1st International Military Law Conference in South Africa – BU Research receives global attention

Associate Professor in International Law (BU) and War Studies (FHS) Sascha Dov Bachmann just returned from Johannesburg where he presented on Hybrid War and Lawfare at the 1^st International Military Law Conference in South Africa. A great experience and and from a media point of view as well as from a BU research point of view the conference and its coverage in the regional African and international media were a full success.

The reference below is taken from the official SA Government Media release and was taken up by various media sites inside the African Union and abroad: the UK, US, Ghana,Kenya, Sudan, NZ etc and reads as follows:

“The rest of the first day (under the sub-theme International Military Law) unpacked issues relating to the permissible and legal use of armed force by States, and the legal rules governing soldiers during such armed conflicts. Professor Sascha-Dominik Bachmann of Bournemouth University in the United Kingdom presented a paper setting out the implications of so-called “hybrid war” and the offensive and defensive use of “lawfare” (the use of litigation for political purposes aimed at impacting a State’s military operations). ”

The conference theme of “contemporary military law” was explored with sub-themes relating to international military law, human rights law, operational law and administration of military justice.

The objectives of the conference – to raise public awareness of the importance of military law in a democracy and to stimulate interest in academic research in this specialised field of public law to strengthen the development of South African military law – were successfully met with a number of international and local academics and military professionals presenting research papers, according to the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

The conference was officially opened by SA National Defence Force Chief, General Solly Shoke. In his opening address he welcomed the opportunity provided by the conference for South African military lawyers to benchmark local approaches with that of other armed forces. He also expressed the wish for the conference to provide a basis for evaluating whether any amendments to military and other legislation may be necessary to empower commanders to instil and maintain military discipline.

Welcoming Dr Caitlin Potter to the BU Eco-Coding team

We would like to welcome Dr Caitlin Potter who joined our Eco-Coding team from Bangor University on the 31st October. Her previous work has been on microbial communities of peatlands using metagenomic techniques and she will bring expertise and experience to the Eco-coding project.

Now that Caitlin is with us we look forward to the next stage of the project; discovering what our urban pollinators have been feeding on.

BU research presented at the 10th International Conference on Toxic Cyanobacteria (ICTC), Wuhan, China

BU academic Dan Franklin and PhD student David Hartnell presented research in Wuhan, China during the 10^th ICTC last week. Attracting about 350 delegates, and sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the conference was concerned with the growing problem of toxic cyanobacteria in freshwater resources and the ways in which ecological and health consequences can be reduced. Toxic cyanobacteria are a particular problem in China, where they have contaminated public drinking water supplies creating a serious public health issue. Dan and Dave gave 4 presentations at the conference on work carried out with BU colleagues Ian Chapman, Su Chern Foo, Eddie McCarthy and Prof. Genoveva Esteban. Dr. Andy Turner from the government biotoxin labs at CEFAS, Weymouth, an important collaborator on the BU work, also presented at the conference. The conference was a great success and enabled meetings with important researchers in the field from around the world. Dan and Dave would like to thank BU for funding some of the expenses of the trip.

Interested in helping bees and other pollinators thrive in our towns and cities?

The newly launched Pollinator Exchange is your one-stop resource

With pollinator numbers in decline in rural areas, there has been increasing focus on the many ways in which towns and cities can be made more pollinator-friendly. Urban green spaces such as amenity grassland in parks, gardens, verges or roundabouts offer plenty of opportunities for pollinators, provided they are managed correctly.

While much academic research has gone into this field in recent years, this is not always readily available to the people in charge of managing urban green spaces. Local councils, highway agencies and other authorities need clear, evidence-based practical advice to turn our towns and cities into places abuzz with pollinators.

The Pollinator Exchange website, www.pollinatorexchange.org developed by Bournemouth University, fulfils this role. It provides an interactive database of the latest research, practical guidance and projects connected to pollinators in urban areas. All resources come with a brief summary of their main points, allowing those with limited time to follow recent developments and implement key recommendations. Website users can browse the existing catalogue and also add their own resources, thereby contributing to ongoing knowledge exchange on this important topic.

Gill Perkins, Chief Executive at the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, was one of many staff from conservation and land management organisations who generously gave their time to help test and develop the website. She said: ‘Bumblebee Conservation Trust recognises that urban environments are becoming crucially important to reverse the decline in pollinators. The Pollinator Exchange site will facilitate communication and knowledge exchange between groundsmen and contractors, biodiversity officers and everyone who influences decisions on what to grow, making it a vital resource for all to learn best techniques.’

The Pollinator Exchange was funded through the Higher Education Funding Council for England’s knowledge exchange programme: the Higher Education Innovation Funding scheme. (HEIF 5+1 August 2015 – July 2016.)

Festival of Learning 2017 – What could you do?

With the call for proposals being open for Festival of Learning 2017, today we have for you another post to give you some inspiration for the type of the event that could be your own! Planning your event can be difficult and time consuming, especially if you have never done anything quite like that before and because of that we are here to help!

