NIHR Grant Applications Seminar & Support event is coming to Bournemouth 28th June 2017 – book now

RKEO are delighted to announce that the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Grant Applications Seminar & Support Event run by the NIHR Research Design Service South West (RDS-SW) is coming to BU.

The session is being held as part of the Research and Knowledge Exchange Development Framework, and will offer some insights into what NIHR are looking for in grant applications to their schemes. You’ll hear from NIHR RDS advisers on what makes a good grant proposal, and from Simon Goodwin, Research for Patient Benefit Programme Manager for the South West.  The afternoon session will consist of one-to-one appointments for those who would like to discuss their own proposal with Simon and/or an RDS adviser.  The session is open to academics from all Faculties, and clinicians in the local health service wishing to pursue research in the fields of health and social care.

The importance of writing a good grant application

Everyone knows how important it is to write a good grant application – if you’re not submitting the best grant application you can, you won’t be in the running to win the money. But how do you write the best application to stand you out from the crowd?

As part of the Research and Knowledge Exchange Development Framework, RKEO are hosting a Grants Workshop and follow-up Bid Writing Retreat.

This two day event will combine advice and guidance on writing grant applications, and will be delivered by external bid writing experts ThinkWrite.

Day one (Thursday, 1st June 2017) will comprise of a grants workshop which will give participants the opportunity to expand their ideas on available funding sources, and investigate what funders want to achieve when they hand over money. Participants will then develop a strategic approach to writing applications.

Day two (Thursday, 29th June 2017) will consist of a follow-up bid writing retreat, where one-to-one support will be available to develop applications for funding.

All academics and researchers are welcome to attend.  Participants can attend either day, but must have a funding application they plan to submit within 12 months. The application can be to any funder.

Explore career and funding options with the MRC’s Interactive Career Framework

The MRC have developed an Interactive Career Framework which provides information on possible options for careers and funding in health research within academia and industry.

The framework includes information on relevant funding opportunities for eight major health funders, including the MRC, Cancer Research UK, Wellcome Trust, and the National Institute for Health Research.

The Framework also offers potential career development routes depending on your current career stage.

Don’t forget the Research and Knowledge Exchange Development Framework is a programme of training and development opportunities available to all members of staff regardless of what level they have attained in their academic career.  It provides several pathways of opportunity depending on what interests you.

Insight 2017 – Health Foundation Funding Opportunity

  • Insight 2017 opens for applications on 10 May 2017.
  • £1.6 million is available for research that advances the development and use of data from national clinical audits and patient registries as a mechanism for improving health care quality in the UK.
  • The programme comprises two funding streams for small and large-scale awards.
  • Deadline for applications: Tuesday 25 July 2017.

 

The Health Foundation is exploring what a learning health care system might look like in the UK and wants to better understand the elements that could contribute to making one. They recognise that digitisation and analysis of data and information play an important role in supporting health care systems to continuously learn and improve.

The rich information held in national clinical audits and registries can be used to inform improvements in health care quality. However, national audits and registries are yet to realise their full potential in the UK.

The Health Foundation’s £1.6 million Insight 2017 funding invites researchers to submit ideas for research that advances the development and use of data from national clinical audits and patient registries as a mechanism for improving health care quality in the UK.

The programme comprises two funding streams:

  • Small-scale awards – up to £100,000 to support innovative research that is particularly novel or conducted at a small scale, completed over 18 months. Projects eligible for funding under this stream include standalone research studies, and feasibility or pilot studies.
  • Large-scale awards – between £300,000 and £400,000 for substantive studies across more than one site and/or location of innovative and ambitious research with the potential to support transformational change, completed over three years.

The call aims to fund research that either:

  • broadens the involvement of patients in the design and collection of clinical audit and registry data, specifically the collection and use of patient reported outcomes
  • demonstrates the value of linking clinical audit and registry data to other data, to improve the value of health care
  • explores variation in metrics of clinical quality and outlier identification to determine priorities for improvement.

BU Research on Event Evaluation featured at the Meeting and Events Australia National Conference

Dr Nicole Ferdinand, Senior Academic in the Department of Events and Leisure recently presented at a three-day conference (April 30th – May 2nd 2017) at the International Convention Centre in Sydney hosted by Meeting and Events Australia (MEA). She was one of twelve plenary speakers who were part of the association’s national conference which featured the theme “Reboot” as delegates were treated to a number of presentations and workshops which were geared towards pushing the boundaries and challenging delegates to open their minds to the possibilities to improve the delivery of events. The conference celebrated its 40th year this year and is considered Australia’s “ultimate conference” for the events industry.

Dr Ferdinand’s plenary session was entitled 360 Degree Post-event Evaluation and featured cutting-edge research developed with fellow BU researcher Dr Nigel Williams on using social media data in evaluating events.

She followed her plenary session with a hands-on workshop. Feedback from both sessions was extremely positive as event evaluation is considered crucial for event success.

