Bridging Business and Research

Companies do not necessarily have the facilities, financial resources or human capital to run their research projects as they would like to. Thanks to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), it is now possible for SMEs or other companies to collaborate with academic research organisations, have access to their equipment, and integrate some of their highly skilled researchers within the research projects of the firm.

Transferring cutting-edge science and technology from creative academic groups to SMEs is a key element of successful innovation.

The European Commission knows that well-trained, entrepreneurial-minded researchers, who can move between academic and other settings, are essential to this successful collaboration. This is why the MSCA are promoting Business-Academic collaborations that focus on giving researchers adequate skills and opportunities to contribute to SME and other business growth.

In order to give more practical information on how to get involved in these actions, and to present the latest business opportunities under Horizon 2020, the MSCA have launched a promotional campaign across Europe.

The next event in the UK is in Cardiff on Friday, from 12:00 – 18:00 (sorry, no rugby in Cardiff that weekend). If you wish to attend, please check the programme and register. If you cannot make this date, please refer to the events schedule for more events across Europe.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship Workshop – 16th and 17th March 2016

Are you applying to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships scheme in September 2016?

Although the call does not formally open until 14/4/16, now is the time to start working with your potential fellow to ensure that your application is ready in good time. This is a popular scheme for applications from BU and, as it has a deadline of 14/9/16, this puts pressure on your fellow academics undertaking quality reviews at an already busy time. You may also wish to avoid writing your application in August when you are preparing for the new academic year.

To this end, RKEO are providing two-day workshops with Dr Martin Pickard (our external bidding consultant) on 16th and 17th March 2016 for BU academics and we have now confirmed additional workshop dates on the 24th and 25th of May 2016 – however we will be gauging demand for this. These workshop will take you through all aspects of exploring the call requirements and writing your bid, plus the opportunity to discuss your developing application with academics on the same journey.

You are encouraged to attend with your potential fellow but they will need to make their own travel arrangements and cover any financial outlay.

Booking are now open for these two-day workshop. Please note that you will need to attend both days. Please send your request to attend to Dianne Goodman, RKEO Funding Development Team Co-ordinator by asap. Please let us know if you will be bringing your potential fellow.

COFUND – supporting doctoral and fellowship programmes

Would you like to apply for funding to support doctoral or fellowship programmes?

Then … consider COFUND.

According to the Participant Portal (the place to go for all things Horizon 2020), the COFUND scheme aims to stimulate regional, national or international programmes to foster excellence in researchers’ training, mobility and career development, spreading the best practices of Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions.

This will be achieved by co-funding new or existing regional, national, and international programmes to open up to, and provide for, international, intersectoral and interdisciplinary research training, as well as transnational and cross-sectoral mobility of researchers at all stages of their career.

This call is due to open on 14-04-16 with a closing date of 29-9-16.

There is also a conference in Luxembourg, 10-11 December 2015, organised by the Luxembourg National Research Fund.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships – Information sessions on 14th and 15th December

Although the call for the 2016 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships does not open until c. 12th April 2016, this is one of our most popular schemes. As such, REKO wants to make sure that all potential applicants have the opportunity to submit a strong application. We have, therefore, events already planned to help support your application.

The first activity is an introductory session to introduce those new to Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships to the requirements of the call. These will be repeated on both campuses:

Monday 14th December in the Thomas Hardy Suite, Poole House
Tuesday 15th December in B226, Bournemouth House

Both events will start at 13:00 and will last for approximately one hour, to include time for questions. As these are over lunch-time, please feel free to bring your lunch along.

If you are unable to attend or would like to read more about this call before attending, please refer to the call page and to the Work Programme (pages 11 -14 with the context for all Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions given in pages 4-5). For those planning well ahead, the 2017 call is planned to open on 11 April 2017 and close on 14 September 2017.

Booking is essential – please email Dianne Goodman, RKEO’s Funding Development Team Co-ordinator, to confirm your attendance. If you are unable to attend but would like to be added to our list of potential MSCA IF 2016 or 2017 applications, please email Dianne stating in which year you intend to apply. We can then keep in contact with you about this call.

RISE 2016 – Information Session on 9th December 2015

The call for the Research and Innovation Staff Exchange 2016 will open on 8th December 2015 with a closing date of 24th April 2016.

In order to help you with this application and to ensure that this is the right call for you, we are hosting an information session on Wednesday, 9th December. As part of this session, Heather Hartwell, who is currently leading a RISE project, will discuss her personal experiences of this Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action.

This event will take place in Poole House – P411, starting at 14:00. Depending on questions and audience interaction, it is expected that the duration will be approximately 1.5 hours.

Following the previous announcement, to support you and your potential fellow, RKEO are running a two-day Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship on 14th and 15th April. You are welcome to invite your potential fellow to this event, so that you can work together, developing your bid. The days will be a mixture of training and supported time to start writing your bid. Refreshments will be provided.

This event is free but does not include any travel or accommodation for your guest academic. You must book your place via Dianne Goodman, dgoodman@bournemouth.ac.uk, who is now in the post of Funding Development Co-ordinator. External guests must have a BU academic with them at the event and bookings cannot be accepted from non-BU staff. When booking please give numbers attending and any dietary requirements. Please book by Thursday 9th April as catering arrangements need to be finalised.

Please do not ask your guest to book any travel until your attendance is confirmed by RKEO. If the guest requires a a visa to attend, any letters required must be supplied by your Faculty.

If you don’t yet have a fellow or they cannot attend, you are still welcome to attend this event. BU academics who wish to be fellows are also invited.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship – workshops and further information

UKRO is hosting two workshops, as the National Contact Point for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship scheme. The events are aimed at researchers based in, or moving to, the UK who are planning to submit a proposal to the Individual Fellowships call:

The event at Leeds Beckett University on 5 May will start at 11:00 and finish at 15:30 (with registration from 10:30).
The event at University of Westminster on 6 May will start at 9:30 and finish at 13:00 (with registration from 9:00).