Make sure to come to one of our drop-in ‘Support for developing your idea sessions’ and talk to us.

Next session is on Friday 11 November, 12:30pm-1:30pm at EB204, Executive Business Centre. Additionally we also offer bookable training session for you to learn all about ‘Developing a public engagement event’.

What you research often determines how you will engage with the public and who your work will impact, but there are ways to broaden your impact. This can be done by bringing different academics into one room. Anything can happen when two separate disciplines are being combined together and quite often this can be a simple recipe for an effective public engagement event too!

Making Science Graphic

British Science Festival in Swansea featured many creative and fun events and one of them was an interactive drawing workshop Making Science Graphic. The event used graphic novels, which can capture the imagination with imaginative narrative and vivid drawings, as a useful vehicle for talking about science. Neuroscience is not the easiest discipline to be sharing with the public without having to use too many scientific terms but two neuroscientists Uta Frith and Chris Frith managed to do just that in a fun way. They first explained what the mirror neurons are and took their audience on fascinating journey through human brain to then let graphic novel enthusiast Adam Rutherford and artist Daniel Locke translate it into graphic novel. Spoiled for choice by a wide variety of drawing mediums, the audience was encouraged to put their skills into practice and design their own little graphic novel about mirror neurons. Both artists observed the process, talked to the attendees and offered some guidance. Probably the only reason why I still remember what mirror neurons are is because I got to draw them and this was actually a very first novel graphic I ever designed.

This event took place as part of the British Science Festival in Swansea, 2016.

The aim of the ‘Working with Business’ pathway is to develop your skills to connect with the business community including networking, identifying project funding – including Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) and building project teams involving businesses.

You will have the opportunity to hear from both internal and external speakers as to how they have developed networks to facilitate collaborations and engage with the university.

The next session: “Business engagement and networking” will be running on Wednesday 2 November from 2.00pm – 4.00pm and bookings are being taken now.

If you want to put your networking skills to the test there are a number of events running during November that involve the chance to meet with external organisations during the Festival of Social Science and Festival of Enterprise.

NERC has agreed to support up to five new Enterprise Fellowships to boost the development of new businesses from investments in environmental research.

The Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) Enterprise Fellowship scheme provides support to researchers and innovators who have promising business ideas.

The programme, delivered by the RSE with support from BBSRC, NERC, STFC and Scottish Enterprise, allows fellows to focus solely on developing their business idea. They receive one year’s salary, expert business training, business development funding and access to mentors from a pool of successful individuals in the commercial community.

The next call for applications is now open, closing on 9 November 2016.

The social sciences at BU

Earlier this year a Fusion-funded series of public events at BU was organised by Professors Ann Brooks (FHSS), Candida Yates (FMC) and Barry Richards (FMC). For these ‘Dialogues in the Social Sciences’, leading social scientists were invited to speak at BU, along with other figures from outside and inside academia, on topics of current concern. The aim was to offer to BU students and staff, and to members of the local public, opportunities to hear and take part in authoritative and informed discussion of social and political issues.

The first was entitled ‘Increasing inequality? Widening opportunity? Debating higher education reform’ Two leading educationists from the University of London Institute of Education discussed the Higher Education Green Paper. Professor Sir Peter Scott (former editor of THE, and former V-C of Kingston University) and Professor Ann Phoenix, eminent psychosocial researcher, outlined their analysis of the prospects for the sector. BU’s Dr. Mastoureh Fathi (FHSS) and Ellie Mayo-Ward (SUBU V-P) were respondents. Chaired by Professor Iain MacRury of FMC, this event explored some of the risks to the sector in the current proposals.

In the second event (‘Our scandalised society’), criminologist Professor Chris Greer (City University) and Lord Blair (Sir Ian Blair, former Commissioner of the Met) discussed key issues regarding how the British state is responding to scandal proliferation, the implications of scandal for crime control and institutional regulation in the digital age, and the risk of scapegoating as a substitute for understanding and solving, particularly in a 24/7 news environment. Professor Ann Brooks was in the chair for an intriguing examination of the roles of both media and police in this complex intersection of social changes.

Professor Matthew Feldman of Teesside University is an expert on the Far Right; he was joined for the third and final event by Emman el-Badawy of the University of Exeter and the Centre on Religion and Geopolitics, and Dr Usama Hasan of the counter-radicalisation organisation the Quilliam Foundation, both experts on violent jihadism. Under the title of ‘Radicalisation: what is it and what threat does it pose?’, Professor Barry Richards chaired a wide-ranging discussion which both put the current threat of Islamist terror in broader historical contexts and looked closely at some of the debates around the Prevent counter-terrorism programme.

Each one of these events demonstrated that with excellent speakers and a thoughtful audience, a good discussion is guaranteed. All of them involved both students and members of the public, though the challenge of drawing in large numbers for early evening extra-curricular events was also in evidence. As well as their value to participants, these events flagged up internally and externally that BU has a growing base of social-scientific expertise, networked with internationally leading experts and pursuing a clear public engagement mission.

