Open call to SMEs and new entrants for industrial experiments Digital Agenda for Europe

The Digital Agenda for Europe will shortly be inviting applications for its second open call to SMEs and new entrants for industrial experiments. The call will open on 28 October 2015 and the closing date is 3 December 2015.  This call aims to initiate new business and innovation opportunities between SMEs and new entrants, major cyber physical system-platform providers, and competence centres. The maximum European Commission contribution for industrial experiments per applicant is €150,000. The funding rate is 70 per cent. The maximum duration of industrial experiment is 18 months.

BFX 2015 ACADEMIC CONFERENCE

Following from last years successful academic conference  (forming part of the BFX Festival)  will be running  for the second time between the 26th-27th September at Bournemouth University’s  Executive Business Centre.

This year’s theme is ANALOGUE TO POST-DIGITAL.  The BFX Conference is underpinned by a strong belief in the benefits interdisciplinary discourse, and aims to create a platform for these exchanges to take place around the field of digital moving images and related technologies. Contemporary still and moving images and their related practices sit in the interstices of the analogue and digital. The BFX conference invites participants to consider the trajectories of these movements as we engage in a discourse of the ‘post-digital’ in still and moving image.

Embedded within these fields are a range of themes such as: memory and the archive, media archaeology, hybridity, intermedia practices, folksonomies and virtual curatorships, the network, new pedagogues and education design. The conference welcomes approaches that consider the continuities and breaks in technologies and practices, as well as the range of possibilities that may be inspired by thinking about the post-digital.

The conference will also focus upon both academic discourse and artistic practice, and has included artist roundtables as part of their programme.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Prof. Charlie Gere, from the Lancaster Institute for Contemporary Arts and author of Digital Culture(2002), Art, Time and Technology (2006), Non-relational Aesthetics, with Michael Corris (2009), and Community without Community in Digital Culture (2012)as well as co-editor of White Heat Cold Technology (2009), and Art Practice in a Digital Culture (2010), and many papers on questions of technology, media and art.

Dr. David M. Berry, Director of the Sussex Humanities Lab and author of Critical Theory and the Digital, The Philosophy of Software: Code and Mediation in the Digital Age,Copy, Rip, Burn: The Politics of Copyleft and Open Source,the editor of Understanding Digital Humanities and co-editor ofPostdigital Aesthetics: Art, Computation and Design

Prof. Wolfgang Ernst. Professor for Media Theory at the Institut für Musik und Medienwissenschaft at Humboldt University, Berlin, where he co-runs the Media Archaeological Fundus. He is also author of Digital Memory and the Archive (2012), and a compilation of other literature including“Media Archaeography: Method and Machine versus History and Narrative of Media”, and From Media History to Zeitkritik (2013).

Innovate UK is to invest up to £4 million in collaborative research and development (R&D) projects that tackle the growing risks of disruption to internet-enabled businesses and their digital supply chains.

With the Internet of Things providing new sources of data and end-users’ ever-increasing digital footprint, it is difficult to adequately protect the interests of a business, industry or sector. There is also a lack of understanding of the effects disruption may have.  Desired proposals would address the challenge of protecting a business, industry or sector from digital disruption that could compromise data across the digital supply chain.

SW businesses can benefit from £5k of funding from Creative England

Creative England is offering creative digital businesses in the South West the chance to apply for a third round of Business Strategy and Innovation Vouchers.

The scheme provides companies with £1,000 – £5,000 to subsidise much of the cost of procuring expert third party services in order to aid growth.

Funded by the Creative Industries iNet programme through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Regional Growth Fund (RGF), the initiative focuses strongly on digital innovation and business strategy.

The Creative England Innovation Programme helps creative companies build and sell innovative products and services more successfully. This work is delivered through structured projects – which include seed investment, mentoring, marketing, and business support, planning and strategy. These projects help companies jump over business barriers to grow more quickly and profitably.

In order to apply to this round, businesses must be based in Bristol, Bath, Dorset, Devon, Wiltshire, Somerset or Gloucestershire, and be able to provide a total equalling 30% of the requested amount in match funding.

The voucher scheme is part of a wider £314k programme of support through the Creative England Innovation Programme.

Silicon South is working on behalf of the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership to develop a strategy for boosting the digital creative economy in Dorset. Silicon South has committed to undertake a series of research and feasibility studies which together will inform a full-scale investment strategy setting out how this growth can be achieved.

Silicon South is looking for two freelance full-time researchers to assist in the development of the strategy by undertaking research and analysis on a range of projects related to the creative and digital sector. Working to the Director of Silicon South, you will undertake a combination of primary and secondary data analysis and research on a variety of topics relevant to Silicon South’s strategy.

£1million in digital healthcare innovation available from Creative England

Funding opportunities

This fund is designed to stimulate creative and digital innovation in This UK healthcare.
Are you working with or know of  small creative and digital businesses (SMEs) with innovative concepts or prototypes using digital technology to improve patient care and health services?
These maybe in areas such as dementia, social care, and cardiovascular and medication management.
The South West is one of the first three regions to benefit from this funding opportunity.
Key information:
  • 5 x £50,000 investments will be made.
  • Companies must be based in the North, Midlands or South West.
  • Examples of projects could be improving quality of care; caring for people with dementia; supporting people with long-term conditions; and data visualisation.
  • Mobile apps, development of a new game for tablet or mobile are also eligible.

Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis and the fund will close on 31 October 2014.

Investment of up to £100k is on offer for digital innovation in the music, publishing and games sectors.

Information in brief:

The IC tomorrow programme aims to stimulate innovation and economic growth in the digital sector and is offering four businesses up to £25k each to encourage digital innovation in the area of entertainment on the move in music, book and magazine publishing and games/interactive entertainment:

  • music on the move with the British Recorded Music Industry (BPI)
  • books on the move with the Publishers Association (PA)
  • magazine content on the move with the Professional Publishers Association (PPA)
  • interactive entertainment/games on the move with UK Interactive Entertainment (Ukie).
