New research ethics paper Faculty of Health & Social Sciences

Next months sees the publication of our latest article on research ethics in developing countries [1]. Our paper argues that despite a significant increase in health research activity in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) in recent years, only limited work has been done to address ethical concerns. Most ethics committees in LMICs lack the authority and/or the capacity to monitor research in the field. This is important since not all research, particularly in LMICs region, complies with ethical principles, sometimes this is inadvertently or due to a lack of awareness of their importance in assuring proper research governance. With several examples from Nepal, this paper reflects on the steps required to obtain informed consents and highlights some of the major challenges and barriers to seeking informed consent from research participants. At the end of this paper, we also offer some recommendations around how can we can promote and implement optimal informed consent taking process.

The paper is co-written by six authors, and interestingly five are graduates of the University of Aberdeen. These Aberdeen University graduates are currently affiliated with five different universities. Four of who are based in the UK at: the University of Liverpool, the University of the West of England, the University of Oxford, and in Bournemouth University’s Centre for Midwifery, Maternal & Perinatal Health (CMMPH) and one in the USA: Georgetown University. The sixth co-author, Nirmal Aryal, is currently a PhD student at the University of Otago in Dunedin (New Zealand). Whilst Liverpool-based researcher Dr. Pramod Regmi is heading back for Bournemouth University to become a lecturer in International Health in the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences this autumn.

Summer Science Exhibition – Call for proposals open now

The Royal Society is looking for brilliant science and scientists to feature at the Summer Science Exhibition 2018.

The Exhibition features the UK’s most inspiring research and is a chance for scientists to showcase their work to over 14,000 people, including everyone from school children and families to MPs and Fellows of the Royal Society. Exhibitors are supported throughout the process and get dedicated support, advice and guidance from our Exhibition team.

It’s a great event to be part of, but as our motto (Nullius in verba) urges, don’t take our word for it. A 2017 exhibitor said:

“The whole week of the exhibition was fabulous. All our team thoroughly enjoyed the event and it has been a memorable experience for us. We have learned a lot from this.”

The call for proposals closes on 1 September 2017 and the Exhibition will run from 2 – 8 July 2018.

The University of the Third Age are a community of retired/ semi retired people who enjoy the reward of learning and take part in regular groups and sessions to expand their skills and life experiences.

They are very enthusiastic audience so be prepared for lots of questions and interesting discussion about your research.

We are looking for talks that fit into the history theme as we’re inviting Boldre Parish Historical Society to join us, but if your research is not directly related we’d still love for you to be involved!

This is a half day event, however we only ask for you to be there for duration of your talk (30-40 minute talk followed by Q&A session)

Call Pre-Announcement: ‘Public Spaces: Culture and Integration’ – HERA JRP. The Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA) Network is planning to implement a new Joint Research Programme under the theme “Public Spaces: Culture and Integration in Europe” (HERA JRP PS). This programme will be implemented and funded by 24 humanities funding organisations with the support of the European Union and is subject to the signature of the Grant Agreement with the European Commission for co-funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. The expected publication date of the Call for Proposals for this HERA Joint Research Programme is 24 August 2017, with the deadline for submitting Outline Proposals on 24 October 2017. Please note that these dates may still be subject to changes.
Call for Tender: The Set Up and Implementation of Erasmus+ Virtual Exchanges (EVE), closing date 22.9.17. The purpose of this call is to set up and implement the ‘Erasmus+ virtual exchanges’ initiative, called EVE, linking countries’ young people, youth workers, youth organisations, students and academics from European and southern Mediterranean using online learning activities and technology-enabled solutions in order to strengthen people-to-people contacts and intercultural dialogue. This call has an estimated total value of 950,000 EUR.

Final call for Bournemouth Air Show Science Tent participants: Sign up!

We are still looking for hands-on activities to come join us at the Air Festival as we run their first ever Science Tent with support from the British Science Association and Siemens UK.

We’re looking for interactive and engaging activities or exhibits that:

Have a strong emphasis on science and technology
Highlights some of the exciting research happening at BU
Can join us for at least two consecutive days
And are suitable for the diverse audiences that are going to visit the Air Festival

The FAR project webpages have now been published.

BU’s pioneering Fair Access Research project has brought together students, SUBU, professional, service and academic staff from across the university to develop and expand expertise and reflexive practice in the field of fair access to higher education.

Each member of the team has brought different knowledge and experiences to a series of innovative research projects exploring what it means to be a ‘non-traditional’ student in the 21^st century. FAR has inspired new ways of thinking about fair access and widening participation through this ‘whole institution approach’,

The team has explored all the different stages in the student lifecycle developing an understanding of the challenges some students face in accessing or succeeding at university, how university is experienced by diverse groups of students and how the university can support them in the optimum way when they are here.

Second H2020 ERASMUS PLUS success for ADRC and CGMTR team

The Ageing and Dementia Research Centre (ADRC) and the Centre for Games and Music Technology Research (CGMTR) have been successful in their second H2020 ERASMUS PLUS funding application.

The project, led by Dr Ben Hicks from Psychology and supported by Professors Wen Tang (CGMTR) and Jan Wiener (Psychology), aims to work in collaboration with European partners to develop an online training toolkit that promotes the use of Assistive Technology for people with dementia and their care partners. In addition to this, it will also explore the use of VR technology as a tool for educating the public on dementia awareness. The project will begin in September 2017 and run for two years. This work follows closely on from their first ERASMUS project (awarded in September 2016 and on-going until August 2018), which sought to develop an e-training package for the use of Serious Games amongst people with dementia and their care partners.

