Join our BU Public Engagement Network meeting: Monday 7 February 2022

At this meeting, we’ll look at engaging with policy and policy makers – a particular type of non-academic audience. We’ll be joined by BU Policy and Public Affairs Officer, Sarah Carter and Professor in Media Management, John Oliver.

Easing into policy

This short session will introduce colleagues to the variety of ways their research and expertise can create impact through policy. It will include how to connect with policy makers and keep abreast of political interest within their field. We’ll provide real life examples and help colleagues to consider their next steps.

The meeting will take place 12-1pm on Monday 7 February, on Teams.

Please tell us about the social, cultural and community events that you’ve been involved with by Tuesday 25th January.

BU is currently compiling the data for the annual Higher Education – Business & Community (HE-BCI) survey. Data returned is used to calculate our Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF) grant and feeds into our Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) submission, so it’s really important that we can provide an accurate picture.

We are asked to submit details of all social, cultural and community events designed for the external community – including both free and chargeable events – which took place between 1 August 2020 and 31 July 2021. Event types that should be returned include, but are not limited to:

public lectures
performance arts (dance, drama, music, etc)
exhibitions
museum education
events for schools and community groups
festival activity
media engagement.

Please note that we cannot return events such as open days, Student Union activity, widening participation activity, commercial conferences, talks for academic audiences etc.

All events that were part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science 2020 and the Cafe Scientifique series have been collated on your behalf centrally, so there is no need to add these.

If you have been involved with any other event which could be returned, please go to the HE-BCI Table 5 SharePoint site and input further details about the event. The deadline for entries is 25 January 2022.

British Science Festival 2022: Open Call for proposals

Do you have an idea to engage public audiences with science and research?

The British Science Festival are now accepting event proposals for the 2022 Festival in Leicester, hosted by De Montfort University.

Proposals are welcome from individuals, researchers, industry professionals, artists, writers, organisations, charities, academic institutions, and more. Festival proposals should be aimed at non-specialist adults (16+) with a broad interest in science.

Festival organisers are looking for events that showcase cutting-edge science, celebrate the latest developments in science and technology and engage their audience in open discussion about relevant issues that affect culture and society. They aim to programme a range of formats from talks to drop-in activities and creative content that challenges perceptions of what science is and can be.

RKEDF Workshop – Evaluation: Developing your approach

Why is evaluation important in public engagement? And how do you do it effectively?

We are delighted to have teamed up with the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE), who will deliver this bespoke session for BU researchers.

This interactive course will encourage participants to think about why evaluation is important, look at ways to get started, explore different techniques they can use, and consider what findings can tell the participant and their organisation or funder. With an emphasis on how to conduct evaluation, participating in practical activities and discussion as together the workshop facilitators and attendees will demystify evaluation and find the fun in revealing and identifying participants’ effectiveness.

These sessions are aimed at people with experience of public engagement with research; however, the session will be open to all experience levels.

Learning objectives:

To develop an awareness of the value and importance of evaluating public engagement.
To gain familiarity with the process of evaluation and the usefulness of planning.
To consider the uses of evaluation including improving activities; sharing good practice and reporting.
To begin to explore the issues and challenges of evaluating public engagement.

By the end of this session, you will:

Have a greater understanding and awareness of the importance of evaluating public engagement
Understand the processes of evaluation and how to plan for it.

It is a condition of booking that the attendee agrees that their contact email will be shared with the NCCPE for the purposes of programme administration.

RKEDF Workshop: Introduction to Community Engagement

This is a brand new session for 2021-22 – providing an introduction to what is involved when developing mutually beneficial research partnerships with communities. It will also help you decide whether it is the favoured approach for you and your community partners.

The session will be delivered by the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement and is aimed at those working in universities who want to know more about community engagement and are interested in the potential of applying a community-engaged research approach.

Learning objectives:

Consider your knowledge and understanding of community engagement and community engaged research
Explore the continuum of collaborative research with communities
Think about what helps to build strong community engagement and enhance your skills by experimenting with these ideas
Reflect on how community engagement relates to your own work and roles.

By the end of this session, you will:

Understand how community engagement works
Be aware of how community engagement relates to your own work
Have an understanding of what makes strong community engagement

We can help promote your public engagement event or activity

At BU we promote and celebrate the work done to engage public audiences with BU research.

The public engagement with research team in Research Development and Support (RDS) can help promote your event to relevant audiences through our regular newsletter and social media channels. It also helps us to stay informed on the public engagement work being carried out by BU.

Please note: we are keen to promote BU public engagement with research activity wherever possible, but completing this form does not guarantee that we will be able to promote your event. To be considered for inclusion, your event or activity must be;

Focused on BU research, either solely or as part of a wider programme.
- Events or activities that do not involve BU research, such as marketing or recruitment events, will not be accepted.
Intended for and open to non-academic audiences, either entirely or as a portion of the audience.
Submitted, at the latest, in the first two weeks of the month preceding the event.
- For example, an event taking place in June should be submitted via the form any time before 14 May. This is due to lead times on producing and sending the newsletter.

Event descriptions may be edited for consistency in style with other content. If you have any questions about this process, please contact us.

Soapbox Science Brighton 2022: Call for speakers now open

Call for speakers at Soapbox Science Brighton 2022 now open.

What is Soapbox Science?

Soapbox Science is a fun and engaging way of communicating your research and raising the profile of female, non-binary and gender queer scientists. The aim of Soapbox Science is to promote female and gender diverse scientists and the work they do, challenging stereotypes of who can be a scientist.

