Managing Director Vergas
Richard Cherry, graduating in 1967 and a Chartered Civil Engineer since 1972, has worked in the field of anaerobic digestion, and in particular in the engineering of installations to contain and control biogas derived therefrom, since 1987. He has been a Director, and latterly Managing Director and co-owner, of various companies since then, either designing, building and commissioning anaerobic digestion plants, mainly for Water Companies and Water Utilities, treating wastewater sludges; or designing and manufacturing double-membrane biogas containment systems.
Richard sits on the Wastewater Panel of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, and has a particular interest in the value and use of biogas in the generation of energy.

The Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and Management (CIPPM) held its third Spring Lecture on Thursday 25th April 2013. This was CIPPM’s opportunity to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day (IP Day) 2013; a day for celebrating and promoting intellectual property and creativity.
Dr. Nicholas Saunders of Brick Court Chambers was the Guest Speaker at this event. Dr. Saunders specialises in commercial, EU and intellectual property law. His intellectual property experience has included being involved in major patent disputes such as Nichia v Seoul Semiconductors, Interdigital v Nokia and Nokia v IPCOM, confidential information cases involving departing employees, trade mark infringement cases such as Jacobson v Globe, and numerous copyright and designs cases. He has particular expertise in the relationship between competition law and intellectual property and in cases involving conflict of laws issues. 
Dr. Saunders gave an interesting and thought provoking lecture titled “Litigation of patents essential to technical standards – what is the future for patent trolls”? He discussed the relationship between competition law and patent law, then told tales of patent trolls; revealing their motivations and tactics – such as non-essential patents being more valuable. He discussed injunctive relief, the proportionality principle and questioned if this should be available for standard essential patents. He highlighted some of the patent hold up issues such as royalty stacking, patent ambush and the effect that technology has had by bringing many standards together; for example an iPhone has an estimated 54,000 patents! More standards yield more essential patents, but litigation can be risky for patent trolls enforcing their patents as the courts can render them exhausted.
The event was brought to a close with drinks and nibbles and Dr. Saunders had the honour of blowing out the candles of the CIPPM IP Day cake!
World IP Day Events Across the Globe
Developing an International Face of Fusion
Following the success of FIF SMN application two mutual visits were made. Professor Ramesh visited BU during Nov-Dec 2012 for 5 weeks. This was followed by a week visit by Dr Zulfiqar Khan during Feb 2013 to PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore, India. This activity resulted in significant achievements over all areas of FUSION in research, education and professional practice. Both Prof. C S Ramesh and Dr Zulfiqar Khan participated in teaching activities at BU and PES IT Bangalore respectively.
Education
Participation in education has resulted in enhanced students’ experience at level C and H. Level H students have produced journal publications, a major achievement of this activity and has provided example of engaging UG students in research activities through research informed education. Students’ engagement with research has enhanced their experience at BU, awareness of the international activities and advancement in nano-technology and nano materials. Publications by UG students will play a very significant role in the promotion of BU and raising its academic profile at international stage as leader in FUSION.
Research/Professional Practice
This programme provided opportunity of developing research proposals and bidding for external funding in collaboration with external academic and industrial partners.
One research proposals was developed in collaboration with academic partners as PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore, India, Visvesvaraya Technological University and industrial partners National Aerospace Laboratories India, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd India, Gas Turbine Research Establishment India and Ingersoll Rand India to target EPSRC-DST initiative. Through the development and submission of research proposal for the EPSRC-DST (BU/PESIT India) application significant industrial links have been initiated and will be further strengthened in near future, through the formation of an International Consortium in Renewable Energy & Renewable Technology (RERT).
A second research proposal was developed with PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore, India to target World Bank initiative in Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP).
A joint research proposal to Erasmus Mundus JASMINE Techno III has been submitted as part of the fusion activity and has provided opportunity to increase and further strengthen collaborative links with cross-channel (France), EU & Indian partners.
In addition the proposed programme within FIF SMN resulted in publications of three journal papers of which two were published with the final year Design Engineering students. Four conference papers were submitted/ published of which 1 conference paper was submitted with UG final year Design Engineering student and PGR.
Further Plans
It is aimed to form an international consortium and strengthen exiting partnerships around the world including key academic partners such as PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore, India, Visvesvaraya Technological University, India, GIK Institute of Technology, Pakistan and Wisconsin-University Milwaukee, US.
This partnership will pave way for exploring future opportunities of tapping into external funds e.g. National Science Foundation (NSF), The World Bank, EPSRC-DST (Department of Science and Technology India), developing and submitting joint research proposals, developing case studies for UG and PGT taught provisions and staff/students exchanges.
Fusion in Action Conference
During the Fusion in Action Conference on Thursday April 18, 2013 the highlights of the programme in terms of activities in research, education and professional practice and successes to date were presented, which has been uploaded Fusion in Action 180413.

On Wednesday 27th March, 2013 the Psychology Research Centre will be holding an informal forum for anyone who is currently doing, or interested in doing, research related to eHealth (e.g. research interests may include understanding how people (e.g. potential patients, patients, health professionals) use the internet for health information and/or intervention). We are informally calling this forum CHIRP which stands for Centre for eHealth Internet Research and Practice and it is open to any staff or postgraduate students at BU who would like to meet up to discuss research plans, ideas and potential collaborations.
The topic of eHealth fits well into the BU research themes of ‘Health, Wellbeing & Ageing’ and ‘Technology & Design’ and we are currently aware of members in DEC and HSC who are currently conducting research in this area.
The aim of this meeting will be to get together and understand common research interests therefore we would ask you to come prepared to talk for around 3 minutes about the current work you are doing (feel free to send a powerpoint slide with details of you interest too).
The forum will be held at 3pm in room P405 at Poole House and Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. Please contact Sarah Williams in Psychology by early next week if you are interesting in attending.

