ESRC NCRM International Visitor Exchange Scheme launched

The National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM) has launched its International Visitor Exchange Scheme (IVES). This will fund visits of between one and three months to or from experts at the forefront of key methodological developments. The scheme aims to enable “UK social scientists to engage with methods development internationally, in order to stimulate debate and develop ideas (with associated outputs) in relation to methodological innovation in the social sciences.” Awards can begin from 1 January 2016, with a deadline for submissions of 25 September 2015. Up to 6 awards of £5000 are expected to be available.

NERC Industrial CASE Studentship Competition

Background 

NERC studentships can be delivered in collaboration with non-academic partners from the private, public and third/civil sectors; where studentships are delivered in collaboration they are referred to as ‘CASE studentships’. CASE studentships provide the PhD students with enhanced training opportunities by ensuring they spend between three and eighteen months in total with their CASE partner in a workplace outside the academic environment.

This call is now open. The closing date is 16:00 Wednesday 8 July 2015.

  • research excellence (30%)
  • training excellence and multidisciplinary training environments (30%)
  • collaboration and impact (20%)
  • student recruitment, monitoring and management (20%)

Update

  • Please note, CASE partner financial contributions are to be paid to the lead Research Organisation to supplement the studentship and project, and will no longer be paid directly to the student.
  • In most instances organisations eligible for Research Council funding cannot act as a CASE partner. This includes NERC Research Centres (BAS, BGS, CEH, NCAS, NCEO, NOC)

The assessment panel will meet on 17-18 November 2015. Applicants will be notified of the outcomes by the end of December 2015.

The EU’s Tenders Electronic Daily or TED  is the database to search for all European public procurement.

Registering with TED:

  • To access the entire content of TED, including the archive.
  • To personalise search profiles, according to your needs.
  • To get e-mail alerts based on your search profiles.
  • To personalise RSS feeds for your web sites and RSS readers.
  • Registration and use of TED is absolutely free, and will remain so.

NIHR Panels and Boards are Recruiting

NIHR research programme boards and panels select the most important research questions to commission, and make funding recommendations on project applications.

They are looking for additional expertise for the boards or panels of the following programmes:

Royal Society Pairing Scheme

Funding opportunities

This Royal Society scheme gives policymakers and research scientists an opportunity to experience each other’s worlds.

Each year 30 research scientists are paired with UK parliamentarians and civil servants. They learn about each other’s work by spending time together in Westminster and the researcher’s labs.  Those taking part gain an insight into how research findings can help inform policy making, and come away with a better understanding of how they can get involved.

How does the scheme work?

The scheme takes place annually, beginning with a ‘Week in Westminster’ in which the pairs first meet. Over the week the scientists take part in workshops, hear from invited speakers and spend two days shadowing their pair.  Read last year’s ‘Week in Westminster’ agenda (PDF).

After the ‘Week in Westminster’, it is the turn of the parliamentarians and civil servants to get an insight into the world of research, undertaking reciprocal visits with their pairs.

Innovate UK

Portable Renewable Energy Generation. A project competition has been opened to identify and develop innovative solutions to generate portable renewable energy technologies that are able to work in a range of locations on underused or vacant land in Cardiff. Up to £1m will be awarded. Closing Date: 08/06/2015

Medical Research Council

Tackling AMR Theme 2: Accelerating therapeutic and diagnostics development.  Bids are welcome for the broad theme encompassing the development, scale up and manufacture of new human and animal therapies and the diagnostics required to better target both new and existing therapies, and to monitor bacterial pathogen spread. Funds will be available to support research over 12-24 months period, and are expected to be around £200k (80% fec). Closing Date: 04/06/2015 at 16:00

UK-Brazil Neglected Infectious Diseases Partnership. This initiative will provide funding for collaborative 2-3 year research projects, focused on neglected infectious diseases in Brazil. Closing Date: 18/06/2015 16:00

UK – Philippines: Joint Health Research Call. The focus of this call is research into infectious diseases that impact the most vulnerable in society within the Philippines. Up to £3.2m funding is available with up to £640k available per partnership. Expression of Interest Closing Date: 16/07/2015

Natural Environment Research Council

Environmental Risks to Infrastructure Innovation. A budget of up to £1m is available for research that addresses the challenge of making our infrastructure resilient and mitigating the effects of extreme weather events and climate change. Expressions of Interest Closing Date: 28/05/ 2015 at 16:00

The Royal Society

International Scientific Seminars. This scheme is for Royal Society Research Fellows who want to organise a small two-day scientific seminar, specific to a particular field of science or cross disciplinary in nature, at the Royal Society at Chicheley Hall. Closing Date: 11/06/2015

Wellcome Trust

Research Training Fellowships. This scheme is for medical, dental, veterinary or clinical psychology graduates who have little or no research training, but who wish to develop a long-term career in academia. Fellowships are normally for two to three years and cover research expenses and the fellow’s salary.  Closing Date: 07/09/2015

OECD Co-operative Research Programme Fellowships

The aim of the OECD Research Fellowships is to strengthen the international exchange of ideas and increase international mobility and co-operation among scientists working in these areas.