Events

Soapbox Science events transform public areas into an arena for public learning and scientific debate; they follow the format of London Hyde Park’s Speaker’s Corner, which is historically an arena for public debate.

Learn, heckle, question, probe, interact with and be inspired by some of our leading scientists. No middle person, no PowerPoint slides, no amphitheatre – just remarkable women and non-binary scientists sharing their latest discoveries, and answering the science questions you have been burning to ask.

Open Call

The call for speakers is open to female, non-binary and gender queer STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) researchers and entrepreneurs from PhD to Professor.

Funding for travel is provided. The organisers will provide all speakers with training in public speaking and science communication, as well as supporting you to think creatively about how to communicate your research in the most engaging way.

The event will be held on Brighton Seafront on Saturday 21 May 2022

NERC – Knowledge Exchange Fellowships

Apply for £150k funding to enhance the impact of research in the environmental sciences.

NERC knowledge exchange fellowships help you and your stakeholders to share knowledge.

NERC welcome researchers at all career stages. Your project must focus on a research theme from the NERC delivery plan.

The full economic cost of your project must be about £150,000. The fellowship will cover up to 100% of your salary. You would receive up to £40,000 for direct costs, including travel.

Introducing the Early Career Researcher Network

Our established network of Early Career Researchers extends across the faculties. It provides support to Early Career Researchers from the experienced academic leaders of the network, Dr. Sam Goodman, and Prof. Ann Hemingway, as well as from peers, and highlights the support available from the Research Development and Support department and other BU teams. It also, as the name suggests, provides a forum for networking and making connections that can be of great benefit to an academic’s research career.

We have monthly networking events. We plan to continue holding them online for the time being, with a view to trialling at least a couple of hybrid events later in this academic year. We have a mix of themed discussions, (on topics like career planning, dealing with imposter syndrome, managing your profile as a researcher), plus open surgeries with more general Q&A.

Wildfires and Us

Every year wildfires engulf 3.4 million square kilometres of Earth’s surface – approximately the size of India. These fires have massive economic, social and environmental impacts and, due to climate change, are expected to increase in the future. However, wildfires are also a naturally occurring global phenomenon that many ecosystems depend on.

Join us to discover how scientific research at Bournemouth University could fill in some of the gaps in this complicated relationship between humans and wildfires.

IMSET Seminar: How archaeologists can contribute to a Green New Revolution

BU are delighted to welcome Erika Guttman-Bond tomorrow, Thursday October 28^th, at 4.30pm for a hybrid seminar, held in F306 and on line.

There has been a lot of interest in the failures of the past and the environmental disasters that have ensued because of poor land management practices. Erika will be arguing that the successes of the past are of equal importance. Her research focuses on pre-industrial techniques that have been rediscovered, either through archaeology or anthropology, and put back to work. Such systems often prove to be not only more sustainable than modern approaches, but more resilient in the face of environmental extremes.

For an increasing number of people, coastal flooding and erosion are a real threat to property, the local economy and, in some cases, life. With the effects of climate change, this threat is quickly growing.

Should coastal communities at risk be relocated before they are forced from their homes? Or could engineering and nature-based solutions provide the defences they need?

Join us to discover the challenges faced by coastal communities in an uncertain climate future, and what society could do to address them.

What’s in it for us? An introduction to Public and Patient Involvement from the public’s perspective

Sign up for the new RKEDF online interactive workshop to find out about getting the public involved with your research.

Date: Tuesday 19 October 11-12:30pm

This short workshop offers an engaging introduction to the what, why and how of public involvement in research. It is co-designed and facilitated by Rachel Jury and Tim Worner who have extensive experience of sharing their lived experience expertise in research studies, Dr Mel Hughes, Academic Lead for the BU PIER (Public Involvement in Education and Research) Partnership and Angela Warren, PIER involvement coordinator. The workshop will cover the different approaches to public involvement; the public contributor role; the benefits of public involvement and what pitfalls to avoid.

The workshop will also provide an opportunity for researchers to learn about public involvement and to consider this from the perspective of experts by experience and in relation to their own research. This will be an interactive workshop with opportunities for researchers to share and discuss ideas and plans.

What is public involvement in research?

Public involvement in research means research that is done ‘with’ or ‘by’ the public, not ‘to’, ‘about’ or ‘for’ them. It means that patients or other people with relevant experience contribute to how research is designed, conducted and disseminated.

Intended learning outcomes of this session

Develop knowledge and understanding of different models of public involvement
Consider the benefits of public involvement for a research study and all those involved
Identify best practice in designing and conducting public involvement in research

Who is this session aimed at?

Researchers at any career stage or level who are actively considering or developing a public involvement strategy for their own research or wish to find out more.

We’ll be joined by Dr Ashok Patnaik on Tuesday 5 October from 7.00pm until 8.30pm.

The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened children’s mental health, which was already in decline. Researchers have observed increased levels of anxiety, depression and other psychological distress. However, children with poor mental health do not always receive the support they need from schools and mental health services.

Stormbreak is a new programme that combines simple, fun movements with well-being techniques such as talking therapies and mindfulness, to help children care for their mental health. Join us to discover what happened when Stormbreak was trialled in several local schools, and where it could go next.

BU contribution to development of Nepali academics

Yesterday we had the pleasure of running an Academic Writing Workshop for academics and postgraduate students in the Department of Health & Physical Education based at the Sanothimi campus of Tribhuvan University. Tribhuvan University is the oldest and largest university of Nepal. We base these training session on our various publications on academic publishing, [1-14] and we used the opportunity to advertise our forthcoming textbook on the matter [15].
