BU PhD student newly appointed journal editor

Congratulations to Joanne Rack, PhD student (Clinical Doctorate) in the Faculty of Health , Environment & Medical Sciences (HEMS) who has been appointed this month as the new Editor in Chief of The Practising Midwife. Joanne is doing her Clinical Doctorate in the Centre for Midwifery & Women’s Health (CMWH) specialising in personalised care for women of advanced maternal age (AMA). This PhD study is matched-funded by University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) NHS Foundation Trust and Bournemouth University. Her PhD is supervised and supported by Profs. Vanora Hundley and Edwin van Teijlingen at BU and former BU Professor Ann Luce (who has recently moved to the University of the West of Scotland) and Dr. Latha Vinayakarao in Bournemouth Maternity Hospital.

New editorial Journal of Asian Midwives published

The latest issue of the Journal of Asian Midwives was published last week. In the accompanying editorial we focused on the environment and sustainability in midwifery and maternity care.

Climate disasters appear to be on the rise worldwide, owing mostly to global warming, but also to urbanization and other human factors. Some Asian countries are among the world’s most climate-vulnerable, such as Nepal ranking 139th out of 182 in terms of exposure, sensitivity, and ability to adapt to the negative effects of climate change. Nepal, well-known for its mountains, the Himalayans, and especially, Mount Everest, is grappling with not solely earthquakes, but also floods, landslides, wildfires, and droughts. In the past decades we have also seen major natural disasters in many other South Asian countries, such as cyclones in Bangladesh, earthquakes and flooding in Pakistan, tsunami and drought in India, and so on.

Marginalized populations, suffer already from poverty, food insecurity, and discrimination, and agriculture-based livelihoods, are especially susceptible to environmental effects. These calamities frequently adversely impact low-income populations. We must not forget that when a disaster strikes, regardless of climate change, the impacted areas will require emergency rescue teams, temporary shelters, food and medication, and other necessities, as well as infrastructure support to keep non-emergency services functional. Remember that even after an earthquake, flood, or volcano eruption, there will still be a mother going into labour!

The Journal of Asian Midwives is Open Access and hence freely available to everybody with internet access in Asia (and elsewhere in the world).

Impact Factor for Nepal Journal of Epidemiology

The Nepal Journal of Epidemiology achieved its first proper Web of Science impact factor this month. The Nepal Journal of Epidemiology is a international journal with strong links to Bournemouth University. It is a Open Access journal that covers all aspects of epidemiology and encourages communication among those engaged in the research, teaching, and application of epidemiology of both communicable and non-communicable disease, including research into health services, public health and medical care. One of the two Editors-in-Chief is Dr. Brijesh Sathian, FHSS Visiting Faculty and the journal’s Editorial Board Members include Prof. Padam Simkhada, FHSS Visiting Faculty as well as Prof. Edwin van Teijlingen in the Centre for Midwifery & Women’s Health.

The end of an era

Yesterday I wrote my resignation letter to the journal BMC Pregnancy & Childbirth. After acting as Associate Editor for fifteen years the time has come for me to give it up, and I found ‘giving up’ very difficult. The enormous growth in my workload at Bournemouth University and the increasing requests to take on new papers as Associate Editor, on top of the many requests to review papers and grants, just became too much. It made me realize I needed to reduce several tasks and jobs to have a slightly better balanced work-home life.

I am still co-editor of the Journal of Asian Midwives, book review editor of Sociological Research Online, guest editor for a special issue of Frontiers in Public Health, and I am still on the editorial or advisory boards of: Birth (published by Wiley), Sociological Research Online (published by SAGE), Nepal Journal of Epidemiology, Journal of Manmohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences, and Midwifery (published by Elsevier), so still plenty of work to be done.

Bournemouth University mentioned in Pakistan

Last week The Aga Khan University (AKU) in Pakistan put a news story on its website highlighting a first for Pakistan. The reason for celebrating was that the Journal of Asian Midwives, one of the only two research journals hosted by The Aga Khan University, has been accepted for inclusion in Scopus. Scopus, which is part of the publishing house Elsevier, is the world’s largest electronic database of peer-reviewed literature: scientific journals, books and conference proceedings. The Journal of Asian Midwives is an Open Access journal and publishing is free. One of its three co-editors is based at Bournemouth University.

A global health journal with a diverse editorial board

A recent study of 43 journals in the global health field found that PLOS Global Public Health has the joint highest diversity index, whilst also recording the maximum geographic diversity score! [1] The paper by a team from Pakistan and Canada addressed the question: “What is the current state of ethics of diversity and representation in global health publications?” In order to be able to answer this question they developed their own Journal Diversity Index (JDI) to measure three parameters of diversity and representation, namely gender, geographic & socioeconomic status.

The fact that PLOS Global Public Health came out top is good news for the Centre for Midwifery, Maternal & Perinatal Health (CMMPH) as we published a paper in this journal last month. [2] Our qualitative paper ‘Perceptions around COVID-19 and vaccine hesitancy: A qualitative study in Kaski district, Western Nepal’ comprises 19 interviews in the city of Pokhara and its surrounding rural areas.

Dr. Pramod Regmi, FHSS Lecturer in International Health has been appointed as an Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Global Health Reports. This journal is affiliated with the Journal of Global Health (www.jogh.org). The Journal of Global Health Reports focuses on “Promoting local research to improve global health” It is open to all local, small-scale, context-specific studies in global health, both qualitative and quantitative, as long as they are conducted in a rigorous and replicable way and report their results properly.
