Applying for grants is great!

I recently had the opportunity to apply for a grant as principal investigator. The reason for writing this post today is to say thanks to everyone involved, including the RKEO staff, the Co-investigators (Paula Callus in particular), the partner institutions but also all colleagues who gave us suggestions, supporting and helping also if not involved (Isabella Rega and Richard Berger were some of these).

On reflection, I would have done all of it differently. More time was needed (possibly not when on Annual Leave and not night time), partners need to be in place well before the call is out, reference letters cannot be asked for last minute, etc. I made all (or almost all) the mistakes above, but I had a very clear idea about the project and I felt surrounded by enthusiastic colleagues who were happy to share their expertise with me. I now know I have still a lot to learn and I can’t wait for the next opportunity.

A good point was to take notes which will be used for next grant applications. Somehow it does not matter if we will get the funding at this first attempt, we are looking forward to improving the application and the project itself, which will require more research. Yes, applying for grants is not a boring task, there is a lot of research involved which brings new ideas and opens up opportunities, whether you get the funding or not.

I hope this post will be read as a positive gentle push to apply for grants and not only because it’s the Institution in need of more grants applications but because the process itself is incredibly enriching. I hope my colleagues enjoy their future grant applications as much as I did.

  • Getting started with Knowledge Exchange and business engagement

Firstly, thank you to all those who took the time to complete the survey on the RKEO Calendar.  86% of you think the calendar is a great idea AND want another one for 2018/19.  We’ve received some helpful comments on how it can be improved for next year and lots of complements on the first calendar, such as ‘Great job, thank you’ and ‘Beautiful – nice reminder’.

It’s been four months since the 2017-18 RKEO calendar landed on your desk.  The calendar contains all of the events that RKEO arrange, major funder call closing dates, information on various research schemes, and other activities that will be of interest to academics.

ESRC Festival of Social Science – what we have in store for you

BU research

In collaboration with the Economic and Social Research Council’s (ESRC) Festival of Social Science, Professor Sangeeta Khorana and Professor Jens Holscher will be coordinating an engaging workshop and panel discussion for local businesses to discuss the possible options around several pressing post-Brexit issues. These issues are;

  • What form of economic relationship can be best re-negotiated within the short timespan (until October 2018) between the UK and EU?
  • What will be the impact on small and medium sized British firms? What steps are proposed to endure that British firms remain competitive after Brexit?
  • Implications for UK trade policy making, focusing in particular on future trade arrangements with the World Trade Organisation and other countries.

The Festival of Social Science offers a fantastic insight into some of the country’s leading social science research and its influence on our social, economic, and political lives both now and in the future. This event will be able to show insight from business leaders and the Commonwealth Secretariat on the issues around Brexit, as well as create a dialogue for businesses in the South West to have their opinions shared.

RKEO calendar 2017-18

BU research

Coming soon to a desk near you, or rather, it will be on your desk by the end of this month, RKEO are pleased to announce that we have designed our first ever desk calendar for all academic staff.

The calendar runs from September 2017 through to July 2018 (no August entry as we all need a well-deserved rest).  It props up nicely to stand alone on your desk.  It contains:

The calendar contains many images from the BU Research Photography competition, including this years winner ‘I am Ron’ by Chantel Cox, which has aptly been placed in December.  Thanks to all those who agreed to have their fantastic photos included.  We will survey staff for opinions on the calendar in approximately six months time.