Dr. Dinusha Mendis has published a paper on 3D Printing and its implications for Intellectual Property Law titled ‘“The Clone Wars”: Episode 1 – The Rise of 3D Printing and its implications for Intellectual Property Law: Learning Lessons from the Past?’ The paper was published in the European Intellectual Property Review in February 2013 (pp. 155-169).
In drawing parallels with the entertainment industry and online piracy, this paper highlights the challenges which will be faced by the current Intellectual Property (IP) laws as a result of 3D printing and suggests that rather than focus on stringent IP laws the future lies in adopting new business models in adapting to this new technology. To this effect, the paper suggests some recommendations for the future.
Following the publication of the paper, Dr. Mendis was interviewed by BBC 5Live ‘Outriders’ programme – a programme dedicated to exploring the frontiers of the web. The interview was broadcast on 19 February 2013 and is available here http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/pods (the relevant section of the interview can be accessed at 15.45 minutes of the programme).
In this interview Dinusha speaks to BBC’s Jamillah Knowles about her paper and the challenges which will be faced by intellectual property laws in the wake of 3D printing.
This cross-school fusion event is an opportunity to hear about renewable energy initiatives that are engaging the local community and businesses. A multi-disciplinary network has been developed that engages students with practitioners, real world issues and the development of practical solutions. In the presentations we will discuss the student experience and how this initiative is developing the transferable skills needed for employment in the 21st century. You will also hear about the multi-disciplinary network that has been created to focus on renewable energy and renewable technology, current activities and future potential. There will be an opportunity for informal discussion with those involved and for networking with local businesses and community organisations.

A unique collaboration between the Business School (BS), DEC and Applied Sciences (ApSci) combined research, education and practice to create a unique multi-disciplinary academic experience for students and staff. Investigation into the feasibility of harnessing the power of the tide in Poole Harbour was explored using a multi-disciplinary network of projects that connected students, staff, external organisations and the local community. This works was supported by BU through fusion grant (BS, DEC and ApSci).
The project has demonstrated how the student experience is enhanced through the Fusion of education, research and practice in a multidisciplinary network focused on undertaking projects that explore specific real-world issues or opportunities. This project:
The BS tutor continues to maintain close relationship with PTEP and Sustainability Knots and as these initiatives make progress and gather momentum is well placed to extend relationships for renewable energy, as well as the social and environmental aspects of sustainability. This includes identifying local opportunities for student participation in projects addressing real issues and opportunities and sharing local experience with professional and community audiences further afield.
BU Academics Dr Zulfiqar Khan and Prof Mark Hadfield (DEC), Sukanya Ayatakshi (BS) and Elena Cantarello (ApSci) exhibited at the govtoday Carbon Reduction 2012 event on 27 November 2012 at the Brewery Conference Centre in London . MSc in Green Economy, IMechE Further Learning Programme, BU research themes, UG/PG courses, resources and expertise were showcased and promoted during the event. Attendees included representatives from relevant government departments, agencies and other public sector organisations.
DEC has established links with international partners in renewable energy and technology, and an external professor visited (externally funded) Sustainable Design Research Centre within DEC,. He delivered a research seminar in renewable energy and participated in education activities and delivered various guest lectures to Design & Engineering Framework students in DEC.
The ApSci tutor Tilak Ginige presented along with a final year ApSci student Stanford Julius, the finding of the Poole Harbour Renewable Energy Feasibilty study at Environmental Law stream at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyers COBRA 2012 Conference held in Las Vegas, USA in September 2012.
The first BU wide Renewable Energy & Renewable Technology (RERT) March 29, 2012, the 2nd RERT event took place on Jan 23, 2013. The coming RERT event is as follows.

I would like to make you aware of an exciting development at BU.
A multi-disciplinary group of BU academics has been meeting over the last 6 months in order to design a online journal that is capable of acting as a central focus for the dissemination of the high quality research and scholarly outputs from UG and PG dissertations, post graduate researchers, early career researchers and established academic staff. The group has designed a developmental working paper online journal that will support ‘would be’ authors and their potential publications. Although particular emphasis has been given to maximising high quality outputs of UG and PG students and early career academics, this online journal will be capable of supporting the potential of all those engaged in research and scholarship at BU.

What’s the name of the working paper?
The provisional title is eBU: Working Papers Online
How is the working paper structured?
The working paper will not be limited to any one discipline or allied to any one particular methodology, but will aim to publish articles driven by the key BU Research Themes: (Creative and Digital Economies, Culture and Society, Entrepreneurship and Economic Growth, Environmental Change and Biodiversity, Green Economy and Sustainability, Health, Wellbeing and Ageing, Leisure and Recreation, Technology and Design). Apart from the build-up to launch, the working paper will have no deadlines or specific calls for papers. Instead, the working paper will work on a rolling submission process.
A set of author guidelines and details about formats are currently being considered and written. However, the guidelines are likely to accommodate a wide range of formats.
What are the submission processes for staff and students?
It is envisaged that staff will act as gatekeepers and encourage undergraduate and master’s students to submit high quality work into a format this is publishable. Post-graduate researchers and academic members of staff will be able to submit papers on their own accord.
After a short review from the editorial board, two designated BU academics will provide an initial quality check. The paper will then be uploaded to the internal intranet working paper site. This will allow any member of staff or student to read and offer feedback. However, within a few weeks the two designed reviewers will then provide a more comprehensive and detailed critical review. All reviews will take place in a safe, secure and INTERNAL environment. After a detailed review, students will then be encouraged to make any recommended changes and submit to external publication/or make their work available to be published on external working paper website.
This working paper is set to go live in March.