If you’re involved in a research project related to policing or crime reduction, you can share your work on the College of Policing website. (You will need to make sure that you have permission from your project/ research collaborators/ partners are aware of your intention and you have their agreement. )

The College of Policing website has a research tool that enables you to share research using the Policing and Crime Reduction Research Map. Criteria for use includes:

relevant to policing and crime reduction
of Masters degree level or above (and can include work/professional based project work)
ongoing and not completed can be included ( aswell as completed projects).

This tool has been trialled as part of the Higher Education Innovation Funded projects (HEIF 5+1 that were funded from August 2015 – July 2017) that were relevant to this sector. Check out these projects here:

Professor Wen Tang: Police training using gamification technology

This is a great tool to promote your research and develop opportunities for further collaboration and networking there-by extending the reach and potential impact. Both Sarah and Wen have very quickly received enquiries from members of the police force (from other parts of the UK), external collaborators and other institutions.

Incubation: Creating Value for Universities

KnowledgeLondon in partnership with HEEG is excited to bring you Incubation: Creating Value for Universities. The event provides an opportunity for debate and discussion on incubation centres. Incubation is a key strand of Enterprise activity, though universities can at times be uncertain about how it creates value.

Attendees at the event will hear from incubation managers and their colleagues about how this has worked in their universities, as well as from some of the founders who have benefitted from the service. There wil also be the chance to take a look at some of the nuts and bolts of running an incubation system, and consider how different types of incubator might be linked to the stage of development and type of university host.

Karen Brookes
Karen is the Programme Director for the SETsquared Partnership having devised and run their incubation and entrepreneurship training activities for the last fourteen years. She led the team that developed the world’s number one University Incubation Programme which has provided support to over 1,000 early stage technology companies which have raised over £1bn in investment.

Karen has built the SETsquared enterprise brand for the Universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey, which has provided over £3.8bn of economic impact to the UK economy. Karen has been key in the development of overseas relations in the US with technology support organisations such as MIT, Massachusetts Technology Transfer Centre, CONNECT, Global CONNECT, T2 Venture Capital and Austin Technology Incubator. Relationships with these organisations provide a springboard platform for European startups to access the US markets.

Adrian Tindall

Adrian is the Tenant Manager for Research, Enterprise and Innovation at London South Bank University (LSBU), where he managers the workspace community based in the Clarence Centre for Enterprise & Innovation and the Technopark.

Adrian acts as an enabler and facilitator for the SMEs housed in the workspace to engage with LSBU academics, staff and students through projects, events, mentoring and placements. Having developed a strategy to maximise the engagement opportunities for both LSBU and tenants, Adrian and his team are now looking for future tenants who complement and underpin the University’s Corporate Strategy.

BU Academic Presents AHRC Funded 3D Printing Research Through a Treasure Hunt Theme

Dr. Dinusha Mendis, Associate Professor in Law and Co-Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and Management (CIPPM) presented a poster at the 107th Society of Legal Scholars Conference 2016 capturing the research carried out for the Going for Gold Project.

The AHRC-funded ‘Going for Gold’ project explores the intellectual property implications of 3D scanning, 3D printing and mass customisation of ancient and modern jewellery, with a particular focus on the cultural and business sectors. In so doing, the project considers the copyright, design, licensing and contractual issues faced by key stakeholders in these industries.

The poster (illustration below) showcases the research carried out in the cultural sector (ancient jewellery), in collaboration with museums and points out the challenges faced by the museums as well as the opportunities which lie ahead in embracing this technology.

The research is led by Dr. Mendis in collaboration with Museotechniki Ltd and Uformia Ltd and the research team will produce Practice Guidelines on the adoption of 3D scanning, 3D printing and mass customisation within the cultural and business sectors.

This project builds on the research carried out for the UK Intellectual Property Office Commissioned Project on the IP implications of 3D Printing which was completed in 2015, leading to the publication of three reports.

NERC: New public engagement funding call

Engaging the UK public with the big issues of environmental science

NERC is inviting proposals under the Planet Earth Pilot programme for public engagement projects costing up to £20k that must be delivered between January and end of March 2017.

This call initiates delivery of NERC’s public engagement strategy through:

engaging members of the UK public with relevant contemporary issues of environmental science through delivery of environmental science public engagement activity
building public engagement capacity in the environmental science research community and providing opportunities for early career researchers and PhD students to develop skills, practice and embed public engagement in their research careers
building partnerships between researchers and publics or public-facing groups, and between research organisations.

Projects will focus on broad, contemporary issues of environmental science, not specific research projects or grants.

An additional budget is available to provide matched funding up to the total value of the proposal (an additional maximum £20k) to provide training and support for the involvement of early-career researchers and PhD students in public engagement projects.

The closing date for proposals is 16:00 on 3 November 2016.