The quick-fire successes for the project team demonstrates the growing interest across Europe in the use of technology as a means to enhance Quality of Life and well-being in people with dementia. As technology evolves, and awareness increases amongst researchers and practitioners of the benefits it can have for this population, it is likely that this field will expand at a rapid rate. Hopefully the ADRC and the CGMTR, with their growing expertise in this area, will be well positioned to take full advantage of this in the future!

Nuffield Research Placements: “My experience at the Orthopaedic Research Institute”

Hi, my name is Holly Coombs.

I am currently doing a research placement at Bournemouth University as part of the Nuffield programme, which gives people at the end of their first year of A-levels a chance to work with professionals in science based professions.

Alongside PGR Francesco Ferraro, I have been predominantly working on his study on inspiratory muscle training and how by using a device called POWERbreathe is possible to improve inspiratory muscles strength.

I will be at Bournemouth University for four weeks where at the end I am going to write a report that will hopefully be published by the Young Scientist Journal.

My report is going to be on the Timed Up and Go test (TUG). It is going to include information about what the TUG test is, as well as how it can help us to predict falls and measure stability.

My whole aim of this placement is to gain research skills that will help me later in life as I intend to pursue a medical career.

On the 20th July, I got the chance to use two surgical simulators:

The Orthopaedic Research Institute (ORI) contains the Ossim SimK total knee replacement simulator, and the VirtaMed knee arthroscopy. This is the only lab in Europe where the two simulators are together.

Indeed, the ORI produces high-quality research which helps doctors and students to understand and learn more about many fields, including orthopaedic surgery, knee and hip replacements. With the aid of Shayan Bahadori (Orthopaedic Research project manager), I progressed from drilling holes into a piece of woods to trying a full knee replacement. Next, I got to try my hand at a knee arthroscopy which I found very challenging.

From trying these surgical simulators, I have learned that perseverance and resilience are essential. At first, I found that even just drilling holes into a piece of wood using the simulator was incredibly hard. However, as I used and practiced the simulators more, I could feel myself improving and progressing in the fundamental skills required.

This is a valuable experience to have gained as it is essential for all careers, not just medical ones.

In conclusion, continuing my placement, I hope to assist in the carrying out of respiratory muscles tests and I hope that by the end of my internship I will have a greater understanding of what it takes to conduct a research study and also how the data collected can be used and analysed.

Seldom Heard Voices: marginalisation and societal integration’ brings together a range of existing academics across Social Sciences and Social Work, both early career researchers keen to be mentored and established researchers. Nursing Research Cluster Membership

The Nursing Research Cluster came into being in May 2016 and following some scoping of members’ expertise and areas of interest in the context of contemporary nursing and health care, our focus from autumn 2017 will concern Nursing and long-term health challenges. The cluster brings together academics with passion, expertise and reputation in nurse education and research for impact on patient benefit and the preparation of a resilient workforce to support healthy communities. It is led by a core group of very experienced researchers with high level collaborations nationally and internationally. It will support and build the reputation of nursing research at Bournemouth University and enable many more staff to achieve a fused portfolio of activity for Ref 2021.

Managing people with long-term conditions is a significant challenge for the UK and global health community. As the largest professional group in health care, nursing has a major role to play. Colleagues at BU have been researching leadership, workforce development and value-based nurse education, as well as issues pertaining to long-term conditions such as cancer and chronic obstructive airway disease (COPD). The aim is to bring these three strands together to form a synergy to establish a clear framework for research activity that supports the development of a nursing workforce capable of meeting the challenges of changing patterns of health need in the coming decades.

Moving forward cluster members will develop and lead distinct research themes to provide a clear framework for nursing research at BU. The potential for collaborative activity with FHSS research groups is clearly evident and to be encouraged. However the unique focus of this group is the nursing contribution towards healthy communities, particularly for those living with long-term conditions.

The Integrative Wellbeing research group (iWell) has its ancestry in a previous Research Centre, viz., the Centre of Wellbeing & Quality of Life. The legacy of this centre is a wealth of expertise that can be brought to bear on several key domains of health-related wellbeing, including the development of public health innovations. Furthermore, recent appointments have strengthened the Faculty’s research expertise in areas that are known to influence wellbeing at a fundamental level, such as physical activity and nutrition.

Our inter-disciplinary, and cross-faculty team will undertake research to improve public health and wellbeing at population, community and individual citizen levels. A particular focus has been, and will continue to be, upon low income, disadvantaged and/or marginalised groups. Furthermore, members are committed to the INVOLVE principles for the co-production of research questions with service users.

Ageing & Dementia Research Centre (ADRC) – Centre Membership

The ADRC is the only cross faculty centre at BU that brings together expertise in the areas of ageing and dementia. The aim of ADRC is to use the team’s collective expertise to develop person-centred research which will improve the lives of older people with long-term conditions including dementia and their families. The research falls under three broad categories – developing ageing & dementia friendly environments, nutrition & wellbeing and activity & social inclusion. Centre for Midwifery, Maternal and Perinatal Health (CMMPH) – Centre Membership

CMMPH focuses on research in midwifery, maternal and perinatal care. Academic researchers associated with the group employ a wide spectrum of research approaches, ranging from qualitative to quantitative research and from mixed-methods studies to systematic reviews. They also cover a range of different topics, with studies undertaken locally in Dorset and the South of England, nationally across the UK, and internationally as far afield as Afghanistan, Nepal, Pakistan and the USA. We currently have 21 doctoral students working on a wide variety of projects both local and international.
