‘Participatory Research: Doing Research Inclusively, Doing Research Well’: 11th & 12th July, 1.30-3.30pm, BGB216

Learn how to engage stakeholders and communities in your research in a more meaningful, collaborative way in this short course, led by the co-director of the National Centre for Research Methods, Professor Melanie Nind. We have a small number of places left for researchers at all stages in their careers – you can sign up here.

The course comprises two 2-hour workshop sessions for 12-30 people (optimum 20) plus recordings and additional materials. Both sessions will be in person at the Bournemouth Gateway Building, and we encourage academics from all faculties to sign up for both workshops.

Participants will gain clear insight into the multiple agendas driving participatory research. Together we will develop know-how in addition to know-what needed for participatory research. The group will work collaboratively to develop their own ideas stimulated by shared examples and real-life conundrums.

Day 1: The why of participatory research – Adding value

Researching with not on: The changing dynamics of research and rationale behind the democratisation of research
Making the most of lived experience to add value to research
Participatory research designs and methods – different ways of knowing
5 practical changes we can make and why

Day 2: The how of participatory research – How to enhance research participation and quality

Co-producing research proposals and project designs
Participatory ways of working – getting ideas from successful projects
This is my truth – tell me yours – co-producing findings and outputs
5 steps to doing research inclusively and doing research well.

Professor Nind is also the author of What is Inclusive Research?, Director of the Centre for Research in Inclusion at the University of Southampton and Deputy Director of the South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership. She has expertise in the areas of education, disability studies and methodology and extensive experience supporting the development of participatory/inclusive research both locally and internationally.

Engaging in professional development – a workshop for researchers

On 29^th June, Vitae are visiting BU and running a series of events in one day to promote the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers.

One of the events running 11-1pm will be focused on Engaging in professional development and is a workshop directed at researchers.

The workshop will introduce participants to tools to assist them in managing their own professional development planning, exploring concepts, and techniques to assist them in setting, pursuing and achieving their career goals. It will be based around the Researcher Development Framework (RDF) and how it can be incorporated into their planning to effectively support their career development.

The workshop will explore:

• What we mean by professional development planning

• Why it should matter to researchers

• The core skills and attributes of effective researchers

• How to identify one’s own skills and attributes

• How to approach building a career development plan

By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed an understanding of the key concepts of career development, considered their current skillset, and started to design a roadmap to bridge the gap between the two, using the RDF.

Supporting researchers’ professional development – a workshop for managers

On 29^th June, Vitae are visiting BU and running a series of events in one day to promote the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers.

One of the events running 11-1pm, will be focused on Supporting researchers’ professional development and is a workshop directed at managers but is also suitable for research mentors.

Participants will explore how best to apply the standards laid out in the Concordat as they relate to supporting their team members’ professional development. Using an interactive approach, this workshop will facilitate a discussion around supporting researcher careers, giving participants the opportunity to share advice, good practice and practical tips for helping their team members to take control of their careers by engaging in professional development planning.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be confident in:

• Understanding what we mean by professional development for researchers, and why it matters

• Recognising best practice in supporting others’ professional development

• Applying that knowledge in their own team

Integrity Week Diversity, Accessibility and Inclusivity (DAI) Keynote and Workshop

Friday 20th May 2022

Diversity, Accessibility and Inclusivity (DAI) are important considerations in computing to ensure that technologies are suitable for all users, who could have differing abilities as a result of physical or cognitive impairments. Web security and privacy technologies can present barriers for people with disabilities, e.g. users with physical disabilities being unable to receive one time codes by text message or multi-step procedures on websites that are challenging for users with learning disabilities. This can result in these users being unable to authenticate themselves with organisations or accessing services.

On Friday 20th May 2022, Dr Huseyin Dogan (Associate Professor in Computing) and Dr Paul Whittington (Lecturer in Assistive Technology) will deliver a keynote presentation and workshop focussed on DAI considerations in research. The keynote will present their experiences and challenges of conducting assistive technology research, including usability studies in special educational needs schools and at public events. The Authentibility Pass and HealthAbility apps will be introduced that provide accessible authentication.

This will be followed by an Interactive Management workshop on DAI of computing and assistive technology. During this 1.5 hour workshop, delegates will collaborate to identify challenges in these themes and participate in a roundtable discussion to create a roadmap for enhancing diversity, accessibility and inclusivity.

Research Leadership Training Programme 2022

Following on from the successful pre Covid Research Leadership programme, (consistently rated 4+ out of 5), we are running a similar hybrid programme in 2022. This programme supports the development of all academics including Early Career Researchers, Mid-Career Academics, Senior Research Leaders and Associate Professors.

Participants will :

Be helped to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to lead teams to successfully deliver funded research projects, in line with stakeholder and funder requirements.
Gain an understanding of effective team leadership and team working within a research context in order to be able to devise strategies to get the best out of teams in the challenging environment of research.
Be equipped with an understanding of their strengths and limitations in order to be confident in developing their leadership skills in line with their career stage and future aspirations and be more confident to expand their funded research activities.

Q&A sessions for Research Impact Fund and Public Engagement Fund

The second call for the funds is now live. Book now for Q&A sessions on applying for funding.

The deadline for applications to both funds is Monday 28th February at 17:00. There will be two further Q&A sessions to answer any queries you may have about applying, at 14:00 on 21st February and 10:00 on 24th February. You can book here.

Research Impact Fund

The Research Impact Fund is split into two strands:

	Aim	Amount	Who can apply?
Strand 1	To support the development of new research partnerships and networks, to lay the groundwork for future research projects, i.e., to engage with key stakeholders, and establish partnerships and networks to support the co-creation of research questions	Up to £2,000	Early career researchers (within 7 years of completing their doctorate, or equivalent experience, not associate professors / professors) and staff new to research (have not published an academic output, or received internal or external funding for research)
Strand 2	To provide support for emerging impact from your own existing underpinning research, i.e., to support the development of research impact across BU and begin to identify potential case studies for post-REF2021 exercises	Up to £4,000	Academic staff who have existing published research which has the potential for impact, or is starting to result in impact

What we’re looking for

Applicants must demonstrate a clear understanding of how their own research – whether proposed or existing – can lead to impact. The UKRI defines research impact as “an effect on, change or benefit to the economy, society, culture, public policy or services, health, the environment or quality of life, beyond academia”.

Public Engagement funding stream

This call is for researchers at all stages of their careers to support the development and delivery of public engagement with research activities.

What we’re looking for

You will need to demonstrate that your proposed activity will involve a two-way interaction between you and your chosen public. The National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) defines public engagement as “the myriad ways in which the activity and benefits of… research can be shared with the public”.

“Engagement is, by definition, a two-way process, involving interaction and listening, with the goal of generating mutual benefit.” NCCPE

How to apply

This is a brand new session for 2021-22 – providing an introduction to what is involved when developing mutually beneficial research partnerships with communities. It will also help you decide whether it is the favoured approach for you and your community partners.

The session will be delivered by the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement and is aimed at those working in universities who want to know more about community engagement and are interested in the potential of applying a community-engaged research approach.