Writing a Justification of Resources – Session Resources Available Now

As part of the Research and Knowledge Exchange Development Framework, RKEO held a session on Writing a Justification of Resources. The session provided a brief overview of the Justification of Resources and offered tips for writing this section of the application form. Examples of effective Justifications of Resources were also provided.

Public lecture on ‘Getting the message across about Zika’

Public Lecture by Professor Jane Noyes, Bangor University

Getting the message across about Zika: using qualitative evidence to inform the global WHO risk communication guidelines for public health emergencies, and lessons learned for intervention development.

Jane is the Professor of Health and Social Services Research and Child Health at Bangor University. She specialises in child health and social care research. She is also an expert in methodology, including complex intervention development and evaluation, and qualitative and mixed method systematic review methodology.  Jane is Lead Convenor of the Cochrane Qualitative and Implementation Methods Group and Editor of the Journal of Advanced Nursing.

Jane’s talk will be followed by a short lecture by of Queen’s University Belfast on ‘Social technology solutions to postnatal care in Brazil’.

Fiona is a Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery and the Centre for Evidence and Social Innovation, Queen’s University Belfast. Her research focuses on enhancing maternal and child health and wellbeing. Her expertise includes conducting economic evaluations alongside intervention-based studies.

Book your place on our AI & Robotics Sandpit: 24/5/17 – 14:30-17:00

A Sandpit focused on “AI & Robotics”  will take place immediately following the Royal Society visit to BU on 24/5/17 – 14:30-17:00. Don’t delay spaces are limited – book in today!

Speakers will include Vicky Isley and Paul Smith (boredomresearch). They will present a new vision for technological innovation, one that embraces emotion in a-life systems and recognises the fragility of their sustaining environment. boredomresearch will discuss their collaboration with the Artificial Life Lab (Karl Franzens University, Graz Austria), who are employing bio-inspired robots to provide solutions operating in human polluted environments.

So, is this just networking?

Definitely not! It is a facilitated session with the primary intention of developing innovative research ideas, which also enables the development of networks. It gives you the opportunity to explore research ideas which you may develop over time, together with the chance to find common ground with academics from across BU and beyond.

Which means…?

We’re seeking to come up with novel research that could part of a proposal to funding streams such as the Royal Society or the Industrial Challenge Fund that will focus on “AI” and/or “Robotics”.

So, who should attend?

We want anyone who thinks they might have something to contribute. We will also be inviting relevant external attendees to contribute to the day.

What do I need to prepare in advance? What will the programme entail?

Absolutely nothing in advance. During the session, you’ll be guided through a process which results in the development of research ideas. The process facilitates creativity, potentially leading to innovative and interdisciplinary research ideas. These ideas will be explored with other attendees, and further developed based on the feedback received.

What if I don’t have time to think about ideas in advance?

You don’t need to do this but it will help. Attendees will come from a range of backgrounds so we expect that there will be lively conversations resulting from these different perspectives.

What about afterwards? Do I need to go away and do loads of work?

Well… that depends! This interactive day will result in some novel research ideas. Some of these may be progressed immediately; others might need more time to develop. You may find common ground with other attendees which you choose to take forward in other ways, such as writing a paper or developing a new placement opportuntity.

What if my topic area is really specific, such as health and AI/Robotics?

Your contribution will be very welcome! One of the main benefits of this type of event is to bring together individuals with a range of backgrounds and specialisms who are able to see things just that bit differently to one another.

Invitation to join ADRC Research Meetings

We cordially invite staff and students with an interest in ageing and/or dementia research to join us at our monthly Ageing and Dementia Research Centre (ADRC) research meetings. The meetings provide an opportunity for those with related research interests to network and hear about the wealth of research in this area across BU.

We kick off our first ADRC Research Meeting on 9th May 2017 from 11-12.30 (S218, Studland House, Lansdowne Campus) with our theme leaders providing an overview of our three research themes:

  1. Ageing and Dementia Friendly Environments – Prof Jan Wiener
  2. Nutrition and Well-being – Prof Jane Murphy
  3. Activity and Social Inclusion – Dr Ben Hicks

Following the success of a recent FHSS research seminar, the presentations will be in the ignite style – which is a short five minute slots using images, narratives, and altmetrics (http://www.ignitetalks.io/).

Health & Wellbeing in the 21st Century – it’s your responsibility 23rd May 2017 – LAST CHANCE TO BOOK

On Tuesday, 23rd May 2016, BU’s Research and Knowledge Exchange Office (RKEO) will be hosting a Sandpit event on Health & Wellbeing.

Which means…?

We’re seeking to come up with novel research which addresses challenges in health & wellbeing. With increasing pressure on the NHS, we need to consider how we can take responsibility for our own health & wellbeing. Potential areas to address this challenge may include but are not limited to, digital health & technology (apps, devices), sport, healthy diet & exercise, legal considerations (i.e. your body your choice), media, psychology, social care etc. We will also be joined by representatives from Public Health England, NHS England, and Project Nurture.

So, who should attend?

We want anyone who thinks they might have something to contribute. We will also be inviting relevant external attendees to contribute to the day.
