BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants

The call for the next round of BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants is now open and closes at 5.00 pm on 9th November 2022.

We welcome the new electronic Intention to Bid (e-ITB) forms from Early Career Researchers and/or for bids that deliver pump priming / seed  funding purposes.

Due to the volume of bids that are received by RDS in every round, the internal deadlines will be strictly applied to ensure that the pre-award team can provide

all interested academics with optimal support in a timely manner.

Where ITB forms are received after 10th October 2022 they will be moved automatically to the next round.

The British Academy has provided guidance and FAQs. They have stipulated that all applicants must read the documentation carefully before starting their application.

Timeline

The call closes at 5.00 pm on 9th November 2022.

Date Action

10/10 Intention to Bid forms to be submitted via the new electronic intention to bid platform.
At this date, advise your referee that you will be sending them your completed application on FlexiGrant and they will need to provide their supporting statement by .

12/10 If you are Grade 8 or below and you wish to use the support of an External Application Reviewer (EAR), you must submit a first draft of the application to RDS by this date.
An EAR will not be allocated to you if you send a draft to RDS after this date.

21/10 Latest date for you to fully complete your application on FlexiGrant, so it is ready for your referee to complete the supporting statement via FlexiGrant.
Note that the earlier you complete you application on FlexiGrant, the more time the referee will have to review your bid and provide the supporting statement by 31/10.

31/10 Latest date for referee to complete the supporting statement via FlexiGrant.
02/11 Click ‘submit’ and the form will be sent to BU’s account for RDS checks.
02-09/ 11 Institutional checking process – RDS will work with you to ensure compliance with all funder’s requirements.
09/11 Submission deadline – latest date to formally submit on FlexiGrant.

*Research Professional is pleased to invite UK researchers to our updated Broadcast Demonstration series.

This session will provide an introduction to the *Research Professional platform, demonstrate how to locate funding opportunities matching research interests, and show how to set up email alerts to stay informed of new developments.

CLOSING SOON NERC Pushing the Frontiers internal competition

Funding opportunities

NERC introduced demand management measures in 2012. These were revised in 2015 to reduce the number and size of applications from research organisations for NERC’s discovery science standard grant scheme. As the standard grant scheme has been superseded, demand management measures will be applied to the Pushing the Frontiers scheme only. Full details can be found in the BU policy document for NERC demand management measures available here.

BU has been capped at one application per Pushing the Frontiers round. An application counts towards an organisation, where the organisation is applying as the grant holding organisation (of the lead or component grant). This will be the organisation of the Principal Investigator of the lead or component grant.

BU process

BU has a process for determining which application will be submitted to each NERC Pushing the Frontiers round. This takes the form of an internal competition, which will include peer review. The next available round is estimated to be in January 2023. The deadline for internal Expressions of Interest (EoI) which will be used to determine which application will be submitted is 30 September 2022.  The EoI form, BU policy for NERC Demand Management Measures and process for selecting an application can be found here: I:\RDS\Public\NERC Demand Management.

Following the internal competition, the Principal Investigator will have access to support from RDS and will work closely with Research Facilitators and Funding Development Officers to develop the application. Applicants will be expected to make use of External Application Reviewers.

The Funding Development Briefing at 12 noon on 21 September 2022 will cover NERC Pushing the Frontiers as well as the internal EoI process. Please click the link to join.

Funding opportunities

Every BU academic has a Research Professional account which delivers weekly emails detailing funding opportunities in their broad subject area. To really make the most of your Research Professional account, you should tailor it further by establishing additional alerts based on your specific area of expertise. The Funding Development Team Officers can assist you with this, if required.

Research Professional have created several guides to help introduce users to Research Professional. These can be downloaded here.

Quick Start Guide: Explains to users their first steps with the website, from creating an account to searching for content and setting up email alerts, all in the space of a single page.

User Guide: More detailed information covering all the key aspects of using Research Professional.

Administrator Guide: A detailed description of the administrator functionality.

In addition to the above, there are a set of 2-3 minute videos online, designed to take a user through all the key features of Research Professional. To access the videos, please use the following link: http://www.youtube.com/researchprofessional

Research Professional are running a series of online training broadcasts aimed at introducing users to the basics of creating and configuring their accounts on Research Professional. They are holding two monthly sessions, covering everything you need to get started with Research Professional. The broadcast sessions will run for no more than 60 minutes, with the opportunity to ask questions via text chat. Each session will cover:

  • Self registration and logging in
  • Building searches
  • Setting personalised alerts
  • Saving and bookmarking items
  • Subscribing to news alerts
  • Configuring your personal profile

Each session will run between 10.00am and 11.00am (UK) on the second Tuesday of every other month. You can register here for your preferred date:

Horizon Europe Brokerage Event – Energy

Funding opportunities

Please note that a virtual brokerage event for Horizon Europe calls of Cluster 5 Climate, Energy and Mobility will be held on 29 September 2022. This is intended to provide an opportunity to discuss your project ideas with potential partners and to build collaborations and join consortia.

There are two calls scheduled to open in early September 2022:

HORIZON-CL5-2022-D3-03 – Sustainable, secure and competitive energy supply, with closing date on 10 January 2023 and HORIZON-CL5-2022-D4-02 – Efficient, sustainable and inclusive energy use, closing on 24 Jan 2023.

The following topics are included under each of these calls.

  • HORIZON-CL5-2022-D4-02 (deadline 24/01/2022)
    • Designs, materials and solutions to improve resilience, preparedness & responsiveness of the built environment for climate adaptation (HORIZON-CL5-2022-D4-02-01)
    • Solutions for the sustainable, resilient, inclusive and accessible regeneration of neighbourhoods enabling low carbon footprint lifestyles and businesses (HORIZON-CL5-2022-D4-02-02)
    • Sustainable and resource-efficient solutions for an open, accessible, inclusive, resilient and low-emission cultural heritage: prevention, monitoring, management, maintenance, and renovation (HORIZON-CL5-2022-D4-02-03)
    • Smart-grid ready and smart-network ready buildings, acting as active utility nodes (HORIZON-CL5-2022-D4-02-04)
    • More sustainable buildings with reduced embodied energy / carbon, high life-cycle performance and reduced life-cycle costs (HORIZON-CL5-2022-D4-02-05)
    • Support to the activities of technology areas of the SET Plan: Action dedicated to energy efficiency in industry (HORIZON-CL5-2022-D4-02-06)

NIHR Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) seminar – 1st September 12-2pm

About the seminar

The seminar will be hosted by the NIHR Research Design Service and will provide a great opportunity to hear from members of the RfPB programme team and funding panel, as well as from successful applicants. There will also be information about the RDS and the support available for people who are applying to the programme.

Researchers and health and social care professionals who want to learn more about the RfPB programme and the support available to them.

• What the funding panel look for in an application
• Experience of previous successful applicant(s)
• Including Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in your application
• Including Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in your application

Internal Deadline for MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships 2022

The 2022 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships (PF) Call deadline is approaching (14 September 2022).

As announced earlier, BU internal deadline for submission of e-ItB forms for this year’s call is this week – 15 July 2022.

The NIHR doctoral training camp is a 3 day annual face to face event providing guidance and practical experience on putting together a successful application for funding.
By attending the virtual sessions run during day 1 of the NIHR Doctoral Training Camp, you will have access to the introductory plenary talks.

The event will include presentations on:

● How to sell your project when applying for funding
● Effective patient and public involvement
● What funding panels are looking for in applications
